In Which ANGRY and EMBRY In The Same Sentence Becomes Overused
Embry was angry, much to my dismay. I was hoping for a nice reunion between us but he was yelling at me.
It was so bad that Natty had to step in and remind him that I was injured. His eyes widened when he realized that I was and he muttered multiple apologies. I didn't have it in me to say anything back so I just made my way inside Emily's house.
Yeah, we didn't even make it inside when Mt. Embry exploded.
Natty and Andi followed after me, but Embry didn't. I was guessing that he snapped and went all wolf.
I pulled out my extra baggie of ambrosia and put a small piece of the food of the gods in my mouth. Natty and Andi did the same.
Emily brought a tray of cookies to the table. "What happened?" she asked as she we each grabbed a cookie.
I cringed at the memory but managed to give her the short version of our encounter with the hellhound. She was worried, as expected, but she wasn't angry.
I could understand why they would be worried. What I couldn't understand was why Embry was so angry at me. He should have been at least relieved that I was alive. Yeah, I made him worry but I was fine now. It was nothing to get so worked up about.
"Lee, why do you always have to give him such a hard time?" It was Quil. "I know you're annoyed, but don't you think of how Embry feels?"
I let out a sigh. Quil had a point, I guess. Truth was, I couldn't possibly know what is on Embry's mind all the time. A lot of times I'm too selfish to think of anyone else but myself.
Still, I think Embry didn't have a valid excuse to get angry.
The rest of the pack arrived, looking quite surprised at the presence of my cousins.
"Who's that?" Paul asked, pointing at Natty and Andi.
"That can introduce herself, thank you very much," Natty muttered. "Natalia Howard, " She pointed at Andi, who looked like she wanted to be anywhere but here. Not in a rude this-place-is-disgusting kind of way, more like a despite-how-badass-she-could-be-her-more-timid-personality-was-showing-and-she-was-uncomfortable kind of way. "That's Andi. We're Ashley's cousins."
Paul nodded in greeting. "You two are half-gods, too?"
"Demigods," Natty corrected. "My father is the king of the gods."
Paul snorted. "And that makes you, what, a princess?" he said. "Hate to break it to you, Blondie, but I just don't see it."
Natty rolled her eyes and at the same moment thunder rumbled. I guess Natty has better control over her abilities now. "You better watch you're mouth, mutt. I get pissed off pretty easily."
I had to roll my eyes at Natty's attempt at sounding badass. Apparently Paul also wasn't convinced.
I cut in before they could start arguing some more. "Natty and Andi are here to help us with our little vampire problem," I said.
But of course someone had to notice my use of the words us and our.
"Wait, when did this become our problem. This is the pack's problem, not yours," Paul commented. "Just let the pack handle it."
"Well, I'm a part of this pack now, whether you like it or not. You can blame that damn Imprint bond for that," I retorted.
I couldn't really avoid an argument, could I?
Before it could really turn into a fight, Andi cut in. She always was the calm one out of the three of us.
"We're here now, so just let us do what we came to do," she said. "We're here to help. Just be thankful and accept it."
"And just how are you going to help? You're just a bunch of teenage girls."
"Paul, that's enough," Sam suddenly said. He had just walked in but I guess he had heard us. "We can't be fighting right now."
"I wasn't trying to start a fight," Paul defended. "I just wanted to know what kind of powers they had."
I saw Natty roll her eyes and she muttered a curse in English under her breath. The wolves probably heard it but they didn't say anything. Well, Paul sent a glare at her direction but he didn't really have anything to say.
Sam turned to my cousins, a serious look on his face. "I'm Sam Uley."
Natty nodded, suddenly looking serious. "Natty Howard, daughter of Zeus," she introduced herself. "Andi is a daughter of Poseidon." It amazed me how serious and leader-like Natty could be. It was different from the sassy temperamental Natty I was used to.
"I'm not too familiar with Greek mythology, but that means you two can fight, right?" Sam asked.
Natty rolled her eyes. Well, there goes the respectful Natty...
"All demigods can fight. It's just a matter of how seriously they take it," she said. "There are some seriously good fighters in Aphrodite cabin. You can't underestimate any demigod. We're all badass in some way."
It was true, I guess. No one ever guessed a child of Iris, the rainbow goddess, could be a black belt in taekwondo or something like that. Even the physically weaker kids were good. I mean, not with weapons and stuff, but with the talents and abilities inherited by the godly parents.
I wasn't sure if Sam believed Natty. My thoughts were confirmed when Sam asked what exactly they could do.
So Natty used this as an excuse to show off her mastery of her powers. I was impressed when I heard the cackle of lighting, indicating that Natty was able to control lightning now. Looking through the window, one of the trees outside -- the one that Natty's lightning hit -- caught fire and it was up to Andi to stop it.
"Did you practice that or something? Andi just knew that you were going to do that," I noticed.
Natty giggled and shrugged. Andi sighed and replied, "She does it all the time at camp when a new kid comes in."
I snorted. "Never thought you liked the attention," I commented.
Just then a voice cut in, saying something about the scene that occurred outside. I recognized the voice as Seth's.
"What happ-" he was in the middle of saying and then he froze. Leah stood right next to her brother, looking worried. She put a hand on his shoulder and looked to where he was staring. I followed.
Andi was looking confused. Her eyebrows were scrunched as she looked to me.
"Ashley? What's going on?"
Well, Aphrodite's getting a little excited now, isn't she?
...
