The gravel under the tires cracked as we pulled up to the front of the church. Harry and I drove separately from Emma and her family, declining when James had asked us if we wanted to ride with them. We agreed on following them there and my nerves before we left were focused more on the fact Emma was giving me attitude and not church. But now, that we were finally in front of the white building that had people littering the grass, greeting each other and making their way inside, it felt like a rock was sitting in my stomach. My hands were under my thighs to relieve some of the tension, and I gripped the seat underneath me when Harry moved to open his door.
He paused when he saw that I hadn't moved in my seat, my gaze focused on Emma and her family climbing out of the car. "Hey, are you alright?"
I nod but don't say anything and Harry reaches out to touch my hand, his fingers grazing the back of it and bringing a warmth up my wrist. I blink and turn to look at him, his lips lifting in the corner.
"Kay, it's going to be fine." He squeezes my hand reassuringly and I take a deep breath, nodding and moving away from him to open my door. I slide out, my feet hitting the pavement as I tug my skirt back in place. I brush it out and adjust my sweater to make sure I look put together. I feel under-dressed as I watch women walking in with conservative dresses and closed toe heels. Even Charlotte was more dressed up then I was with her light blue dress that stopped right above her knees and her white cardigan. The only thing that kept me from jumping back in that car and demanding Harry to drive us back to the house is the fact that Charlotte was also wearing white flats like me, making me feel just a little bit comforted.
Harry walked around the car to meet me just as Charlotte bounded towards me, looping her arm through mine and giving me a wide smile.
"You're sitting with us right?" She asks excitedly and my eyes move to Emma, who is standing further back with her lips pressed together. I know she heard Charlotte but she pretends to be too busy fixing Aiden's shirt.
"Yeah...sure." I force a smile and Charlotte begins to lead me to the double doors of the church, my other hands reaching for Harry's anxiously. He immediately grips my hand and follows close behind. I notice how he keeps his head lowered and his hair falls in his face when he does. I open my mouth to ask him what the matter is when I hear a few girls giggling, and I see two girls around the same age as Charlotte staring at Harry. They're whispering to each other and repeatedly looking over their shoulder at him. So that's why he's trying to hide his face.
Charlotte follows my gaze and her eyebrows furrow when she sees the two girls looking at Harry. "They know who he is."
"How do you know?" I ask and Charlotte's eyebrows furrow as she sends the girls a glare they don't see.
"They go to my school. Not my favorite people." She scrunches her nose.
"How come?" I ask, eyeing them when we stop walking to wait for Emma and James to catch up.
"They're just mean." Charlotte mutters, shrugging and looking away when they turn to stare at her. My grip on Harry's hand tightens, and I pull him closer to me then step in the girls line of sight, blocking Charlotte from them. I had the urge to protect her, by the way she hunched her shoulders and dipped her head low I just knew these girls might of done something to her before. The fact that they were drooling over Harry pissed me off more.
"Hopefully they won't say anything about seeing you here." Charlotte says quietly to Harry and his eyes flicker to the girls only for a moment before he turns away from them, fixing his gaze on a bush behind us.
"Let's hope they don't."
"Hey!" James is the first to catch up to us and takes my attention away from the girls when he nudges Aiden towards us. He looks up at his dad in an annoyed way that I have to bite back a laugh when he pouts, and James nods to him encouragingly. Aiden huffs and when he turns around to look up at me he grows timid, taking a step back into his dad's legs and folding his hands behind his back.
"Kaydence, I asked my dad if you were going to sit with us...b-but he told me to ask you myself." He mutters and his brown eyes are watching me through his eyelashes. He's a cute kid.
"I already asked her, nut." Charlotte says and he glares at her, his eyes narrowing.
"I said I would do it." He stomps his foot and Charlotte rolls her eyes, her arm in mine pulling me closer to her.
"Calm down, she said yes, Jesus."
"Charlotte!" Emma hisses behind us and Charlotte jumps, her eyes widening and her shoulders slacking as if she already knows what she's getting yelled at for.
"Sorry, I know sorry. My bad, I forgot." She says in a rush and Emma comes up in front of us, her features twisted in anger.
"How many times have I told you not to use that language and especially right outside church?"
"I know," she sighs and her cheeks turn a little pink, her eyes flickering over to the girls who are now snickering at her for getting scolded. Damn it Emma, shut up.
Emma doesn't say anything else and instead motions for Logan and Aiden to start walking through the double doors. Charlotte and I follow, but Harry lets go of my hand and I try not to show that I'm slightly disappointed. He rests his hand on my shoulder instead and once we're inside, we're led to a wooden pew that's in the middle. I sit on one next to Charlotte while Harry sits on my other side, and he sits with his hands clasped between his legs that are wide open that I'm pressed up right next to Charlotte. I glare at him for it and he arches his eyebrow at me, tilting his head.
"What?"
