The coldest night. [ 1]
The coldest night
Family is power, Niklaus. Love, loyalty, it's power. This is what we swore to each other a thousand years ago before life tore away what little humanity you had left. Before ego, before anger, before paranoia created in this person before me, someone I can barely even recognize as my own brother...This is us. The Original family. We remain together, always and forever – Elijah mikaelson
A woman in her 20's, dressed in a light blue torn dress ran through a forest whilst carrying a baby in a wooden basket. It was almost midnight and she could sense something bad was about to happen.
With every step she took, she feared for her life. The little sounds of leaves crumbling below her feet and the cold breeze hitting her were once the sounds that she found calming, but now they felt like daggers to her spine. A shot of pain went up to her leg as she kept on running as fast as she could. The dark night sky used to be filled with the brightest of stars but now all that was visible was the Crescent moon that acted as a light source.
The tree's towering over her made her feel even more anxious. The forest seemed endless by the number of tall trees surrounding it. She could swear that she heard whispers with the breeze. The Crescent moon usually didn't give out too much light but now it highlighted everything, from the dark green leaves of the trees to the wet mud filled grass.
Mud. That indicated water. She continued running, searching for that river or stream. She felt the ground get more slippery as she saw it. The lustering stream. The woman left out a deep breath she didn't even know she was holding as she looked at the basket she had. She knew that she didn't have any time to spare but she wasn't going to simply let the child go without once touching it.
She stroked the baby's cheek as she took a sharp breath. It was wrapped around two towels and was asleep with its mouth open. The woman came out of her small trance as she removed one towel off the child and then removed her necklace. Her necklace looked one of a kind, probably the only one of it's kind. It was made of silver and diamond and looked light enough to not affect the baby. She put the necklace in the basket and then walked towards the flowing stream. She placed the baby on the stream, watching the waters take away the woman's only hope.
She knew what she was going to do. She shook her hands as she shook her head, preparing for something reckless. She bent down and collected the weeds and stones growing by the stream and filled the towel with them. She tied the towel and then held it in her arms like it was the child. She then turned to the direction of the dark forest, ready to run. She ran into the forest in the same, almost faster speed then she ran out of it and before she understood what was happening, she found them.
Before she knew it, she was surrounded by huge creatures who looked like they were made of stone and glass. Their eyes were the color of blood and they were taller than the tallest of trees that she could see. The earth under her began shaking and the winds blew the fastest they could. She felt her body slowly turn to pure stone causing her to drop the cloth filled with rocks.
But with her last breath, she had managed to give a smile. Knowing that she had succeeded in making sure the baby lived, and that was all that mattered to her.
The wooden basket with the baby had flown to the end of the forest, where stood a woman with dark brown hair and eyes darker than the darkest of nights. The forest that was once darkest it had been now looked warm and had a good feeling to it. The sunlight was reflecting off almost everything, including the very old red Maserati that was parked nearby.
As soon as she saw the baby and the necklace next to it she knew that they had to get somewhere safe. The woman wasn't alone over there though. there stood a man beside her, with brown hair, blue eyes.
"It's time Elliott," The woman told the man standing next to her as she picked up the baby.
"We'll all miss you, Mary. Especially Ezra. Unfortunately, he and Alex couldn't be here," Elliot replied as he took a deep breath.
"You didn't have to be here El, I'm fine," Mary lied as she looked at the baby.
"Well even if you were fine I would still be here. And you're taking my car forever so I deserve a goodbye," Elliott tried to lighten the mood as he played with his hair.
"You mean my car right? Oh well, at least it's almost as old as you. It was made what? 700 Maybe 600 years ago?" Mary replied back as she walked towards the car and opened the door.
"Take the far sided highway, drive onto the winter town's road and then straight for an hour. You'll reach the eastern town then and from there you'll have to use the hidden roads to the forest. There's a force field outside the mansion, it's connected to your strip. Everything else Is of your design. Take care of her and yourself mare," He added to the conversation to which Mary replied with a quick nod. She kept the basket with the baby on the passenger seat as she closed the door. She then walked back towards Elliott, reaching for a quick hug.
She hugged him. It was a quick but meaningful hug as Elliott gave a nod. She was about to pull away.
"Invite me to the wedding," She whispered and chuckled as she pulled away.
"When he says yes to finally marrying me, I will," He told her with a grin. He put his arms the pockets of his green coat as Mary gave a small smile and walked to the car, this time to leave.
