The sneak attack.
From all the poems written on the subject of unrequited love, There are so few on the pain of being the object of that affection. The truth is, Hayley, It's not love on which the strongest foundations are built. It's the decency of merciful lies. -Niklaus mikaelson
The cold breeze hitting her face blinded her. She tried her best to overcome it, she hid her face behind her hands. The fur coat she was wearing wasn't any help in keeping her warm as she felt like she was freezing alive.
She then felt her hands going numb as the snow started to reach her knees. She tried to escape it, but it was too deep. She then took a deep breath as she used her left hand to cover her face. Her right hand went to her knees, there was a pocket located right above it, but it was secured with a digital lock.
The cold became worse. She couldn't breathe, but she had to unlock the pocket. Her hand searched around the pocket for any buttons or symbols, then she felt a small button located right above it. She managed to press it and a blue hologram swiftly appeared in front of her. She could feel it, the warmth radiation from the hologram. She removed her left hand from her face, wanting to look at what the hologram said.
She was about to see it when a door slammed open and a woman with brown messy hair in simple jeans and a top pressed the light button on again.
The girl in the coat groaned as the fake holographic snow disappeared with the wind makers and air coolers, revealing the simple room that was actually there. The girl was standing on her bed with a cardboard sword in her hand, the carpet looked as if nothing had ever happened on it. She removed the fake coat as she turned to look at the woman who had barged in suddenly.
"I almost finished! You can't do this every time I'm faking a battle, Mary," Jessica whined as she removed her sound sensor headphones and moved the strands of her brown hair from her eyes.
"I'll stop barging in on your holo battles when you start winning them in the given time. And we've gone over this before, you're not a kid anymore. When will you start using actual swords?" Mary walked towards her with a sympathetic face.
"Mare, we've gone over this before. Daggers are my thing, swords and ripping hearts out is yours. Now leave! I have a call with...Susan! Yeah her. I promised to meet her in town today," Jessica almost told the truth. She hesitated before saying Susan, as If she was lying.
"Oh is that so, jay? And is this the same Susan who was in your room last month?" Mary questioned with a smirk as she sat on the edge of the bed. The girl sat down beside her, leaving the cardboard sword in the middle of the bed.
"Jay, you know that you can't risk being spotted. The last time I let you out with that blonde friend of yours, your leg had to face the consequences," Mary explained as she pointed towards a bruise on her left leg, it was right above her knee.
"I know, but it's not Susan this time. She's someone very important to me and I just feel so bored over here all the time. Please?" Jessica put her hands together and pleaded. She widened her eyes and tried to use her eyes to her advantage.
Mary gave out a small chuckle as she sighed. She stood up as she gave out a deep breath and faced Jessica.
"Only today and because I'm meeting Elliott again. Be careful though, we really can't risk any exposure. And I'm going to need your little girlfriend's blood sample just to be sure," Mary told Jessica, Jessica face lit up with a small smile.
"Now, come downstairs for lunch. Oh and please, make use of your nebulizer if needed. You do remember how to use one right?" Mary questioned her as she went towards the door and opened it. She then leaned against it with her arms crossed.
"Mare, I'm not five. I know how to use a nebulizer. It's just stabbing someone in the neck with it and letting the parasite inside it devour the person's memory. Or it can surrounded his neck and well, kill him," Jessica answered as she got up again. Her hands reaching for a cabinet by her bed.
She opened the door and then removed a pen like looking object from it. She then turned towards Mary and pressed a stripe on the object she was holding.
She threw it towards Mary and Mary caught it immediately. Mary gave out a huff as the object in her hands started to give out a blue glow. It was the nebulizer. It had a white body with small bits of it carved out that let out blue light. The top to it was rubber like, it was smooth unlike the rest of its body. Mary held it in her right hand, showing it off to Jessica. Then she pressed the same stripe on it again to turn it off.
"Don't hesitate to use it. Jay, something you have to know and remember is that the moment you hesitate is the moment you tell your enemies that you are weak. I hope that there won't be a single day where you'll even have to use it but what I hope can't always be what happens," Mary told Jessica as she took a deep breath.
"You don't need to lecture me about it. I'm learning about everything from seventeen years, from when I was a babe. I'm sure I'm more than capable to handle a fight," Jessica answered back as she walked past the door.
Mary gave out a small sigh as she walked out with Jessica. She closed the door behind her and followed Jessica down the grand staircase.
As they were walking down the staircase, another topic of discussion came up. The candlelit hallways had something special about them, the torn paintings hung up on their walls gave the mansion a different feel of its own.
At first glance, the mansion looked like any other old house. Wooden, broken windows, cobwebs found in corners. But, it couldn't be more different when examined. Traps where laid out everywhere. The carpets found in every room had a edge of poison to them, the old tapestry hid small weapons and the invisible force field outside wouldn't allow anyone but the people with access to the mansion inside.
