Chapter 27

Jane's POV

The policemen was busy taking statements from both Westly and Angelica. The room in the air was so full of tension, it could have been cut with a knife. There were two of them and to make sure the stories were not corrupted by another, they conducted themselves in different rooms. Restless I went back to Clara's room where Plumtree was now fast asleep, his head resting on the bed and his lower half of his body upon the floor. Walking up to Clara I couldn't help but feel guilty, this woman wasn't from her and it seemed since the moment she arrived she hadn't gotten a moments peace. Placing my hand lightly against her head I was relieved to find there was no fever. She just needed rest and it seemed she was getting an abundance of that. A dull knock on the door made me look up.

There stood George with a sullen look upon his face. He looked terrible, his hair was distorted and vest opened. He looked as though he had a worse night that any he had ever faced before, even on the battlefield. Clearing his throat I could see the tears that were threatening to spill from his eyes.

"Is she alive?" He whispered, so soft I could barely hear him.

"She is, she just needs rest, that's what the doctors says. There are two policemen downstairs who wish to have a word with you, Mr. Plumtree and Clara whenever she awakens. Do you remember anything about last night?" I ask as I cautiously make my way over to him.

Shaking his head he seems more distraught then before. The drinking must have put him in a haze to a point he either didn't want to remember or simply could not. A groan made up both look over to Clara. One of her arms moved up to her head, we quickly went over, waking Plumtree up in the process as we all waited to see if her eyes would open. Finally after a few moments and a few deep breaths her eyes opened and she chuckled looking up at the three of us.

"Did I die?" She asked as she looked between the three of us.

"No, the force of the explosion knocked you out. The doctor said you needed rest but no serious injuries." I comfort her as she slowly sits up.

"That was something, I remember the fire and running out of that place but what could have caused an explosion?" Clara asks pointing out a good point.

Everyone looked to George who looks confused as he tried to remember what in his home could have caused such a thing. He shrugs unsure what to say as another knock on the door makes them looked over to see Westly and one of the officers.

"We are ready for the next two witnesses, if you please." The officer asked kindly.

George nodded and went to the officers. I looked to Plumtree and nodded, I didn't think Clara was ready to go too far anytime soon. He kissed her hand before joining George and the officer and they disappeared into the hallway. Westly ran right over to Clara and she chuckled.

"You still run to me so quickly?" Clara laughed.

"I was very worried about my friend however, I did hear Angelica's comment before she went to the kitchens. She was commenting about how concerned she was in her position, that if something ever happened to Lord Land that she feared George would annul their marriage so he could come and be with you Clara." Westly says and both Clara and I look at one another shocked.

"We don't even know if he was there, you and James searched and found nothing." Clara said as she looked back to Westly. "I hate to ask this of you Westly but if you can follow her, find out anything you can. I just know deep down this all goes back to her."

Nodding Westly stood and smiled.

"I will do all I can, please keep safe until I can find out more."

And with that, Westly turned and took his leave from the room. Clara carefully stood up and went to the window, she looked outside and we could see the sun was beginning to set in the distance. She was quiet for a few moments before turning back to me.

"What if she wanted all of us to die in that fire? I know for a fact that fire had no just started, it had been burning longer then she claims." Clara said as I went to the window and nodded in agreement with her.

"Kill all of you? If that were so then she wouldn't have to worry about George running off to you! This was she would still get the title, land and the money...oh dear Clara, I fear we have quite the creative enemy." I tell her as I begin to pace the room. "One that is still in this house..."

Clara quickly dressed and went to the mirror.

"You have a plan don't you?" I asked her judging by her sudden ambitious attitude.

"Something like that, if I can make her admit to it then I will have witnesses. If not...we will have to think of a different clever way to catch her in the act." She replies as she lets her hair down.

Looking back at me, I see a curious grin on her face.

Downstairs, the police had just finished taking their statements with the men and Angelica and decided to come back in the morning for Clara's side of the story. They wanted to give her as much time as they could for her to remember all the details. Sending them off, I then go to the drawing room where Clara is sitting reading a book, George was at the fireplace also with a book in his hand. James on the other hand was at a table writing replies. No doubt to his family trying to explain the situation. Sitting down, I turn to take my tea when Angelica walks into the room.