She drove onto the door, hoping that she would be able to keep the baby safe while a part of her just wished that she could go back in time. She drove for a whole day before finally reaching the eastern forest and it took her an additional hour to reach the mansion.
The mansion looked like it wasn't from their era. From the outside, it looked like a rich person mansion, Vintage.
The force field covering it was invisible, just the way Mary intended it to be. The mansion was made of wood and various stones. The windows were covered with vines and some even looked shattered, as if no one had entered in ages. There were some writings carved onto the stones in languages even Mary didn't know of.
It didn't look all filled with the technology that's used by the Queen's people to track others down. It was very big, almost like a castle. As she approached it she remembered about the force field.
She clicked a button on her coat and a wrist band covered her wrist as the force field opened up and as she got inside it closed once again as the wrist band disappeared.
The inside of the mansion was better than she had expected, The first room was covered in booby traps that she herself had made and as she went on the inside she noticed that this location was sealed off from the outside. It truly was the best place for the baby. The whole interior of the mansion was vintage, there were some paintings hanging on the walls, some tapestry laid out. There was a carpet on the floor in the living room as well.

"Well, Here's your home. I am going to stay with you and oh god I am horrible at this," Said Mary as she held the baby "But we'll figure it out. So, What should we call you? We can't give you a number...The necklace," Mary put the baby on the wooden table that was in the dead center of the living room as she took the necklace.
She put the necklace on the baby as it was still sleeping.
"Its made of jade and diamond isn't it, Knew it that your mother wouldn't have left you without it. We'll decide your name afterward But for now I'll call you Jay." Said Mary as she took the baby and left the living room to go further into the mansion.
Mary took the baby out of the basket and put it in a cradle that looked classy but comfortable.
"Man that's luxury, when I was a babe I had to sleep on grass goddammit," Said Mary as she smiled and looked at the baby.
"I know that you are still a little kid and I don't know how you managed to survive the night but what I do know is that once we start preparing you to fight, You'll be the most powerful Little thing over here," Mary continued. She wanted her to be safe and she knew that she'd be safe over here, Hidden away from the outside.
"You have your mom's eyes. Consider yourself a lucky baby, You'll be safe here." Mary said as she now sat up against the bed.
"Maybe I should have brought your mother here, we should have kept her safe, We didn't. Maybe if we did you'd still have her," She said as she closed her eyes and put her hands in her hair out of frustration.
She stood back up again, To see if the baby was still sleeping but it wasn't, It looked as if it was listening to Mary as she talked to herself, The baby's eyes were wide open and it looked like it was smiling.
"You've won me over jay, you can go back to sleep," Mary said as she looked over the baby once again and left but almost instantly the baby started crying.
"Fine you stubborn little thing, You can come with me." She said as she carried the baby with her to the cooking area that was located right above the living room.
"When do you think is the appropriate age for you to start learning the basics of knives? I know we should start tomorrow. Look at me being overprotective," Said Mary as she walked up the stairs with the baby.
The stairs, The living room, The whole Mansion just didn't look like it was from their era. There wasn't any holographic technology or any type of electronic scanners. It looked like it was made ages ago.
She put the baby on the counter as she opened a drawer that was filled with pre made baby food no way in Eleanor's shoe that I would let you eat that pre-made goo, I can't have you looking like a pale skinned frog can I?" Said Mary as she closed the draw and looked around for the vegetable closet, But the baby looked like it had already found it for her because it was raising it's hand at a black cabinet.
"Fine you won this round but it's on from tomorrow jay." Said Mary as she opened the black cabinet and took out some vegetables to wash them.
She put the vegetables in a pot and as she went to take soap she saw that the baby wasn't there. "Jay, Where are you? Come back now!," Mary Said as she was both surprised and ready to kill whoever took it, But as she took a knife from behind she saw the baby......Floating with the knife that was in the cabinet.
"You're not old enough to practice with knives yet little fellow, get down right this moment and give me the knife she said as she started to climb the counter to grab the baby. Mary caught the baby and looked at it as she high fived it.
"But you are old enough to know how to use knives, Guess we found a loophole then." Mary told her with a sigh. She was expecting it, She knew beforehand and that Jay was the farthest thing from normal so why treat her like she's normal.
"You'll fit right in over here, And if you tell anyone that I let you hold a knife on your first day then please also tell them that you're the daughter of the person that single handedly managed to of Eleanor," She said to the baby.
"But right now, You need to stop floating and get some sleep. Come on, We're going back upstairs." Said Mary as she finally took the newborn and went back upstairs.
It really was the coldest night, because they were the ones that lead to the brightest days.
