Chapter Six
"Why can't I see Maria?!" Nell stormed into her father's home office enraged.
Her father was a tall man with broad shoulders and the start of a beer gut. He had dark violet hair and blood red eyes. He looked up from the proposal he was looking at with a sigh. "Eleanor, I don't have time for one of your episodes, please leave."
"No, I want to see Maria!" Eleanor screamed, she'd tried to visit her at the hospital but she'd been turned away saying she didn't have permission.
"Eleanor, I won't tell you again." Her father slowly rose from his seat, placing his hands on his desk. He was always calm, deadly calm and he threw a look at her that said if she pressed further, she would regret it.
She didn't give a damn, her best friend was in trouble. "Tell me why!" Nell exploded in anger.
"Because she's sick!" Her father snapped.
Nell tried to bolt out of the way as he raised his voice but vines shot from the floor, one wound around her neck making breathing more difficult. "Sh-she's not sick! Something happened! She wouldn't do something like this! I have to help her!" She wasn't backing down, she didn't care about what happened to her, Maria was more important.
"Eleanor, she tried to kill herself, clearly she's ill and you don't need that kind of influence in your life, you won't be seeing her again, now drop it." The vines around her neck tightened, completely cutting off her oxygen.
She clawed at the vines when the edges of her vision began to darken and they released her. She dropped to the floor coughing and gasping for breath. Tears burned in her eyes and she ran from the room, retreating to her bedroom.
Nell moved to her desk, "fine, I'll just have to find another way in." She looked at the letter opener atop her desk. "I'm coming, Maria. Hold on, I'll help you." She drug the blade across her wrist pressing hard so it would dig deep enough to be cause for concern and not mistaken for an accident. Since she didn't have mail to open the blade was sharp from having never been used. A gasp escaped her as it tore through her flesh with ease and blood began to pool from the wound. "Hang on, Maria." Nell slipped to the ground.
A cloud of blood red rose petals fluttered into an alley before reassembling. After Natsuo left, she felt like she couldn't breathe as everything came rushing back to her. She exhaled slowly, shoved her hands into the pockets of her shredded up shorts since she'd left her denim jacket in her apartment and exited the alley trying to act like she belonged here. A few people stared at her and avoided her upon seeing all of her tattoos and piercings.
"AH! SOMEBODY HELP ME!" A scream burst from across the street, startling her.
Nell spotted a young man with unruly pale blonde hair running down the street. Two men wearing big bulky clothing that made them easily obscured from security cameras were chasing after him. No one else on the street paid any mind.
"What the hell?" Nell growled as she saw people just walking about as if this was a normal thing. She let out a sigh, "fucking hell, can I not just have a night to lose my shit in peace?!" She growled and raced after them.
The blonde darted into an alley to try and escape his pursuers. They were hot on his heels and very hard to lose. Nell heard the blonde let out a terrified scream as they must have caught up to him.
"I'm not in the mood for this shit!" She yelled as she turned down the alley causing all three men to turn to her.
"Just walk away, girlie." One of the men wearing bulky clothing scoffed at her as he held the blonde by his throat, lifting him off the ground. The blonde already had a bloody nose from whatever they'd done when they initially grabbed him.
"What the hell is this?" Nell demanded. "Why are you chasing him?"
"What's it to you?" The other guy in the bulky clothing glared, "get lost."
"Yeah... sorry, apparently I have authority issues and can't seem to keep myself out of trouble, what did he do to you?"
"Do I need a reason to want to rough someone up a bit?" The man holding the blonde asked with a snarl.
Nell shrugged, "not really but if you'd had a good enough one, I would have walked away. Since you're just an asshole, I guess I'm getting involved." She raced forward.
The unoccupied goon tried to intercept her but let out a gasp as she suddenly exploded into a cloud of rose petals that swept right past him. The petals reassembled next to the guy holding the blonde and black thorn covered vines tore from her neck and wrists and lashed out at the jerks.
The blonde dropped to the ground and stared at the intimidating girl in awe. Her thorn covered vines made quick work of the villains leaving them lying on the alley bleeding profusely. They wouldn't die, but they were sure as hell going to have a rough night.
"This day was going so well, why the fuck did you assholes have to ruin it?" She hissed angrily.
"Th-thanks." The blonde shakily got to his feet.
"Whatever." Nell walked away, stuffing her hands in her pockets once more. "Should have minded my own damn business." She grumbled under her breath. The last thing she needed was to get caught up in vigilante justice, again.
After walking for about twenty minutes, she found herself at a park and hopped over the small railing to keep people on the pristine stone walkways. She dropped into the grass and let out a soft sigh before taking in a few deep breaths to calm herself. Being around plants usually helped.
Roses began to blossom around her as she closed her eyes and tried to focus on anything other than home. Soon the roses engulfed her body, like a floral coffin.
The sound of a glass window shattering, shook her from her peaceful meditative state. "Just ignore it." She muttered to herself. Another shattering sound, much bigger than the first, caused her to poke her head out of the floral coffin. She spotted a group of people breaking the window of a nearby jewelry store. It didn't look like a fancy chain store, just a nice local business.
"Not my problem. They probably have insurance, just let it go." She grumbled and was about to lay back down when she heard the sound of someone scream from within followed by a concerning conversation.
"Boss, what do we do? Someone was sleeping in the backroom."
"I said no witnesses." The sound of a gun cocking set her nerves on edge.
"Fuck, now its my problem." Nell shoved out of the rose coffin and her body exploded into a flurry of blood colored rose petals. Her body reassembled in the middle of the jewelry store just as some of the masked thieves dragged a young woman out of a back room.
"The hell is this?!" One of the masked men jumped as Nell appeared before them.
She recognized that voice. It was the guy from her Biology lecture who'd pissed her off earlier.
"I don't give a damn, I said no witnesses."
Nell heard the gunshot and felt something tear into her abdomen. Her gaze flicked to the boy from her Biology class, "I told you, we have a high tolerance for pain and a low tolerance for bullshit, and I see a lot of bullshit." Dozens of black thorn covered vines tore from her body and lashed out at all of the masked men.
The woman they'd dragged out of the backroom let out a panicked scream and threw her arms up to protect herself before realizing none of the vines had made a move toward her. She stared at the tattooed girl in amazement once all the men fell to the ground unconscious and bleeding profusely.
"Oh my god! You're my hero!" The girl cried.
"I'm gonna pass on that title, if that's cool." Nell grimaced. "Any chance you could leave me out of whatever you tell the police when they show up?"
"Uh...sure, but why? You saved me." The woman asked her curiously.
"Because it'll be annoying." Nell pressed her hand to her abdomen and blood gushed between her fingers.
"If it was going to be annoying, why did you save me?" The woman frowned, not understanding the strange girl.
"Because, I'm sure somebody loves you and would have been devastated if you'd died." Nell headed for the door. "So, you didn't see me?"
The woman offered her a somber smile, "I saw nothing...thank you, for saving me."
Nell offered her a wave before her body exploded into rose petals leaving a small spattering of blood on the sidewalk.
