Kaydence has had her back turned to me for the past hour and not one word has been spoken from any of us. Niall has his eyes focused on the road, but every now and then I catch his eyes flickering over to Nicole as if he wants to speak to her but isn't sure if he should right now. I can see Nicole's reflection in the window and she has her arms crossed with her jaw set in place, ready to snap if someone were to bother her. There's a lot of tension coming off Kaydence and Nicole, but I know Kaydence's anger is stemmed towards me, and she had no right to be so harsh to Nicole for it.
I want to talk to her, to tell her that what the fans wrote about her was a load of shit and to just ignore it. I'm aware it's not easy to do, considering I have had to deal with a lot of hate in the past and 'ignoring it' is a lot easier said then done.
I shift in my seat, leaning my back against the window as I sigh loudly to get Kaydence's attention but she still has the damn headphones in her ear that I'm positive she can't even hear me.
"You think she can hear me?" I say to Liam from behind me, deciding to test it out myself. Liam's eyes widen for a brief moment then flicker over to Kaydence, and he visibly relaxes when he sees she didn't even look at me.
"I guess not." He whispers and I chuckle at his effort to be quiet.
"You don't need to whisper, who cares if she hears us we're allowed to talk. Just not to her. "
"I don't know if you know this Harry, but Kaydence lowkey scares me." Zayn says and I bark out this loud laugh, and that gets Kaydence's attention.
She turns her head to look at me, she doesn't look angry anymore but has this weary and cautious look on her face when she meets my eyes. She briefly glances at the lads sitting behind us, pressing her lips together before she slowly reaches up and pulls her headphones out of her ears.
"You back with us?" I ask her, and Liam nudges my arm hanging over the headrest.
Her eyes meet mine and for a second I think she's going to snap at me again but instead she just shrugs, moving her hand to push a strand of her hair behind her ear. "Sorry."
My eyebrows shoot up at her word and I lean forward in my seat, tilting my ear towards her. "Excuse me?"
This time she throws me a glare and shakes her head as she sighs, biting the inside of her cheek before turning back to me. "I said, I'm sorry." She pauses, turning around to look at the boys behind us. "You guys too, I'm sorry you had to deal with me."
Louis leans forward, reaching over the seat to squeeze her shoulder. "It's alright love, I like them feisty."
I roll my eyes at Louis' comment but it seems to make Kaydence laugh as she turns back around. She glances between Niall and Nicole, muttering an apology to Niall who happily accepts it. But when she looks to Nicole, she isn't as forgiving as the rest.
"Nicole I'm sorry. "
Nicole stays silent from upfront and I turn my body slightly to look at her reflection. Her lips are pressed into a hard line as if she's trying to keep herself from responding to Kay, her hands balling into fists.
When Nicole doesn't respond again, Kay suddenly unbuckles her seatbelt as she slides to the end of her seat and half stands up in the car. Niall almost has a heart attack and yells for her to sit back down but she doesn't, and instead leans over the console as she throws her arms around Nicole.
"Kay, that's so not safe! Sit back down! " Nicole finally shouts but I can see Kaydence shaking her head from behind.
"Not until you accept my apology."
"Kaydence seriously, what if we get pulled over? Sit down."
Kay tightens her hold on Nicole. "But you're my best friend, please forgive me!"
"Hey! I thought we established I'm the best friend!" Louis says from behind me and I look at him in confusion while that seems to make Nicole giggle.
"Fine, " she sighs and hugs Kaydence back. "I forgive you now please sit back down before Niall crashes the car. "
Kaydence pulls away from Nicole and sits down quickly, sliding back into her seat and pulling the seat belt over her lap. Louis leans back over and mutters to her how his feelings are hurt and she throws him a wink, which he laughs at.
I sit there with my arms crossed over my chest when Kaydence's light brown eyes meet mine. Her smile fades and she now holds a guilty look on her face.
