Chapter 1: Snuggle

This, Kuroba Kaito mused, as he snuggled up to his taller companion, was the best way to spend the evening before a heist. No. Scratch that. It was the best way to spend most evenings. A warm hand snaked it's way around his waist as his companion pulled him closer, and Kami-sama, Kaito was glad his mother and Aoko weren't around, because their snuggling on the couch had mutated from what could have been the platonic friends-fell-asleep-on-each-other-whilst-chatting variety to more of the prelude-to-making-out variety.

Especially considering just who his companion was. If Aoko ever figured it out... he wondered how long it would take for her to bludgeon him to death with her mop. Probably not long. It would depend on how angry she was he supposed.

Kaito's companion made a soft, very adorable sound that had the magician melting into a puddle inside as deep honey coloured eyes blinked sleepily down at him. Damn that was a good look on him. Okay, so there wasn't a significant height difference between the two, but his companion's two and a half inch height advantage was really, really noticeable when they curled up together on the couch like this.

Somewhere outside the room, a single screech followed by several decidedly cheeky coo's could be heard, but neither teen reacted. The doves and Watson had been sharing an aviary/room for nearly a year now without a single casualty, so the odd coo and the occasional outraged squawk were easily ignored in favour of more important things, like being 'sickeningly adorable with each other' (According to both Baya and Jii-chan. Who Kaito was almost certain were also being 'sickeningly adorable together' behind closed doors.).

Kaito was drifting off when he heard a very annoying and very familiar voice echo through the house, and was suddenly up, downstairs and halfway to the front door before his blonde partner could even register the movement in his sleep befuddled mind. The magician was internally panicking as he scooped up Saguru's shirt from where it lay and hastily shoved it into the laundry basket before answering the door, hoping Aoko wouldn't be in one of her really inquisitive moods, because that usually ended in her searching through his stuff, for whatever bizarre reason she had at the time.

Kaito was a little bit wary of Aoko when Saguru was staying over, because one day, she was going to find him (though she hadn't found the hidden room yet, so there was always that bolt-hole.) and completely freak out, because Kaito knew Aoko wasn't stupid, and finding a half naked, half asleep detective dozing on the couch was not going to end well for him. Or Saguru. Both Kaito and Aoko heard the faint sounds of someone moving around upstairs, and before Kaito could distract his friend, she was already up the stairs and looking into the first room.

Hakuba saguru could hear Aoko-chan approaching the room he was in and swore softly to himself in English. Here he was, in Kaito's house, of all places, messy haired, dozey-eyed and displaying a love bite that resembled a kid caricature on his right shoulder. If she saw him... he dreaded to think what sort of half baked and probably half true conclusion she would draw. Saguru would have to admit to being impressed with himself for not jumping violently in fright when Kaito seemingly materialised from the wall, a barely disguised look of fear on his face. Saguru fully understood that particular look.

The magician beckoned the detective over silently, pushing a piece of faded wallpaper to one side and motioning for him to follow, both boys bolting into the hidden passage when the door handle began to move. Saguru watched with curiosity as his boyfriend messed with the wall a bit, sliding it back into place, with a silence and fluidity that was probably impossible to replicate.

That made three secret doors in this house now, and Saguru wondered if there were any more secrets hidden in the building. Wait. Who was he kidding. His boyfriend was a second generation international phantom thief, whose parents were both phantom thieves in their own rights. Of course there were more secrets to be found. However... he was snapped out of his thoughts as Kaito snatched his hand and led the way down the pitch black passage, and after exactly ten point two seconds, the pair emerged into a room that Saguru always felt a little wary in.

"Ru, stay here whilst I scare her off. Don't touch anything but the coffee maker." Saguru was given exactly two seconds to nod an affirmative, before the magician was gone in a puff of orange smoke that fizzled out relatively quickly. With no choice but to just wait it out -he didn't know who was worse when angry/upset, Aoko-chan with her mop, or Kaito with his magic- he made himself a cup of tea and sat down with an unfortunately familiar feeling that he was going to get caught in the crossfire of mop and magic at school on Monday.

Meanwhile, Kaito was doing his level best to dissuade Aoko from going into his room, because he knew for a fact that his monocle was still on the bedside table where he'd left it, lens cracked and awaiting repair. He knew if he rushed in before her and grabbed it, she would immediately suspect something. Probably not the actual truth (considering how many times he'd used her as an alibi) but something that would probably earn him a place in her bad books for at least a month. He was seriously contemplating the merits of knocking Aoko out, when the irate girl's phone went off.

