CHAPTER SEVENTEEN ━━
monsters from hell
═════ ∘◦ 👻🔦🧸.༄ ◦∘ ═════
THERE WAS A TENSE ATMOSPHERE IN THE ROOM AS THEY all gathered around a map of the building Dr. Owens had grabbed. "Look this is us, and this is the nearest exit." He explained, circling the mentioned spots with a pencil. "But even if we somehow make it there, there's no way out."
"What do you mean?" Jim asked rushed, still scared of losing Milo once again.
"The locks are fail secure." Owens replied, turning away from the blueprints and towards Jim.
"Fail secure?" Joyce furrowed her brows giving the greying man a strange look from behind Hopper.
"If there's a power outage, the building goes on lockdown." Owens tried to explain it as simple as possible.
"Can it be unlocked remotely?" Bob wondered.
"With a computer, sure, but somebody gotta reset the breakers." Owens sighed, he too, seemed desperate to get out of the building, but the monsters crawling around made it damn near impossible.
"Where are the breakers?" Jim asked, looking back at Owens who turned back to the blueprints.
"Breakers are in the basement, three floors down." He stated, pointing at the map on the table.
Jim wasted no time as he snatched the blueprints from the table and rushed to the doors in a desperate manner.
"Hey, where are you going?" Bob called after him, stopping the man in his tracks.
"To reset the breakers." He grumbled, annoyed looking over his shoulder at the shorter man.
"Okay, then what?" Bob frowned unsure, as he stopped Jim from walking outside the room.
"Then I'll find Milo, and then we get the hell out of here." He told Bob fiercely, he would not leave his boy again. Not now, not ever.
"No then the power comes back on. If you wanna unlock the doors you have to reboot the computer system." Bob shook his head, his voice firm and stubborn. "And then override the security codes with a manual input."
Jim blinked, eager to get out and find his son he asked, "Fine how do I do that?"
"You can't." He stated, "not unles you know BASIC."
"I don't know what that means." Jim breathed out frustrated, the nerves in his gut intestifying by the second.
"It's a computer programming language." Mike spoke up from beside Joyce.
"Teach it to me."
"Shall I teach you french while I'm at, Jim?" Bob scoffed, and rolled his eyes. "How about a little german?" He mocked before looking over his shoulder at Owens. "How about you doc? Do you speak BASIC?"
Owens opened his mouth to say something, before changing his mind and he dropped his arms in defeat. "No."
"Okay, okay I got this." Bob turned back to Jim, a determined look on his while Jim looked less impressed by his words. "I got this."
"No Bob." Joyce mumbled, stepping forward with tears brimming in her eyes.
"It's okay." He whispered as Joyce threw her arms around his neck in a tight embrace.
"It's gonna be okay. Remember, Bob Newby, superhero." He gave Joyce a reasuring smile and she chuckled softly.
Within minutes, a plan was set in motion as Jim grabbed one of the death guards outside the room and hauled him inside.
Just seeing the man, ripped open, bloodied and well... death made him ache for Milo to be back here with them. He needed him to be safe.
"Okay, grab his walkie." Jim finally spoke again as Bob did what he was told and snatched it from the man's belt and the earpiece from his ear while Jim reached for the gun, ans checked it quickly.
"Alright, you know how to use one of these?" Jim asked, holding it out for Bob.
"No..." The man admitted softly, looking at the gun with wide eyes.
There was a moment of silence between the two, only the alarm still blaring in the background.
"Safety on. Safety off." Jim showed him quickly. "Point, squeeze."
"Point and squeeze, okay. Easy-peasy right." Bob panted.
"If anything happens down there, I want you to come right back up." Jim instructed seriously as he looked at the man in front of him.
"Right back here." He nodded. "Listen don't wait for me. As soon as those doors open..."
"I'm gonna get them out" Jim finished, he knew he couldn't risk the lives of all the others.
"Oh and Jim." Bob paused at the door and turned to look at him. "I don't really know who that boy is to you, but I do know he means a lot to you, especially after losing both your kids, but I promise you, whoever this teenager is, I'll make sure he gets back to you"

THERE WAS AN UNSETTLING FEELING LINGERING in the air as the young teenager's eyes were trained on the hallway ahead of him. The loud sneering sound from before had vanished in thin air, and the silence resumed once more. Yet still, Milo didn't move, he almost didn't breath as he contemplated what he should do.
Go back to where he came from? Or find the others and tell them what's going on?
The boy didn't even know which level he was on, nor did he really remember what level Will was on. He could use that same connection that helped him find Jim just yesterday, but for some reason he was scared to use it after the events of a couple hours ago.
Taking a deep breath to calm his rattled nerves, Milo took his first step forward again. And another, and another and then he was at the corner. Just before he made the final step to round it, the lights turned back on, blinding him for a moment. But he didn't waste a second this time and quickly moved forwad.
His feet carried himself, passed bodies, passed blood but then he stopped dead in his tracks, fear consuming him when he looked at the end of the hallway.
There stood a creature, crouching down, blood dripping from its mouth and a loud snarl echoing through the hallway when he spotted the boy.
His breath hitch and for just one second everything seemed frozen. And then, everything happened at once, the creature from the Upside Down came running towards him, and on pure adrenaline, Milo turned around too, running, running, running.
Smack!
No place left to go, no place to hide. Just him and the animal and a wall behind him. His breathing got ragid, his hands started to tremble uncontrolably and he waited.
Would this be the end? Would this place, this place of horrors and terrors be the place he died?
There was a loud howl, followed by some more, footsteps coming closer, and closer and closer.
And Milo closed his eyes....