"I'm sorry. "
"For? " I ask her, wanting to actually hear what exactly she's sorry for.
"For snapping at you," She brings her bottom lip between her lip and I force myself to look at her eyes. "And for what I said earlier... when we were talking upfront. "
"Wow, " I smile slightly at her. "I have to admit I didn't expect you to apologize to me at all. "
"Yeah well, i'm trying to be civil with you. "
I narrow my eyes at her and when she blinks at me in return I lean back against the window, sighing in defeat. "I suppose I could try to be civil as well. " She nods her head, bending down to kick her sandals off and tucking her feet under herself.
"Where are we right now exactly?" Zayn asks from behind and I glance out the window, noticing that there's nothing but plain land and very little trees.
"We just entered Nevada awhile ago. " Niall responds.
Louis nudges Zayn's arm and the two share a mischievous look but I can tell what their thinking.
"We're not stopping in Vegas." I tell them and earn a glare from Louis while Zayn throws his hands up in exasperation.
"And why the hell not? What's the rush?" Louis asks and my eyes automatically flicker over to Kaydence. She tilts her head at Louis' question and I can tell she's conflicted about whether to tell them why we're going to Colorado in the first place. She turns to look at me and I give her a slight nod before turning back to the others. "No rush but knowing you two we won't be out of there for days."
Liam chuckles while Louis sings a 'true' and Kaydence laughs momentarily, then throws me a thankful smile that no one else sees.
I don't know why I saved her from having to tell them the truth, but I guess I owed her for allowing them to come in the first place. At least, that's my excuse I keep telling myself although I already know the real reason. You still love her, my subconscious taunts me and I look away from Kaydence's brown eyes before she can read right through me.
For the next hour Louis, Zayn, Liam, Kaydence, and I talk about the tour we had just finished, reminiscing over certain parts. It's nice, but then there are a few moments when I tense anytime the boys bring up a memory of the tour and I fear they might tell Kaydence what I had been doing during those times, but they divert the attention away from me instead. Kaydence's laugh echoes through the car when Zayn tells her a story of how Julian had woken us to record the album, and Zayn had gotten up from his bed in the tour bus to hide. Julian had a fit and a majority of the crew panicked when no one could find him, but he had just been sleeping in a different bunk of the bus. Her laugh is contagious that I find myself laughing as well, staring at Kaydence as she leans her head back against the window and the small dimple in her cheek deepens the wider her smile gets. It sends a familiar warmth through me, seeing her carefree and relaxed around the lads that I begin to daydream about what it would have been like if we had stayed together. We would have been together for a year now, and we would have had many moments like this already. I've noticed that she gets along so well with the others and as much as it annoys the fuck out of me right now because deep down I'm still hurt, it's nice to see that if we had lasted they would of all hit it off. As I'm thinking this I feel a pang of sadness, realizing that although they get along, her and I will never be the same. Bitterness replaces that sadness quickly the longer I stare at her and remember she is the one who left me. She is to blame for what happened to us, not me.
Before I can let my angry thoughts wander any further, Niall groans from the front seat and I look over to see him leaning towards the steering wheel, blinking his eyes rapidly.
"Are you alright?" Nicole asks what I'm thinking, concern taking over her features.
"Yeah, i'm just getting really sleepy."
"Do you want me to drive?" I ask Niall but he shakes his head and waves me off.
"No, you've already driven I can handle it."
Nicole shakes her head. "I don't think so, pull over I'll drive next."
"No, no I'm fine."
"Niall." Nicole gives Niall a challenging look and Niall doesn't hesitate to pull over. I smile as I look between them, they're already acting like a damn couple.
Niall sighs dramatically and unbuckles his seat belt, getting out of the drivers side while Nicole climbs back over the console and into the driver's seat. Niall comes back around to the passenger side, climbing in before he drops into the seat tiredly. He hands Nicole the directions and she pulls away from the side of the road once looking over the map.
