Chapter 26
George was too drunk to understand. He had taken more to the bottle than anything. He tried to stand up but on succeeded in stumbling and almost falling out a window. Grabbing him and holding him up he slurred his words while accusing me of using him. Rolling my eyes, Westly and Plumtree came into the room. Then there was a loud boom that came from above us. Plumtree and Westly held onto James as we made a run for it. They were ahead of me as we ran trying to get out of the house the back way, the only way that wasn't on fire yet. Both men got out the door when I heard a loud crash behind me and a huge force pushed me from the house.
"Clara! Clara can you hear me?" I was barely able to make out.
Someone was holding onto me. Moving my head up I squint and can see Plumtree looking down at me with tears falling from his eyes. What happened? Did we find George? Did everyone get out safe? James held me up and embraced me.
"Oh Clara, thank god. I was so scared you wouldn't wake up." He said as I could still hear a loud ringing in my ear as well.
"James, I feel so tired." I mumbled.
"Come, let's get you back, we need to make sure you are not injured." James spoke as he gently picked me up into his arms.
Jane's POV
Westly came back first with George in his arms. The man was passed out and we led Westly to a spare room where he placed George down upon the bed. Where were Plumtree and Clara though? Just as I turned to ask westly that very question George came into the house with Clara in his arms.
"Dear god! What happened to her?" I question as I run up to him.
"Call for a doctor!"
James barely had time to say that as he rushed her to her room. Carefully he laid her down upon the bed. He knelt beside her and began to caress her cheek. He was overcome with grief. She wasn't dead from what I could tell but I immediately sent Westly for a doctor. Plumtree didn't say a word as we waited, he sat on the ground beside Clara's bed, he held her hand and continued to caress her face.
Within a few hours the doctor had came and got as much information as he could from Plumtree and Westly. He examined Clara and we washed her up, putting new clothes on her and put her back into bed. The goodness was she was not injured, she had just a couple of scratches and maybe a bruise but the doctor said she should be better within a few days. James was grateful to the doctor and walked him out after he examined George as well. George was just drunk, nothing to be done about that.
"The house is gone miss Austen, all of it. By the time we got there, it was already half burnt." Westly tells me and I start to become more suspicious about George's new wife.
James returned to Clara's side as I went to Angelica, she was weeping before George and begging him to wake up. Was this all an act? Did she have something to do with the fire? It was a horrid thought to think but still a logical one, she did leave and not alert anyone.
"Angelica? You had better get some rest." I call out her.
The moment she hears my voice, the tears stop, she turned to me and nods. She walks out of the room without another word. She had no idea where to go but she just got up and left the room. Following her I saw her go to the kitchen. She was talking to the cook who was just staring his daily chores.
"Miss Austen, can I help you?" the cook asked me.
"No, I was coming to show Angelica where she would be sleeping." I answer as she turns to me and puts down the crust of bread she had in her hand. "Come now."
Nodding she lowers her head and begins to follow me. I take her to another room far away from Clara's room. She walked into the room and went to sit on the bed. She still didn't say a word. She just laid down upon it and closed her eyes. Shutting the door, I was almost tempted to lock her inside of it but I did not. Going back to Clara's room, James still sat in his same position. He made sure the door stayed open to assure me nothing would happen that was un gentleman like.
"I do not believe Angelica is telling the whole truth." I confess to him.
"Neither do I." he says not looking away from Clara.
"What woman would just leave her new husband and father in law to die?" I question as I try to work this out in my head.
"I cannot say, someone who is not right in their mind?"
"No, something tells me she knew exactly what she was doing. What of Lord Land? Was he there?"
James shook his head, he and Westly searched the entire house and there was no sign of Lord Land. No one knew where he was or if he had gone out of town. George was useless until he sobered up and Angelica no doubt would have nothing to say that would be of us. The only motive they could think of together was money. If both George and Lord Land had died in that fire then Angelica would have inherited everything...wouldn't she? If so then why come to get help? Did she think that because of the past, Clara would not go to help out George and Lord Land? Maybe she was counting on Clara being distraught still and refusing to go and help, something Clara would not do.
"Miss Austen, I believe we should call for a policeman to make a statement. Westly sent for someone to take care of the fire." James sighed as he looked back at me. "If that woman is behind this, I cannot guarantee you I will act in a gentleman's manner. She risked the life of not only myself and Westly but the life of the woman I love and intend to marry, I cannot forgive that. I will ensure she ends up behind bars."
I believed everything that Plumtree spoke, he was angry and rightfully so. If this was Angelica's doing, then she was responsible for far more then the burning down of a house. Once Clara awoke I would hate to be in Angelica's shoes, especially if she came to the same conclusion that James and I had. For now though we would have to wait. Wait for the policeman, wait for Clara to awaken and wait for George to wake up and sober up to see if he knew where his father was. Would we get all the answers we wanted? I did not know but I could only pray that the lord would be on our side and the truth would be revealed.
