iii. introductions
As the ship shot forward into space, Breha and the girl worked together to make sure the ship was actually ready to fly on its own. They would need to have a formal discussion on where they wanted to go exactly, so there was no need to program the navicomputer and the hyperdrive, but Breha was still sure to get it ready, should they need to go anywhere in a hurry.
The other girl stood up from the pilot's seat at the same time that Breha turned away from the navicomputer. She reached out and caught the girl's arm before she could exit the cockpit. When she was given a questioning look, Breha simply pulled her into a hug, holding her for a moment as she went completely still.
"Thank you for not getting me killed," Breha told her after pulling back.
"You're, um, welcome..." she answered.
With a smile, they headed out of the cockpit and met up with the person Breha had to assume was the one in the gunner's position in the hallway that led to both places. He had dark skin and similarly dark eyes with closely cropped black hair and a smile that made Breha's heart skip a beat. They were all talking over each other in an instant.
"Nice shooting."
"Now that was some flying."
"Thanks."
"How did you do that?"
"I don't know."
"No one trained you?"
"I've flown some ships, but I've never left the planet. Your last shot was dead on."
"That was amazing."
"You were both amazing!" Breha exclaimed, unable to contain herself.
He turned to her, as if seeing her for the first time. "Who are you?"
"I could ask you the same thing! But you just practically saved my skin, so I'm not all that worried just yet," Breha said with a laugh.
From behind them, BB-8 chriped inquisitively, getting all of their attention and stopping their conversation in it's tracks. The girl turned and knelt down in front of the small droid while Breha and the boy who's name she still didn't know remained standing.
"You're okay," she told the droid, "they're with the Resistance. They're gonna get you home. We all will."
Breha couldn't help a smile at hearing her reassure the droid she would help get it home again. Though she understood the lingering reasons some people still held grudges against droids, Breha had always treated them with kindness. It had never really been an option in her family, to treat droids like lesser beings.
"I don't know your names," the girl said once she was standing and facing them again.
"Finn," he answered, "what's yours?"
"I'm Rey."
"Aldera," Breha answered.
"Your parents named you after one of the moons of Alderaan?" Finn asked, looking confused.
Breha laughed. "No, I chose it. It's my codename. Cause I'm with the Resistance."
"Oh, right," he said. He paused for a moment, looking like he was debating about something internally. Finally, he took a deep breath, "Rey, Aldera—"
A pipe burst from under the floor in the room the hallway they were led into, effectively cutting off whatever it was that Finn was going to tell them. Both Breha and Rey hurried over, immediately reaching down and pulling the grate out of the way so they could get at the problem.
"Whoa, what's going on?" Finn asked as they moved the grate.
"The pipe burst," Breha answered.
Once the grate was out of the way, Breha immediately dropped down into the opening to investigate and Rey was quick to follow her. With smoke filling the small area and making it hard to see, Breha turned her attention first to trying to clear it away so they could actually see where they were working.
After just using her hands proved not as effective as she wanted, Breha turned and pushed herself up out of the hole halfway, leaning across the floor to grab a piece of scrap that was lying around within reach. Once she was back below, the piece of scrap was much more effective at clearing the smoke. With a clear view, Rey was able to quickly identify the problem and popped back up to tell Finn what it was.
"It's the motivator," Rey said.
"There's a box of tools over there," Breha told Finn as she popped back up as well, pointing to the box. "This motivator has always been an issue," she muttered to herself, remembering stories she'd heard from her parents and family.
"Grab me a Harris wrench," Rey instructed Finn before turning to Breha. "Did you say something?"
"Oh, no, just mumbling to myself," she answered.
"How bad is it?" Finn asked.
"If we wanna live, not good," Rey answered.
"They're hunting for us now," Finn said, "We've gotta get out of this system."
That much was true, Breha thought to herself as she ducked down and kept batting away the smoke. The First Order was not exactly known for regularly letting people get away. They would need to fix the motivator. Breha felt lucky that Rey seemed to know what she was doing because although she'd grown up on this ship, she'd never been a mechanic, that was her dad. Just because some of her fondest memories of spending time with him was fixing the ship, it didn't mean she'd been paying enough attention to do more than just hold the torch.
"BB-8 said the location of the Resistance base is need to know, if I'm taking you there, I need to know!" Rey said, popping up to grab the wrench from Finn.
"Can you fix this?" Breha asked her when she was once more below the floor.
"Yes, if all the correct tools are on board," Rey answered.
"Okay, good, good," Breha said nodding to herself. The Resistance really needed this ship.
Rey popped up again. "Pilex driver, hurry. So where's your base?"
"Go on, BB-8, tell her," Finn said and Breha stood too, narrowing her eyes at Finn.
BB-8 looked back and forth between Rey and Finn rapidly, before pausing for a second on Finn and looking back to Rey and giving several beeps, telling her the location of the base.
"The Ileenium system?" Rey asked.
"Yeah, the Ileenium system, that's the one. Get us there as fast as you can," Finn said, tossing the tool to Rey as she quickly ducked back down again.
Once Rey was out of sight, Finn gave BB-8 a thumbs up and the droid responded with flashing a small blue flame. Breha guessed that he was either doing his best to mimic Finn or threatening him. She didn't know which option was funnier.
With the problem with the motivator fixed enough that the smoke had abated, Breha pushed herself up so she was sitting cross-legged at the edge of the opening so she was out of Rey's way as she continued fixing the problem. Regardless of how funny it was that her favourite droid may have been threatening Finn, Breha couldn't help but wonder why the whole interaction was necessary. What reason would Finn have to give the droid a thumb's up?
"I'll drop you three at Ponemah Terminal," Rey said. "I need the bonding tape, hurry!"
"What about you?" Finn asked.
"I've got to get back to Jakku," Rey said.
"Back to Jak—" Finn said, clearly a little angry. "Why does everyone wanna go back to Jakku?"
"I never want to go back there if I can help it if that makes you feel any better, Finn," Breha told him.
"It does actually, a little bit," Finn admitted, his expression softening as he held something in his hand.
"It's not that one," Rey said and Finn dropped the object to pick up something Rey was pointing to. "No, no. The one I'm pointing to. No. No. No! If we don't patch this up, the propulsion tank will overflow and flood the ship with poisonous gas!"
Rolling her eyes, Breha stretched out her hand, identifying what it was that Rey was asking for and slowly managed to lift the tape into Finn's hand. Instead of going to fix the issue, both of them just stared at Breha like they had totally forgotten about the poisonous gas.
"Poisonous gas?" she reminded them. "You can ask me all about it when we aren't in danger of slowly suffocating!"
That seemed to get them both moving again as Finn tossed the tape that Rey had asked for to her and she disappeared below again, quickly using it to patch up where the gas was coming from. As she worked, Finn crawled over and looked down at Rey.
"Hey, Rey, you're a pilot. You can fly anywhere. Why go back?" he asked her. "You got a family?"
"None of your business, that's why," Rey answered.
Finn's eyes slowly turned up to Breha and she had to fight down a smirk, knowing what he was about to ask her.
"I have a family, yes, if that was your question. And before you ask your next question, no, I do not have a boyfriend. Just some overprotective family and friends," she said, finally unable to fight off her smirk as he got flustered.
"I— I wasn't going to—"
"Yes, you were," Breha said.
Before he could argue or anyone could say anything else, really, all the power in the ship suddenly cut off and the emergency lights came on, bathing them all in dull red light. The sudden silence of the ships shutting off was almost louder than the engines had been.
"That can't be good," Finn said.
"No, it can't be," Rey agreed.
"This is definitely bad," Breha agreed.