Louis pulls out a stack of cards and shuffles them. "Let's play Bullshit."
The five of us agree and Louis separates the cards before we start the game, muttering how he's going to kick our asses because he's such a great liar.
"You obviously have never played against me then." Kaydence smiles at Louis, making him scowl in return.
"It's true, she's a pro at this game." Nicole says from the front.
"Well she has had a lot of practice I'm sure." I say with out thinking, and Kaydence's smile fades as she looks at me in question. Before she can say anything Louis cuts her off and begins the game. He throws a 2 down and we move around the circle each of us taking our turns until Louis calls 'bullshit' on Liam. He ends up being right and we all laugh when Liam groans as he grabs the stack of cards. We keep going and Kaydence puts her card down, Louis narrowing his eyes at her.
"What?" She asks Louis, blinking at him.
"I'm calling Bullshit."
"You sure?"
Louis hesitates, biting his lip and then nodding his head. "Yep, I'm sure."
Kaydence stares at Louis for a moment, her face still and no hint of emotion as she reaches into the stack and turns her card over, a wide smile growing on her face.
"You played me!" Louis shouts, a look of disbelief on his face. He shakes his head as he grins at her, taking the pile of cards in the middle. "God, I love you."
Kaydence laughs along with the boys and that bitter feeling begins to come back but I force myself to pay attention to the game instead of her. It's Louis' turn again and once it's mine, Zayn tries to call me out but ends up being wrong.
"Damn." He mutters while taking the cards. I smirk at him in response and look over at Kaydence. She's supposed to put a Queen down, and I watch her as she looks through her cards in thought. She slips a card out of the three she has left, a serious expression as she places it in the middle.
"One queen. " She leans back against the window, lifting her hand to fiddle with the ends of her hair and my mouth twitches up into a smirk.
"Bull-Shit."
Her eyes dart over to meet mine, her bottom lip jutting out. She narrows her eyes at me then drops her hands into her lap, the same look she gave Louis taking over her face.
"Are you positive?"
"Don't do it man," I hear Louis mutter but I ignore him.
"So, so, positive. " I grin at her, crossing my arms across my chest as she stares at me a moment longer and then turns the card over.
My smile is so big when I see I was right and she reluctantly takes the stack of cards while Zayn, Liam and Louis cheer.
"You got lucky." She says to me but I shake my head.
"Nope, I just know your nervous habits."
She dips her head down to hide from me but I can see the way her mouth twitches slightly, and her cheeks turn a light shade of pink.
"We're going to need to stop for gas!" Nicole shouts from the front and I turn in my seat to look at her. Niall wakes up from the small nap he was taking, picking up his phone and putting a search in google.
"There's a Gas Station in about four miles."
She nods and when I turn back around everyone has forgotten about the card game, moving back to talking about the tour. Niall turns around this time to be part of the conversation and this time I don't mind the old memories, about to settle in to take a nap myself while they talk among themselves.
"The London shows were the best honestly," Liam says. "The after parties were too, remember?"
I open my eyes at the mention of London, growing uncomfortable with the conversation as I think back on that night and just before I can say anything to divert the conversation, Zayn nods. "Yeah, Harry where did you go though? Had you left early?"
I panic for a brief second, about to respond when Niall beats me to it. "Yeah! He was there with Kendall remember? Don't know where you two disappeared to but you guys missed the party. "
I almost throw myself over the console to shut Niall up but instead, swallow the vile coming up my throat at the memory of what happened that night with her. The regret I felt sits in the pit of my stomach and It only worsens when I look over at Kaydence to see her with a disbelieving expression.
"What?" I ask calmly.
She half laughs at my question, her anger clearly displayed on her face. "Seriously? " She says to me and I'm actually surprised at the hostile tone in her voice. I knew she was mad but I hadn't expected her to say anything, especially in front of the lads but her ears are practically fuming.
"What?" I ask again, sighing in exasperation.