"Mary, I'll be fine. I am almost seventeen. I can handle being alone for some hours," Jessica put her hair in a ponytail as they walked through the hallways.
"I'll be gone for exactly three hours. If you are going to the eastern town then take some fruits with you. Give them to your friend or trade it for something you want," Mary answered truthfully. She knew that it was better that Jessica got to have friends and enjoy the little things, rather then being locked up and hating herself.
They entered the dining room. It like the rest of the mansion was lit up by candles of all sorts. The dining table in the center of the room was of rosewood, a type of wood that can no longer be found. For some reason, the dining table had twelve seats. What was odd about it was that Jessica and mary were the only ones that had ever set foot in the mansion. They sat down and had a quite lunch and soon after, mary was about to leave.
"be back soon, I love you." said Jessica as Mary messed up her hair. Mary pulled away from the hug, took her bag and went outside. She did the standard procedure and just like that she was gone.
Jessica was alone. She didn't mind being alone, but what she did mind was being bored. She looked around the room, and then after realizing that there was nothing to do she just gave up and decided to head to the roof. If she wasn't doing anything then she would rather go enjoy the sunset then sit empty handed.
As Jessica started climbing up the stairs she noticed that she was in the air, Floating. Only difference being that she wasn't doing it this time.
"Missed me, Love?" said a voice that came from behind Jessica.
There was a beautiful blonde standing behind her who was making Jessica float "Oh curse you! Put me down this instance. Good aim though" said Jessica as she turned to look at the blonde and laughed.
"I missed you Diana," Jessica replied as the blonde named Diana stopped Making Jessica float.
"I missed you as well," Said Diana as she went and hugged Jessica.
"What are you doing here? And when did you learn to do that?" asked Jessica, She knew that Diana possessed unique powers but also knew that Diana wasn't very good at control
"Can't a person just meet their girlfriend for no reason? And I learnt it by myself of course," replied Diana but it wasn't the truth and Jessica knew it.
"Diana, where did you learn it?" asked Jessica again. Looking suspicious.
" Fine, I learned it by bribing one of the guards at Eleanor's third palace, but I made sure that he wouldn't tell," Diana said to Jessica as she looked at her.
Jessica looked at Diana as she sighed and said "It could have been dangerous, What if he tried to hurt you or kill you?"
"If I had died over there then my last thought would have been how much I can't live without you, And you know it," Said Diana as Jessica went up to the balcony.
Diana helped Jessica to walk up the stairs to the balcony where they both pulled out chairs from the back and sat down facing the balcony. Jessica looked at the forests that surrounded the mansion.
" I am leaving" said Diana as she held Jessica's hand and looked at her.
"I couldn't be without you, I'd leave with you if you left," said Jessica as she looked at Diana.
"I am not joking, I've trained enough and if we were to run away then I'd be prepared for it," Jessica answered, while still looking at Diana.
"You can't do that, I am leaving and I thought it was important that I at least told you about it before hand-" Diana was talking as she got cut off by Jessica
"–Do you think I don't know!? I am worried always about you and how you might leave at any moment, You already only see me once a month, twice if we are lucky, How many times would we get to see each other if you left?" Jessica said as she looked at Diana stand up in a fraction of a second.
"Then we'd see each other once in two months, twice if we are lucky, but we'll make it work," Said Diana in the calmest voice possible as she went towards Jessica.
"Look at me, I am not someone that deserves or you, But somehow you believe still believe in me, and I love you for that but I am leaving tonight, leaving as in not just skipping town, Lelaving as in leaving the state, And that's because I want to find out the origin of your powers, our powers." Said Diana as she held Jessica's hand.
"Well I can't say anything can I? You'll paint me out to be the obvious bad one who holds you back," Jessica replied impulsively. She couldn't believe that she actually wanted Diana to stay because that sounded selfish and Jessica didn't want to be selfish. She looked into Diana's eyes, Hoping that maybe Diana would understand why Jessica didn't want her to leave.
"Jessica did you even hear what I had said? I am politely telling you that I am leaving, I am not asking you anything," Diana said to Jessica as she tucked her hair behind her ear.
"Well I am asking you to stay, Please. It won't be the same with you gone, How would it work?" Jessica asked Diana with desperateness in her voice. Jessica touched Diana's face, Just hoping that this one time Diana would listen and maybe consider staying.
"I can't. I have to go but I promise you that we'll meet soon, and it will be the best moments of our lives," Diana added as she went closer to Jessica. Diana put her hand on Jessica's shoulder as she tried to make Jessica understand.
Jessica then kissed her, It wasn't a impulsive or a passionate kiss but one that Jessica didn't want to pull away from. She wanted them to be frozen in time at the moment when they were happy. Diana kissed her back, pulling Jessica closer and then Diana pulled away. They didn't speak anything, Jessica nodded and hugged Diana but then Diana left after helping Jessica get down the balcony and Jessica sat against the wooden table.