"Do you have to sit with your legs so wide open?" I whisper quietly and he smirks, his eyes rolling.
"I'm a guy, this is how I sit."
I roll my eyes at his response and he chuckles quietly. I lean back in my seat and take the opportunity to look around. I've never been in a church before so I don't really know what I can compare it to, but from the looks of it, it's really nice. It's not that big, but the front of the... Alter? I think that's what it's called, is pretty fancy. There's stained glass windows on both sides of the walls, and the sun shinning though it makes colorful reflections bounce off the floors. The pews are getting filled quickly and for some reason my stomach twists nervously when I hear the double doors being closed behind me. It doesn't help my nerves either when I notice the girls from outside moving to sit in the pew right across from us. They make it completely obvious they're staring at Harry, but he's oblivious to it, too distracted with looking at the windows.
Some music I've never heard before starts playing, and everyone stands, including Harry. I quickly move to follow along and the priest along with two other people walk down the aisle. I have no idea what's going on, and I'm trying to pay close attention to what they're doing when they walk up the alter. The priest says a few words and suddenly everyone sits, me being the last one standing. My cheeks flush red in embarrassment and Harry takes my hand in his with out hesitation. I guess he can sense I'm feeling just a little uncomfortable.
The mass actually goes by a lot quicker then I thought it would and it surprises me when I notice Harry saying the prayers out loud with everyone else, and how he seems to know what he's doing. I never asked him about his faith, but the fact that he was able to answer my questions about what the priest was doing or what came next, goes to show this isn't his first time going to church. He even had to explain to me what communion was and when I had gone to stand up to follow along with everyone, he bit his lip to keep from laughing when he said you'd have to go through first holy communion to be able to do it. I of course, had no idea what that was so I sat down and crossed my arms before I embarrassed myself more.
I let out a sigh of relief when the priest walked out at the end and people began to gather their stuff to leave. Harry stood up next to me and led me towards the exit, Charlotte and her family right behind us. When we got outside Harry had his head ducked down again and I saw how those two girls were lingering near us, their gaze fixated on only Harry.
"Did you enjoy mass, Kaydence?" James asked politely. Emma had her arms crossed and was watching me with curiosity. She probably thought I hated it.
"Yes, it was interesting." I said honestly. I had no idea what the fuck was going on through out it, but, I did enjoy it. I would definitely want to go again in the future, when I actually knew what I was doing though.
James smiled and looked to Emma, his grin faltering momentarily when he saw the sour look on her face before nudging her with his arm. I don't understand what her problem is honestly. I knew James didn't know who I really was to her, and I understood she didn't want him to. It wasn't like I was going to tell him, and I had a feeling she knew that so what was the big deal? I fought the urge to roll my eyes at her as she glanced up at James with an annoyed expression and he nodded his head towards me. Her eyes narrowed for only a second when she sighed and looked at me.
"Did you want to join us for brunch at a restaurant near by?" She asked kindly, or her version of it anyway.
"No thank you." I said with out hesitation. She had barely spoken to me all morning, and even though James and Charlotte were both very nice, I felt like I needed to give Emma space.
"Oh come on!" Charlotte begged with pleading eyes. I felt bad for saying no, but I honestly didn't want to be around Emma right now. I'd see Charlotte later when we went horse back riding.
"No, I'm sorry," I said again with a small smile. "Harry and I had a late breakfast, but we will meet you guys later for horseback riding?"
"Oh yes, for sure." James nodded with a smile. "You can walk around the side gate of the house by the way, to let yourself in the guest house."
"Okay, thanks." I smiled a glanced at Harry to see him giving James a nod and smile before his eyes dart to the two girls staring at him. He looks away from them and the way he's leaning towards where we parked, it's clear he wants to leave right away.
"We're going to get going now. See you later." I waved at them, getting a wave from everyone except Emma. I turned away from them and Harry was suddenly pulling me to follow him quickly, when a high pitched voice spoke from behind us.
"Harry!" I looked over my shoulder to see one of the girls Charlotte had been talking about jogging towards us, her friend right behind her. "Harry, can we take a photo with you?"
Harry had stopped when they called his name but the moment he heard her say 'photo' he was shaking his head and pulling my hand again. "I'm sorry, it's not appropriate here and we're in a rush."
"Oh, Harry please?" She asked again but he was still shaking his head.
"No, so sorry. Have a nice day." He pulled me faster behind him and I could still hear the girls calling after him but he quickly unlocked the car, hopping in the drivers seat. I climbed in the passenger's seat as fast as I could and Harry didn't even bother putting his seatbelt on before backing out and driving out of the lot.
"I feel bad." He said sighing, pinching his bottom lip between his forefinger and thumb.
"How come?"
"I hate saying no to fans, but it just wasn't the place."
"Ah," I said nodding. "I understand. But if it helps they were mean girls anyways."
"Mean girls?" He asked, his eyebrows lifting. "What do you mean?"
