Chapter 18

Clara's POV

I couldn't say a word. Jane and Fanny instead led me away from the alter with cheerful grins on their faces. Not knowing what to say I just followed them but there was no smile on my face. Yes I did say I would marry George but...why in the world did it have to be now. My heart didn't know what to do and my head was too confused about what had just happened with Fanny's almost husband.

"Don't worry you can wear my dress." Fanny tells me as she goes behind a dressing screen and begins to take off her wedding dress.

"Clara?" Jane says turning me to face her now. "This is what you want is it not?"

My mouth opens to speak but nothing comes out. Not even able to speak I just want to cry but in all of my confusion I call not tell if they are tears of sadness of joy. Did I really want this? Did I want to stay here in this time? Marry George? Oh my goodness I think I am going to faint. That's when Fanny grabs me and begins to change me into the dress.

"Don't worry, I'm sure it will be just fine." Franny tells me with an odd smile, why do I feel like this was a set up?

After many minutes the dress is one me and I feel as though I really cannot breathe now. I sit down to try and compose myself when there is a knock at the door. Still I didn't know what to do so I just sat there as Jane answered the door.

"Forgive me for intruding." Plumtrees voice surprised me and I sat up straight.

"Plumtree, please I cannot speak with you now." Fanny spoke sadly.

"Actually I came to have a word with miss Clara. May I have a moment of her time alone?" Plumtree asks.

Before Fanny has a chance to say another one Jane grabs her and pulls her out of the room. Plumtree walks a few steps closer and looks me up and down. Admiring the dress is something he seems to do but it doesn't even bother me anymore.

"I know perhaps I am not the one you wish to speak to on your wedding day but before it can happen there is something I must confess to you." Plumtree starts as he walks to my side.

Jane's POV

He's going to confess to her, I just know it. Plumtree has loved Clara from the start and now he is going to finally tell her. Still I wasn't sure if he would be best for her. Fanny was trying to go back into the room so I had to keep myself in front of the door to prevent her.

"Ladies?" an older voice says to us. "I assume the bride to be is inside?"

Lord Land, George's father walked forward. Who all had Fanny invited to this wedding?! He was well dressed as usual but I could tell he was not happy either.

"This wedding cannot take place, I thought that George was only entertaining the young lady but in fact he has been betrothed since birth. His real wife is waiting outside in a carriage. I have her ready to come in and take her place at any moment." Lord Land informs us.

"I beg your pardon!" Fanny yells a bit too loud, she must have spent too much time around Clara. "What does this woman have that Clara does not?"

"Class and breeding my dear girl. George must have good strong heirs. I highly doubt a body as frail as hers could do such a task." he says with a scoff.

"You sir are a hypocrite. If I remember correctly you were the one informing her of her good birthing hips at you put it and now on their wedding day no less you decide to break the heart of a beloved friend! How dare you sir, kindly leave my sight before I do something very un lady like." I tell him as I turn away from him.

Turning with a gentle movement Lord Land then calls for someone behind him. After a few moments a woman walks inside. Fanny and I are completely shocked because we recognize the woman as the woman who was in the stables with Westley where Clara caught him. Instead of acting meek and weak she stood tall and proud...until she saw us. Fear came into her eyes when she looked upon us and for very good reason.

"Oh my." I state as Fanny raises her hand to her mouth.

"Been in the stables lately?" Fanny asks with a laugh.

Lord Land looks at us with anger in his eyes not that it mattered to us. We knew what his new daughter and law was like and if that was what he wanted well then we were saving Clara from heart break. Fanny had other ideas though.

"Doesn't your son's future wife need to be pure?" Fanny questioned as the woman eyes lowered to the ground embarrassed to look up.

"Yes and I can say that Angelica is as pure as can be." Lord Land states proudly.

"I say that is a lie, our stable boy I am sure could even-" Fanny starts but I put my hand over her mouth.

"Of course Lord Land, you know best of course." I state.

Just then the door opens and Clara looks to us with a small smile as Plumtree was right behind her. Something told me they heard the whole conversation. Laughing Clara walked out and looked right at Lord Land and I could tell what she was about to say wasn't going to be kind.

"Lord Land, I am sure all your breeding needs will be taken care of by Angelica. Our horses have taken quite kindly to her when she visits." Clara says with a laugh and I see Plumtree put his hand on her shoulder while he tried to hold back a laugh.

What happened between those two? What in the world could make them look so happy so quickly? Lord Land did something very shocking next. Lord Land grabbed the sleeve of Clara's dress and pulled it making it tear right off and rip to the bodest of the dress. Plumtree grabbed her pulling her back then remove his jacket to cover her.

"How dare you sir!" Plumtree yells at Lord Land angrily.

Anger was a new part of Plumtree I had never seen but I could easily say it was a sight I did not prefer. Plumtree held Clara close and stared Lord Land daggers just as George came down the stairs. I am sure that was not the sight he was expecting to see.