"You said you only kissed her once for a pr stunt."
"Who said I kissed her at the party?"
A crease appears in the middle of her forehead as she furrows her eyebrows at me. "Well, what exactly did you two 'disappear' to do?"
I hear Liam mutter a 'fuck' and choose to ignore it as the anger and annoyance towards Kaydence grows. "Why do you care?"
"I don't but you have some nerve to lie about it."
"I have some nerve?" I laugh sarcastically and notice the way the others are shifting uncomfortably. "You're the one who kissed Max."
"Guys, stop it." Nicole says from the front but Kay ignores her.
"Oh that again? Really? At least I admitted to it yesterday unlike you. 'I haven't kissed anyone in the last three months'. " She mimics me and I scoff at the poor job she had done.
"Stop." Nicole says again and this time I'm the one to ignore her.
"I haven't I told the truth, but why am I even arguing with you over this? It was six months ago and last I checked we had broken up, you made that pretty damn clear." I snap at her and instead of it silencing her like I had hoped it would, it only riles her up more.
"How many times are you going to keep throwing that in my face? You don't even know half-." Kaydence is suddenly cut off by the car stopping abruptly, and I dart my hand out to stop myself from flying into the back of the passenger seat. Kay isn't quick enough and she flings forward, the seat belt holding her back from hitting the seat but she gasps from the force.
"What the hell." Louis groans from the back and I look over to Nicole to see her jaw set, her hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly.
"Kaydence, Harry, please get out of the car so I can have a word with you." Nicole says calmly and I look at her in confusion, Kadyence holding the same expression.
"Why? Nicole what the-," Kaydence starts but Nicole turns around in her seat, her eyes hard and stern.
"Get, out. Now."
Kaydence hesitates, her hand pausing on the door handle before she sighs and opens the door. I grumble in annoyance and do the same, stepping out of the car then walking around to Kaydence's side as we wait for Nicole to step out. She doesn't though but chooses to roll down her window, a look full of authority on her face that I fight the urge to roll my eyes.
"You two seriously need to talk and work out your problems."
"Okay mum." I answer sarcastically and she throws me a look filled with distaste.
"I'm serious, I'm sick of listening to you guys argue all the time and tip toeing through conversations. Just talk to each other, damn."
Kaydence crosses her arms over her chest. "I tried being civil with him."
"You are the one who got pissed first." Nicole points out and I don't hide the smile that grows on my face but Nicole just shakes her head at me.
Kaydence huffs in response and pouts, while I shove my hands in my pockets. "You can't make us talk Nicole, there's no point."
"Oh yes I can." I narrow my eyes at her, about to ask what that's supposed to mean when she moves her hand and I hear the sound of something clicking, or locking. It dawns on me what she might have done and I step around Kaydence to reach for the door handle, but just as I thought it's locked.
"Nicole, unlock the damn doors." I warn her but she shakes her head, rolling her window up halfway that way all I see are her eyes. Kay realizes what Nicole has done and reaches for the door too, trying to open it.
"What are you doing?" I hear panic in Kay's voice and she knocks her hand against the window. "Nicole unlock the doors right now."
"The gas station is about three miles away from here so, you two can walk your way there. It should give you enough time to talk everything out." I can't see Nicole's lips but from the way her eyes crease at the corners I can tell she's smiling.
"You are not leaving us stranded here! I don't do hikes Nicole!" Kaydence knocks on the window again. "Louis? Open the door please?"
"You said she was your best friend." Louis shouts from the back and Nicole laughs as she begins to roll up the window, stopping it right before it closes completely.
"Go straight down the side of the road, you'll reach the gas station eventually. We'll be waiting for you guys there, and you two better have gotten your shit together by then." She rolls the window up before either of us can respond and Kaydence smacks her hand against the window right before the wheels spin in the dirt as she takes off down the road, leaving Kaydence and I entirely alone.