Thinking about how she would never actually find someone that would stay. Jessica loved Diana but she really didn't want to always be waiting for Diana and never be able to enjoy the moment with her because at the end of the day she knew that Diana would leave and Jessica would be left behind.
She still got up after some time and headed to the throwing station, A part of the training grounds. She took a pair of throwing knives and started practicing again, all she wanted now was to go back in time and stop herself from falling for Diana..
But then she saw what a great opportunity she got, she thought that she would climb out of the mansion then go under the force field and go check out the town again. She hadn't been there since months so she decided to go. Maybe it was for the best, maybe them seeing each other rarely would be enough for her. She wouldn't know until the next month though so a distraction looked like something that she'd enjoy.
Jessica went back upstairs, She went towards the balcony, The only section that had not been scanned. Mary had taught Jessica how to climb down buildings in the from the balcony and Jessica quite liked a good thrill. She put a hook to the edge of the balcony, Tied the rope to herself and started climbing down with the rope and knives.
Soon enough she reached the bottom and made her way to the end of the force field, She removed a pile of leaves and rubble from the ground to get into the secret exit. From then onwards she made her way to the town.
It was buzzing with the smells of freshly made dishes and the lights made everything look better. She was thinking of why today out of all the days was the town so bright, then she remembered about a person from the eighth colony who was coming over here to do a show. She thought that she would watch a bit of the show and leave so she got the tickets by trading a bracelet of hers and went towards where the show was taking place.
She looked around for Susan, Her friend but there was no sign of her. In the midst of the lanterns and the flowers and the warm feeling of the town she felt that something wasn't right but she ignored it. She just thought that it could be hunger. As she was about to head to the ticket counter, she felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned around to see someone she thought she had missed.
"Where do you think you're going?" she heard a excited voice asking her the question. A small smile appeared on her face as she saw Susan enjoying the town that day.
Susan was in her normal attire. Her long curly red hair was left open but decorated with flowers and her clothes were dirty from spending all the time in the bakery but they were presentable.
"Only to buy us two tickets to the show. I thought we had an agreement that you wouldn't scare me like that," Jessica answered with a grin as she showed Susan her bracelet.
"Jess, you know I can't afford to owe you anything. You can go, I'll be waiting over here," Susan told her honestly. Her green eyes looked into Jessica's eyes, trying to make her understand.
Susan's family, like many others, were poor. They barely had enough to put food on the table even with four out of five people in the family working. But Susan was optimistic, she dreamed of the day she would travel the world without worrying about her family.
"I heard that he was putting on a show about all three of the countries, this might be your only chance at seeing them. Do you really want to miss it?" Jessica tried to convince her. She wouldn't watch the show on her own.
Susan sighed and looked at Jessica in defeat. She knew that she probably would never even leave volldar so that might be her only chance at seeing how different the other countries may be.
"Fine but first let me go back to the bakery and get some fresh bread. That's the least I can do for you," Susan didn't want to owe anyone anything. Jessica gave a nod and Susan turned back and started to quickly walk the other way to the bakery.
Jessica looked at the people over there. They looked happy. they were waiting for the guy from the eight colony to start the show. There were people with they're families, there were some who went alone but for some time over there it looked as if everyone was the same.
Jessica waited patiently for him to do something but he froze there. He looked like he was struck with a lot of fear and his face started looking pale. Jessica turned around to see what he saw that scared him, It was an old woman.
The old woman had walked by one of the guards without paying her respects. It was a sort of rule to pay the guards with something if you walk by them, If you don't then a public execution would be arranged. Jessica didn't want to see that, That wasn't fair. Nothing was but she'd rather adjust to the rules then be the rebel who'd get herself killed.
Jessica decided to head out, to get out of the town and walk around the forest for some time. She hoped that no one saw her and she tried to walk past the huge crowd when the woman started to scream.
Jessica walked by faster but somehow the crowd started becoming bigger and bigger when suddenly she felt as if all the energy from her was getting drained, She collapsed to the ground and lost her consciousness.
A girl that was standing beside her wearing a raven colored hoodie, With black hair and brown eyes, pressed something to her ear and said "Caroline, We found her. Protocol energy successful." Said the girl as she saw a guy heading towards them, the guy helped the girl carry Jessica as the girl with the hoodie made sure that everyone who saw her was compelled to forget her.
The whole area went black, At least in Jessica's eyes. It felt as if the lights had been blown out and the wind made it feel like they were in December in the midst of summer. People ran, then calmed down and before they knew it they had forgotten about everything that had happened from an hour. The town's bright and worn colors now we're a shade of blue and black and it felt like it was snowing. Eleanor had found out about what had happened over there, It had begun.
Volldar had something special about it though, it had a way with the people. When they were happy, the town felt warm and enjoyable. When they felt blue, so did the town. Maybe what the queen said was right, the people are what make volldar a place.