She answered it, glared at Kaito for a good ten seconds before hanging up and grabbing the magician by his shirt, somehow lifting him from the floor despite her shorter stature. Kaito squeaked. What had he done this time? He was pretty sure she hadn't found any of his doves in her house for weeks (they were getting very good at hiding it seemed), and he was certain he hadn't done anything too awful prank-wise recently...

"You're lucky this time, Bakaito, I have a date to get to. Ruin it or prank them, and I'll do to you what tou-san's always threatening to do to Kaitou Kid. Ok?" The last word was said in a deceptively sweet tone that made Kaito eternally glad that he fell for his detective best friend and not his childhood friend. With an over dramatic flourish, the girl left, humming a tune to herself as she deliberately slammed the door.

As soon as he was sure Aoko was out of earshot, Kaito made his way back to his little bolt-hole, using his most frequently used hidden door to get there, stopping to pick up his broken monocle from his bedside table on the way. He should repair it before he went to bed, so it was ready for tomorrow. Saguru was sipping at his tea, a notebook and pen in one hand as he stared at a page. Kaito frowned. Why was Saguru... oh. Was that what he thought it was?

"They'll be there this time, Kaito. And I won't be. You know I planed to meet with Mouri-chan. Though why you want me to get to know someone who I know can put me through a wall with one hit, I don't know. And Be Careful. Not even Edogowa-kun is going to be enough to help you if they don't miss." The concern in the detective's voice was evident, but Kaito was used to it by now. A sniper or two wasn't going to deter him from his personal mission, even if they were getting better at predicting his movements and catching him off guard now. Hell, if Watson hadn't gone for Snake's eyes two heists ago, he wouldn't be here to argue or disagree with his stubborn boyfriend.

"I know Ru. I'll be careful. I'll even wear the bulletproof suit this time if that makes you feel any better. I want all this to be over as much as you do. I hate stealing. You know that." Saguru raised an eyebrow. Not a phrase one would expect from an internationally wanted jewel thief, especially one as good at his job as Kaitou Kid, but then, Kaito was full of weird little surprises like that. (Saguru's clothes and lunches notwithstanding of course.)

He didn't voice any of his concerns though; he did that enough as it was; instead choosing to simply observe his thief as he went about repairing the glass in the monocle.

Saguru was fairly surprised to find just how many of the thief's gadgets were repaired and maintained by the teen himself, though things like his suit, hat and cape were easily repaired with a few pieces of fabric and deft sewing that put most seamstresses to shame. To look at it, the suit, hat, cape and tie all looked brand new, even at close quarters, so when he'd first discovered the thief repaired his suits, he'd been more than a bit surprised. He'd assumed the thief simply replaced the suit when it got damaged.

Then there were the things like the modified grapple gun and the custom card gun. Two items Kaito had designed/redesigned and built himself, and spent a fair amount of time on before each heist. Saguru wasn't exactly stupid, but the seemingly complex mechanisms of both guns were beyond him, and he doubted any engineering professor or inventor could do any better. Of course, those were only the basics. Saguru highly doubted Kaito had learnt any of his skills at school. Unless he'd gone to night school for master thieves or something, not that there was such a thing. He hoped.

Of course, all the checks and repairs were done fairly quickly, and before Saguru knew it, Kaito had dragged him from the comfort of the chair and up the spiral staircase and back into his room, where they both got ready for bed. (Kaito still found it amusing that the blonde owned nothing but kid caricature print nightclothes, whereas Saguru found it vastly comical to see Kaito wearing soccer ball print pj's, considering how much Edogowa Conan had turned the thief against it.)(Jii-chan and Baya had skewed senses of humour it seemed.)

Saguru was grateful for Kaito being such a light sleeper, because he was more than just a little afraid of Nakamori-chan's reaction if she ever caught them as they were now; snuggled up together in the same bed, wearing easily removed pyjamas. A warm hand snaked around his waist and pulled him closer, a nose burying itself in his chest. He wrapped his arms around the magician and returned the embrace, suddenly overcome with sleep. Neither teen heard Saguru's phone ring, both oblivious as the slept on.
