Chapter 8

Kate watched from afar as her brother interacted with the vampires in the room. Antonio never had any social experience with vampires other than his family, so it was surprising to witness how well he was handling it.

There hadn't been any mishaps since the incident with Amun, but some were still hesitant around the young boy.

Not many knew how young the boy truly was, but his looks and personality held a certain youthfulness to it that made them curious. It gained their attention, and they found it hard to turn away.

They were currently in the living room, some of them watching a game on the television as others quietly talked to themselves.

Antonio was sat on the couch, Rosalie and Emmett to his left as Garrett sat facing Antonio on the footrest between the couches.

No one except Kate seemed to notice, but Antonio had left space between himself and all of them, choosing to sit as close to the edge of the couch as he could.

She knew why. His gift was more prominent than they thought it would be. He could stop focusing for one second while touching someone and end up burning them. The gift itself didn't seem to bother him as much as it did before, but she could tell that he wasn't telling them everything he knew.

Edward wasn't much help in the matter, too occupied with Renesmee and his newborn wife. When he was around, he never read into Antonio's thoughts as it felt more immoral than normal when it came to reading the boy.

The way he described it, Antonio's mind was innocent. But even still, his mind was heavily guarded. Unlike most people, Antonio could feel the shift that happened whenever Edward entered his thoughts. Naturally, he hated every bit of it. It felt violating. It was violating. It shook him up to his core and he almost burned Edward for doing it. Edward learned pretty quickly to leave Antonio's mind alone.

He knew a bit more about the boy from the thoughts of his family, but their thoughts never went too in-depth about how his vampire existence came to be.

He knew that Antonio's need to breathe all the time was linked to an event with water in his human life, so he figured that he had a close call with drowning at some point.

Kate's gaze flickered between Edward and her brother, wondering if the bewildered look on his face was something to be worried about.

Antonio would suddenly shoot Edward a glare every minute or so, but his body seemed to relax as time went on.

Garrett carried on the conversation he was having with Emmett, Kate thought it was something to do with football, but she didn't pay much attention to them.

Instead, her gaze focused on her brother and the blonde woman next to him. They had moved closer to each other at some point, and Antonio was no longer sitting on the edge of the couch.

She had his forearm pulled over her lap, his palm facing up.

She had just been checking if his hands had stopped randomly twitching as they had been, but the second she touched his hand, they had both been surprised as his gift suddenly receded away.

Kate knew the reason why, but didn't voice her thoughts as she knew her brother wasn't ready to hear it.

It wasn't much of her business anyway, but she was concerned for her little brother's wellbeing.

She knew he'd figure it out when he was ready, but she couldn't help but wonder how much it'd change everything.

She remained in her spot on the other side of the room for the rest of the night, her gaze not leaving them too often after she found them holding hands.

A small smile graced her lips as Antonio smiled to himself, looking down at his and Rosalie's hands. It lifted her spirits up to realize how much he enjoyed the physical contact without the layer of clothes or gloves between it.

She soon realized that maybe, just maybe, Antonio may get to experience what he's always dreamed of having.

She was glad to note that she was truly happy for him.