"Charlotte knows them from school, they're apparently not the nicest girls."
"Oh," Harry twisted his lips and shook his head. "Well okay, never mind. I don't feel so bad." He said chuckling and I joined him. We drove back the same route we came from to head back to Emma's house. Harry and I didn't talk much and the music coming from the radio filled the silence, making it comfortable.
We pulled up against the sidewalk minutes later and I climbed out of the car, meeting Harry at the back of it. We walked around the green grass to the side gate of the house that James mentioned and Harry reached over to unlock it since I was too short. He pushed it open once he did and held it open me for as I walked through, then waited for him to close it and meet me.
We walked through the back and made our way through the grass until we saw the guest house from where we were. Harry took me by surprise by slipping his hand into mine, and pulling me closer to him as we walked. I didn't say anything to him but my cheeks heated up when he looked down at me, a smirk playing at his lips.
Once we got to the front I took out my key and unlocked the door, pushing it open to see that all the boys and Nicole were sitting in the living room watching Once Upon a Time. The beds were all pulled out and Nicole was sitting on one with Niall while Liam and Zayn were sitting on another, and Louis took up one by himself. Nicole had a bowl of cereal in her hand and she was still in her pajamas when she looked up at me from the TV and grinned.
"Hey!" She nodded her head to the TV and smiled happily. "They have Hulu, so I'm watching the episodes I missed."
"I honestly don't understand a thing that's going on." Liam says and Nicole rolls her eyes, setting her bowl on the table and folding her legs underneath her when she turns to Liam.
"I already explained it to you, what don't you get?"
"How is that girl, Snow White's and Charming's daughter if they're all the same age?"
"Oh my god, I explained this already. Were you not listening?"
I laughed when Nicole plunged into her explanation to Liam, Niall sitting back and listening intently. I glanced at Louis to see his arms crossed behind his head with his eyes closed that I slipped my flats off and hurriedly tiptoed my way over to him. Right when I reach the end of his bed he opens his eyes, and they widen right when I jump on him.
"Oi!" He groaned when I knocked the air out of him and I rolled off of him, laughing when he made a pained face. "I'm sick of you lot jumping on me."
"Sorry." I giggled and turned my head, glancing over at Harry to see him giving me a small smile before moving to sit on the floor in front of Nicole. He looks like he's listening to the explanation too.
"Hey," I nudge Louis, bringing my voice down to a whisper. This is my chance. "Remember in the car when you started talking about something that happened on the jet with Harry?" Louis nodded and I leaned closer to him to make sure no one heard. "Tell me what happened now."
He stared at me for a moment before his eyes slid over to Harry, who was still listening to Nicole talk and laughing when Liam threw his hands up in confusion. He turned back to me then, pressing his lips together and rolling over on his elbow and leaning his head in his hand. I sat up a little and Louis' eyes drew together momentarily before he spoke.
"We had this huge fight on the jet. And that does include a physical one."
I wince and my eyes widen for only a second when I catch Harry glancing over at us. I don't answer Louis and pretend I'm watching TV until he turns back to Nicole and Liam.
"Physical? You guys fought?"
"Yes. I mean I guess it was my fault, since I did hit Harry first," he winces and shakes his head. "But then he lost it and started hitting me and then Niall when he tried to pull him away and it was pretty bad." He lets out an exasperated sigh and I almost reach out to comfort him but I can feel Harry's eyes on me.
"What made you all fight anyways?" I quietly ask Louis and he visibly tenses at the question. He looks at me with pity and I narrow my eyes at him when he sits up, next to me.
"We were talking about you." He pauses and when I don't say anything he lowers his voice to continue. "We told him to get his shit together and just call you, since we knew deep down he wanted to but...he just lost it and started saying shit."
"Saying shit about me?" I squeak quietly and Louis slowly nods. I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding and I feel a pang of sadness hit me, making me slouch down on the bed. I understand Harry had a completely different attitude when he first got here and had probably said things out of anger, but who's to say it wasn't the truth? What if everything he said he really did mean? And what if he still felt that way, deep down? I wouldn't blame him of course but part of me felt angry, that he would talk shit about me to them. I know I deserve it sort of but still. I never spoke bad about him to Nicole, then again he was perfect so what really bad things was there to say? None. Absolutely none. And I envy him for it.
"He didn't mean it though Kaydence," Louis pats my leg and from the corner of my eye I can see Harry watching. "He was in denial and hurt. He was saying shit he didn't really mean to avoid having to face how he really feels."
"Which is?" I grumble, crossing my arms over my chest and Louis' mouth pulls up to a smile. He leans down next to my ear and I fight the urge to flinch away when I feel his breath fanning my ear. I look over Louis' shoulder and dart my eyes away when I see Harry watching us with his eyes narrowed and his jaw set in place.
"He still loves you. He's still in love, with you."
