Author's Reflection
Hello lovely readers! I've read a few books where other authors wrote about their reflective thoughts on their novels after completing them. I really like the idea of giving a bit of insight into my creative process and into the creation of TSAR itself. I've chosen some general questions from a few online resources to use as a type of guiding force. I'll reword the questions a bit in order to be a little more precise. I really hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed writing it!
Question 1: Describe what you pictured in your mind about the story?
So the neighborhood was kind of based off of the neighborhood in the drama Beating Again. They live in Seoul, but it's more of a niche neighborhood. I wanted a quiet, more muted scene for the chaos of their personal lives to take place.
Question 2: Which character can you connect with the most in your book? Why?
I connected the most with Hana, but also with Jin Myung. Hana has dealt with a lot and has been hurt deeply, but she also finds healing and tries to help others. That resonates with me. Jin Myung care for her friend also resonates with me.
Question 3: Which part of the book did you have the most difficulty connecting with? Why do you think that was?
I mean I've never had like a legit boyfriend so, I don't know what that's like.
Question 4: What aspects of the character's experiences have you experienced?
Hana's anxiety, some of her past experiences, dealing with a loved one's pain and substance abuse, and trying to help others find healing.
Question 5: What parts were the easiest to write? Which parts were the most difficult to write?
The easiest parts to write were the relationships between Hana/Jin Myung and Hoseok/Hana. Writing about Hana's pain was both easy and hard. It was easy because I can understand her. It was hard because it was an intensely emotional process. Writing about Hoseok's alcoholism was hard because of the emotional weight it carries over some of those I love.
Question 6: What was your intent in writing this book? Why did you write the characters or setting in the way that you did?
I wanted to show strength, healing, love, friendship, and understanding. It's important to me that I show a meaningful theme in what I write. I wanted to show that healing can occur personally and in relationships. I've experienced this, and so have others. This message is important to me and I want others to believe it too. I wrote my characters as realistically as I could so that I could write them into real life.
Question 7: Did you discover anything about yourself in the process of writing this book?
Yes. I have definitely realized through this how much I channel my own life experiences into my stories.
Question 8: What kind of research did you have to do for this book? What kind of processes did you go through in order to get the book fully developed? What kind of literary devices did you try to use?
I did minimum research on this book, and that might show a little. Basically, I used what I already know about pop culture and basic psychology. There wasn't a huge need for extensive research, but I do recommend that you have a good understanding of what you're writing about.
My process for this particular book was kind of chaotic. I wrote it first in an insert name fashion with little development. As I wrote I began to feel like I needed to change my technique. I didn't feel as if I could write such sensitive material in the insert name fashion. I took a break from the finished manuscript before I decided to rewrite once again. I changed the book to an AU where Hoseok worked as an international aid worker. I've done plot summaries, character sheets, and peer editing. I did these things to make the story the best it could be.
As far as literary elements, I did try to use some. I work hard on my imagery, trying to give you colorful scenes. Characterization was another big part of the story. I felt like I knew my characters, and I wanted my readers to know as well.
Question 9: Now that I've written this book, I'd like to learn more about...
I've been interested in Psychology for years, it's actually the field I've chosen to go in. Based on my own experiences and on those I love, I really do want to continue studying psychology, specifically the effects of trauma. Psychology is an underlying part of this book, and so this book was a type of outlet to go over what I already know.
Question 10: Who would you like to thank in the writing of this book? Is there anything you'd like to say to your supporters?
There are a few special people I want to thank. So firstly, my two besties, @chaelattae and @mak19. Each of them loves TSAR and have supported me with encouragement and advice throughout my process. Thanks, babes!
Also, my sister doesn't read fanfic but when I was first writing this, she did let me read the first manuscript aloud. She was probably cringing so much, but she suffered through.
Also, thank you lovely readers! I loved writing this book but it was also a difficult and emotional process. The support given helped to encourage me.
If there are any more focused questions (i.e. questions about the characters' futures, pasts, etc.) you lovely readers would like answered, feel free to comment on them. As time allows, I'll try to answer them on my notifications board.
Again, thank you so much for all of the support! I hope you thoroughly enjoyed Through Sunshine and Rain as much as I did. I hope you learned something about strength, healing, love, friendship, understanding, or anything that would make you a better person overall.
I'm currently writing a Min Yoongi Fanfiction called Liar as well as a fluff and one-shots book. I have a Poetry book you might check out as well.
Thank you, and until next time, please take care of yourselves and eat well!
