They are Baby Hellhounds

"Sorry, Lee," Tiffany muttered.

I frowned. "Okay. Well, when he gets back, tell him I came by."

She nodded and muttered a 'bye'. I headed back to my Porsche.

Yeah, I got my baby back. I think it's because I haven't been hanging out with Embry in a while. It's been a few days since I last spoke to him but I guess that's enough for my dad to give me back my car. This was a good thing, but I found it hard to celebrate this without Embry.

I decided I didn't want to go home yet, which really was a bad thing to do. I mean, everytime I decide that, something happens. For example, a monster shows up and I nearly get killed. Then, I'd come back home and my mom would play the part of over-protective mother and I'd probably not be allowed out of the house for a week or so.

But yeah, it was a stupid thing to do. I didn't care, though. Embry was being a jerk, avoiding me all of a sudden. It wasn't only me he stopped talking to, but I guess I was affected more since the last time I saw him was when he kissed me.

I don't know how long I had been walking but I knew it wasn't close to an hour. I would exaggerate and say it's been an hour at least, but it was really maybe just five minutes.

"Stupid best friend," I mumbled to myself. "Kiss me, then avoid me the next day. I mean, who does that? He's dead the next time I see hi--"

The low growl cut me off and I turned around.

Holy Hades. The hellhounds weren't as big as I was used to, therefore leading me to conclude that they were baby hellhounds. What they lacked in size was made up for by their number.

As the four monsters stepped out of the trees, I realized they weren't hellhounds at all. They were wolves. Wolves the size of horses. Dear Father, save me.

I took one step back and one wolf growled at me.

I was scared. Why wouldn't I be? There were four huge wolves looking like they wanted to kill me. I mean, I could probably still survive since I had my weapons, but then I remembered how Celestial Bronze and Stygian Iron only worked on Gods, demigods and monsters. These were just animals. My weapons wouldn't work at all.

I tried to figure out a way to escape. The wolves were watching me, waiting for me to make a move. I waited, too, for the wolves t make a move. For a moment, it was silent. I tried not to show it, but I knew they could smell my fear.

This was the closest I was to death. I was helpless. So much for being the awesome demigod daughter of Hades. I was going to be ripped apart by wolves.

I looked to my left, where a gray wolf stood. It was a beautiful creature, too bad I was going to be killed by it.

There was something familiar about the wolf, but I couldn't tell what it was. Its eyes caught mine and there was one name that popped into my head.

"Embry."

The wolf's eyes softened. I relaxed a bit, until the dark wolf barked. The gray wolf growled back. The wolves were distracted and I took this as the opportunity to run.

The wolves didn't run after me, and I didn't pause to see why. I drove home as fast as I could.

Instead of all of the wolves occupying my mind, all I could think of was that gray wolf. That one gray wolf with darks spots on its fur. Why did it remind me so much of Embry?

I shook my head. I was going crazy. If that wolf reminded me of Embry then I definitely was crazy. I wasn't thinking straight. The next thing I knew, I was being stopped by a police officer.

After being told that I was going over the speed limit, I was given a ticket. I didn't care much of the ticket, more of my mom's reaction when she finds out about it. I mean, this was Forks. Almost everyone knew everyone.

I promised not to go over the limit again, then I was let go. I started driving again, making sure I was at the appropriate speed.

I arrived at home and rushed up to my room. Waiting for my mom to call me and scold me for the ticket had been painfully long. She wouldn't be too angry as long as I wasn't hurt, but I just got my car back. I wasn't planning on losing the privilage to use it so soon.

When my mom finally knocked on my door, I braced myself for the scolding. Instead of looking disappointed, she was smiling as she opened the door.

"Hey, Lee," she greeted. I nodded, unsure of what to do.

She surprised me more with the next words to come out of her mouth.

"Embry stopped by."

I must have looked confused, which I was. I mean, why would Embry come over and not tell me?

"What did he say?" I asked.

She chuckled. "He looked nervous, and he told me to tell you that he says, 'Hi,' " she said. "I take it that you haven't talked to each other yet. That was all he had to say."

I didn't answer and mom moved to leave. Just before she could close the door, she came back inside. "And about the ticket," she mentioned and I gave her a sheepish smile. "Don't get another one, or else I will ground you."

I nodded, and she walked out of my room.

I didn't know what was more surprising. That she hadn't lectured me about driving safely or that Embry had stopped by, when he'd been avoiding me for some time now.
