Chapter 2 | Shattered Promises
Her POV
In the bustling streets of England, I found myself scrolling through social media on my way home from the office. Caught in the mindless distractions of the virtual world, I stumbled upon a picture that tore through me like a blade: your image, accompanied by a girl, with the words "Soon To Be Married" etched beneath it.
Shock coursed through my veins, freezing my every thought. Without a moment's hesitation, I booked a plane ticket back to you. I couldn't restrain myself, even knowing that you were moving on, perhaps finding happiness without me. Still, I had to come back. I had to face the painful reality that you were slipping away from my grasp forever.
As the plane soared through the clouds, fear constricted my heart. Doubt poured over me like cascading rain, questioning my every decision. What would your reaction be when you saw me? Would you tell me that our love had faded? That you had found solace in the arms of another?
The unknown plagued my every step, and I trembled at the prospect of your rejection.
Two agonizing days passed, and you remained unaware that I had returned. I didn't have the courage to confront you, yet there I was, hoping against hope that fate's invisible hand would guide our paths to converge once again.
And then it happened—a moment that sent shockwaves through my entire being. As if the universe conspired to bring us face to face, I caught a fleeting glimpse of you amidst the crowd. The same person whom I had shattered years ago, the one who still held a piece of my heart.
Our eyes locked, and the world around us seemed to blur into insignificance. I sensed the kaleidoscope of emotions flickering across your face, from joy to tears, and from tears to anger, all within mere seconds. We stood there, connected by an unbreakable gaze, not daring to blink.
I yearned to bridge the distance between us, but fear rooted me to the spot, holding me captive in the intensity of the moment.
With each step you took towards me, anticipation weighed heavy upon my trembling frame. As you neared, the word "Why?" pierced the air, laden with a multitude of unspoken questions that danced on the tip of your tongue. I knew there were a million whys lurking in your mind, demanding the answers that only I could provide. But how could I begin to unravel the complexity of emotions that had driven me to leave you behind?
Silent and paralyzed, I struggled to find the right words to express the cacophony of thoughts and emotions swirling within me. Would you even believe me? Could my fragile excuses bear the weight of your shattered trust?
Your voice, filled with a mix of longing and bitterness, broke the silence, demanding my attention. "Are you going to say something?" you implored, your eyes searching mine for a glimmer of truth.
"I am sorry," I whispered, my voice echoing with the weight of regret that had haunted me all this time.
"I don't need your sorry," you pressed, anguish lacing your words. "Just tell me why did you go to England, leaving me?" Your eyes, once filled with love, now held a mixture of pain and accusation.
Summoning all the courage that remained within me, I took a deep breath, ready to confront the truth. "Because I got a big opportunity," I confessed, my voice trembling with a mix of guilt and vulnerability.
"Oh, great! Then why are you back? Why do you even care? Aren't you already married?" you asked, your voice tinged with bitterness, the words slicing through my already fragile heart.
Caught between the remnants of the past and the piercing reality of the present, tears welled up in my eyes as I struggled to find the strength to respond. But as I looked into your anguished eyes, I knew that mere words could never encapsulate the depth of my remorse nor mend the shattered pieces of your trust.
In that painful moment, my heart shattered further, as fragile as glass, as the truth I desperately tried to convey collided with your walls of disbelief. I watched helplessly as the veil of mistrust clouded your eyes, eclipsing the love that once radiated between us. Desperation rose within me, clawing at my throat, begging for an opportunity to exonerate myself.
"You have a really big misunderstanding," I said, my voice trembling with raw emotion.
But you remained resolute, your hardened gaze fixed upon me. "I don't think so. I guess I know what would have happened. You married a guy who was richer than me at that time, but now you learned that I, your ex who is now thousands of times richer than your husband, is getting married. So, you left your husband. This is what happened, right?"
"No! Trust me, Kookie," I pleaded, my voice trembling all this while.
"Don't you even dare to call me that! You lost that right," you snapped, extinguishing any remnants of endearment that had once bound us together. Each word carved itself into my flesh, a reminder of the pain I had inflicted upon you.
I took a tentative step towards you, reaching out as if my touch could dissolve the doubts that swirled in your eyes. "Listen, Jungkook, I was never married," I implored, my voice teetering on the edge of desperation.
"If it's like that, then why did you leave?" you questioned, and I could see your broken self through your heart.
"Because I got a big opportunity," I repeated, your laced with fear.
"And that big opportunity was getting married to a guy richer than me?" you replied, my voice tinged with hatred.
"No, it wasn't," I exclaimed, my voice filled with frustration and pain. "Yes, it was," you interjected, unable to see beyond the walls of your own hurt.
Suddenly, our voices became intertwined, blurring the scene around us. The intensity of our exchange stopped people in their tracks, their gazes fixed on us.
"Will you guys leave?" you yelled, your voice cutting through the air like a sharp blade. The people quickly averted their gazes, scurrying away like frightened mice.
You turned away from me. "You should go back to your husband. You can never get me back as I don't love you anymore." you spat; your words laced with venom.
Defeated, I watched as you turned on your heel and walked away, your footsteps echoing in my shattered heart. Tears welled up in my eyes, my vision clouded by the cascading waterfall of remorse and regret.
Stumbling through the streets, my heartache guided me to the house we had built together, the walls whispering our shared memories. I unlocked the door, stepping into the eerie silence that enveloped the empty space. Memories swirled around me, tinged with bittersweet nostalgia.
The familiar aroma of your cologne lingered in the air, a cruel reminder of the love that now lay fractured and abandoned.
The weight of my guilt bore down upon me. I blamed myself for breaking you, for extinguishing the light that once danced in your eyes. Each tear that fell was a testament to my own shortcomings, as I questioned my worthiness of your love.
Collapsing onto the cold wooden floor, I held my knees close to my chest, tears streaming down my face in an unstoppable torrent. The pain wracked my body, an agonizing symphony of regret and sorrow.
"Kookie," I whispered into the emptiness, that endearing name I had given you so long ago. But you had asked me never to call you that again, a painful reminder that our love had frayed beyond repair. The sound of my voice, void of the warmth and tenderness you once cherished, reverberated within the hollow room.
I clung to the fragments of hope, praying that one day the wounds we inflicted upon one another would heal, that forgiveness and understanding would find their way back to our broken souls. But for now, all I could do was weep, my tears a testament to the love that now lay in ruins, and the depths of my remorse for what we had lost.
The house that once echoed with laughter and love now embraced my anguished cries, as if mourning the shattered dreams, we had once nurtured within its walls. I dug my fingers into the floorboards, seeking solace in the physical pain as it distracted me from the ache in my heart.
Memories swirled through my mind, like delicate tendrils of smoke dissipating in the still air. I remembered the way we had meticulously planned each corner of this house, the dreams we had woven into the very fabric of its existence. We had believed that its walls were built on the foundation of our love—a love that now lay crushed beneath the weight of our mistakes.
As the night stretched on, loneliness wrapped around me like a suffocating shroud. Sobs racked my body, each tear a bitter testament to the choices we had made, to the irreparable damage I had inflicted upon us both.
In the depths of my despair, I blamed myself for the broken man you had become. Guilt consumed me, casting a dark shadow over any remnants of self-worth that clung to my fractured spirit.
But amidst the self-condemnation, a flicker of determination ignited within me. I knew that I couldn't allow our story to end in tragedy. I had to find a way to reach you, to make you understand the depths of my remorse, to rebuild the trust we had so carelessly shattered. And I knew what I had to do.