Clara's POV

That woman may have the looks for the time, but the intelligence was more than I gave her credit for. Getting rid of everyone in one foul swoop was something I did not see. That I had to give her credit for. Barely glancing up from my book, all the men were playing their parts well. None of them payed any attention to her at all, not even her husband. Looking around the room, she grew frustrated. That's when I made my move.

"When will Lord Land return?" I asked addressing George.

Gently lowering the book, George looked over at me.

"Within a fortnight, he went to town for business, leaving last night. How lucky he was not to be caught in the fire since he changed his plans that very morning." George replied and I saw Angelica's eyes widen.

Ha! Something she didn't know! She didn't know that Lord Land left early in the morning for his trip and not waiting until late afternoon when he usually left according to George. Adjusting the necklace around her neck, it was easy to tell how uncomfortable she was with the topic at hand.

"It will be quite the story to tell him when he returns." Janes comments before she takes a small sip of her tea.

"Yes, the police will investigate tomorrow, any evidence will be taken of course and they will try to see what caused the fire and why it spread so quickly." George replied as he stepped away from the fireplace and stood before James. "Any ideas on how the flames would have spread so quickly?"

Now it was James turn to play along, sitting his task to the side. He looked up at George and now gave him his full attention.

"I have a theory but truly it seems implausible. It would involve arson. There are certain fluids that can be used to make a flame grow much quicker than it's normal rate. An accelerant could be almost anything with a chemical compound, even perfume." James said and Angelica then began to play with her gloves.

She was nervous alright, she was showing signs of guilt and I was picking up on all of them. She didn't want to be married and settle down, she wanted the title and money more than anything. She had already had many men, she wouldn't want to give that up.

"Now who would want to hurt my family, let alone send my mansion up in flames?" George wondered as he began to pace the room.

Then Angelica fainted right there before all of us. Putting my book down, I go to her side and check. Her pulse is there and once she woke up she would have a story no doubt which meant we would still have to get her to confess or catch her in the act of destroying any evidence that might have been left at the scene.

"I'd say that is a clear sign of guilt." Janes comments.

"One of many." I reply.

Later that night, James and I wait patiently in the barn where Angelica will have to pass to get to the land's land. We knew that she wouldn't want to hide any evidence that might have been left at the scene. However we didn't know where the evidence would have been so we would have to wait for her to lead us to it.

"This is not the summer I thought I would have." James commented with a chuckle.

"You are not the only one, I came to a different time. Not that I would complain about that, after all it led me to you." I smile as I pulled my cloak closer to my body.

"After this we wed? That way we can be far from any trouble." James asks and I smile.

"Yes, this will be quite an interesting story to tell Father Brown will it not?" I giggle.

Then I see something, a lantern. Both James and I see that it is none other then Angelica. She fell for it. Following behind her we watch as she begins to talk to herself as though there were another person there. That was odd but it could be guilt causing her to do that. Once at the burnt down home of the Land's, Angelica goes to what would have been the dining room and searches through where the drapes may have been. An idea then came to my mind, what if what James said was true? The perfume could have been doused on the drapes and none would have thought of it. Angelica could have said she put on too much and none would have said a word...but then where is the bottle?

"I did this for the money and now here I am digging through the ash for a damn bottle. If only that damn American hadn't have been in the way! I thought the house would kill both her and her lover boy, it had been burning so long I thought both the lands would be dead by the time it crumpled on her and plum boy." Angelica says to herself though unaware bother Plumtree and I can clearly hear her.

"Plum boy?" James asked as he acts offended.

Angelica freezes and looks up at us.

"You are more devious then I gave you credit for, now you have to pay." I tell her as she tries to take off, but I jump on her back and put her in a sleeper hold.

Within a few seconds she is back on the ground passed out. James notices something in her hand and quickly takes it from her. There in his hand is a large perfume bottle that somehow hadn't shattered in the fire and that was all the proof we needed. Dusting myself off I look to James.

"You were right, I should have known you would be right." I tell him as I walk up to him and pull him down by his collar and kiss him right there.

"I usually am, you seem surprised." James jokes as he returned my kiss.
