Chapter 10
Clara's POV
Standing in shock was helping no one but Westley must have heard me enter as he quickly scrambled for his clothes. Of course the woman grabbed her dress and took off further into the barn. Wow talk about being a coward. I lean against the door frame knowing the moment he comes to close to me I will take action.
"It's not what it looks like." Westley tries to explain to me while quickly putting his clothes on. "She's just a random girl she meant nothing to me."
"You're just digging your grave deeper." I reply to him as he finishes dressing and starts to walk my way. "Women are not just tools that men can get pleasure out of then leave, you truly are despicable."
Turning to leave he grabs my arm and my body reacts just as someone else enters the barn. Without looking I turn and punch Westley right in the jaw and he stumbles backwards just for a moment. Regaining his position Westley looks at me like I had just hit a royal. He is about to walk forward again but the person who entered comes to stand before me.
"Westley, you will have some explaining to do to Tom and you had better pray that he lets you keep your job for it will be entirely up to him. I would hate to think I employ someone like you but I highly suggest you keep away from every woman here or you will regret it." Jane tells him in a very stern voice.
Jane turns around and takes my arm leading me out of the barn. I had so many emotions running through my head at this point I didn't know which one to focus on or what to do about them. Walking back inside the house we could hear three people talking. I looked at Jane confused but all she did was give me a friendly smile and a wink. We walked into the sitting room and there stood and woman and man I had never met before with Fanny talking their ears off.
"Ah this must be the young woman you were speaking of." the man says walking up to Jane and myself.
"Yes, this is Clara. Fanny why don't you go for a short walk? I would like to discuss something with just these three." Jane suggest, with a confused nod Fanny stands and walks out of the room and I begin to feel like I am in trouble.
"So you are like me then are you not? I mean you aren't from this time period?" the woman asks rising from the sofa.
"No, I am from the year 2015. What year were you from if you don't mind me asking?" I ask her curious to know where the woman was originally from.
"Not at all, I am from 1943. Quite a change to come to a time like this isn't it?" she asks me with the same kind of friendly tone Jane does. "I know my dear that things are quite confusing right now but when I came here I took this as God sending me to my rightful time period. I did not bode well in my own time but here oh here I have had the greatest adventure of my life. Forgive me this is my husband Thomas Heartwell."
I smile at the man who nods at me and then continues talking to Jane. So this was a woman from somewhat close to my time period yet she chose to stay here? I mean I guess a part of me could understand why but wouldn't she miss anything from her time? What could have been so strong to make her stay here in this time?
"I bet you are wondering why I stayed and didn't try and get back to my own time?" she asks me because obviously I had been silent too long.
"Yes, well I mean I understand you credit God but there is a big time difference between the times." I say as we begin to walk about the room.
After explaining to me that her family had died in the war and that she was left homeless and poor with barely and food I began to understand the reason why she had decided to stay. After all now she had a home, a husband and anything she could ever want. I still felt sorry for her through. All because of WWII she lost everything but regained it in this time.
"A lot to absorb I understand. If you need someone to talk to please tell Jane and she will send for me. I'm Elana by the way." she tells me as she offers me a hug. "It's going to be alright Clara."
I smile as our hug ends and she walks to her husband. After a while they do leave and for some odd reason Fanny wants me to go into town with her. Why I have no idea but Jane tells me that she thinks it is a good idea that I agree. So of course I decided to go.
Once we got to the small town she began to drag me through shop after shop. Oh and I thought the mall was bad in the future. This woman had to stop in every single shop! Now I know why I was invited, I was the pack mule. Walking out of the last shop trying to follow Fanny I bump right into someone and fall backwards right onto my bum!
"Oh dear lord, forgive me miss I did not see you." I hear a somewhat familiar voice tell me as I look up and am somewhat shocked to see George Land looking down at me with his hand offering to me.
I smile as I accept his hand and he helps me up. Really not knowing what to say until I begin to dust myself off. George as nice as he is begins to pick up the packages that Fanny forced me to carry.
"Hard to see anyone over those." I tell him as we make eye contact.
"Are these all yours?" he asks me with an eye brow raised.
"No, none at all actually they are all Miss Austen's niece. I was just invited to carry them." I tell him as I attempt to take the packages but he moves out of my reach.
"You don't need to carry these, if anything you need to watch where you are going." George teases me with a sly smile on his face.
"I could accuse you of the same thing Lord Land." I tell him as I tease him back.
That seems to make his face turn a bit sad though. Oh dear what in the world have I done now? All I did was call him oh by his title. I forget he usually doesn't like to be called by his title and I just did it in public. Nice job Clara.
"Back to Lord Land? I was only teasing with you Clara." George tells me as he turns to leave but I put my hand on his arm.
"I am sorry, I was trying to tease you back but obviously failed miserably." I admit to him as he turns back to me and I can see the smallest hint of a smile.
"There you are! Come we have two more shops to go to!" Fanny calls out for me.
I roll my eyes as she comes up and see Lord Land, that's when her whole attitude changes. I know she likes Plumtree but a part of me wonders if she just wants someone with money or title whatever you have to call it in this time but in my time we would call her a gold digger and something told me she was going to try again but a protective feeling for George came over me. I took the packages and handed them back to Fanny.
"You can carry them yourself. The walk will do you some good." I tell her with a smile as I turn and begin to walk off with George right beside me.
"That was very brave." George tells me and he nudges me playfully.
"Perhaps I was just tired of being treated like a slave instead of a guest." I retort as we continue to walk right to the edge of the small town.
Looking around at all this open space I couldn't help but smile because for me this was what freedom looked like. No big cities of people pushing you around this was somewhere you could just be happy to lay down in the grass and watch as the clouds pass.
"You seem to be in your own little world." George's voice pulls me out of the my daydream.
"Would you like to join me in my dream world? After all you must have a sense of adventure don't you?" I question him as I begin to walk into the field with George just a few steps behind me.
Once we got a bit further out I lay down right there in the tall grass and George lays down beside me. Lucky the grass was overgrown so no one would see us laying out here together which I am sure is also a big no no. Still I didn't care as I laid there and watched the clouds. A part of me still couldn't help but reply what happened earlier. Westley and some random woman.
"George? Have you ever been betrayed before?" I ask him as I look over at him.
"A few times, why do you ask?" he replies as he turns to me and rests his body on his elbow.
"I'm still not use to walking into barns and seeing someone who claims to like you being with another woman. A part of me feels betrayed but it is such a small part." I tell him as he nods.
"Maybe that is because you only thought you liked him with your head and not your heart. Not all men are loyal though that is a sad truth but there are some that are." he tells me as I look back to the clouds above my head.
"They must be a rare breed then, for I have yet to meet one."
"We're around, if you and I were courting then I would be loyal to you. However considering that you have gone through this emotion quite recently I would be willing to wait." he tells me as I look back over to him.
"Wait for me? You just met me and now you wish to be seen with me more often? Not to mention if we were courting wouldn't I have to be like a Lady or something?" I question him and all he does is chuckle at me.
"You already are a Lady, Clara and yes would it be such a bad thing to get to know you on a more personal level? Of course I would need Miss Austen's permission but I do not see why she would reject the thought unless you can think of something?" he says as he sits up and I follow his action.
"No, I cannot think of a reason. George you could have any woman here and I do many anyone why in the world would you chose someone like me?"
"Perhaps I see the diamond in the rough?" he asks with a smile.
