Chapter 41

As soon as the last class ended, I spot Cole waiting for me outside the classroom.

"Hey," he says with a cool tone.

"Hi," I say, walking to my locker to put back some stuff.

"So, uhm," he says as I stuff all the books, I was holding in one arm. "I just wanted to talk about what happened last week."

I shut the locker door close and start to walk away. I don't want to talk about anything right now and I don't even know why I agreed to do the project today.

"Okay, never mind then," he says when I don't respond at all. "Are we going to do it at your place or mine?" he asks.

"Yours," I say since I haven't told my mom about him coming over plus, I don't really want him to come over at all.

"Okay, cool," he says awkwardly as we walk towards his parked car.

Paula spotted us while she was busy flirting with some guy I don't know. She excuses herself from the guy and approaches us.

"Things started to stop between Kite and you just a day ago and you're already with another man?" she says and I just glared at her.

"Kite?" Cole says cluelessly.

"Don't mind her," I just tell him but I'm pretty sure that Cole would actually do otherwise.

"Is this the Akihito guy?" he asks, pronouncing his name confidently.

"It's actually pronounced as Ah-k-to," Paula reiterates as Cole blushes in embarrassment.

"Whatever, but it's that guy, isn't it?" Cole just says as Paula nods.

The guy she was flirting with approaches us and places his arm around Paula.

"Let's go," he whispers at Paula's ears and Paula just rolls her eyes.

"I better go. Bye, Amelia," Paula says before leaving with the guy.

Cole turned to look at me with disbelief and I just furrowed my eyebrows at him.

"What happened between the two of you?" he asks and I can't help but remember every single thing we've done the past week.

"Nothing," I lie, continuing to walk to his car.

"What do you mean nothing?" he says, grabbing my arm.

I didn't bother to look back at him because if I did, I know that my anger would disappear.

"Cole," I say with a firm voice, "Let. Me. Go."

He removes his grip around my arm as I turn to look at him.

"I don't think I'd like to do the project today," I finally say and he just looks at me.

"W-why?" he says, stuffing his hands into his pockets.

"I'm just not up to it," I admit, sighing.

"Okay, okay, I'm sorry. I'll no longer bug you about this Kite guy, let's just do the project," he says, trying to get me back to my mood.

"No, I don't think—"

"Please," he says, pulling me into a hug. I just stand there as he wraps his arms around my shoulders tightly, my face against his chest.

"Please, Amelia."

I pull away and swallowed.

"Fine," I say and that's when my heart leaped at the sight of his victorious face.

"Thank you!" he exclaims, grabbing my hand, and pulling me to his car.

Ash was playing Mario Kart in the living room when we arrived. After he finished one game, he turned to look at us and narrowed his eyes at me. He got up, took my hand, and led me upstairs.

"Ash, where are you bringing my guest?" Cole says, alarmed. He tried to catch up with us but Ash just sticks up his hand and told Cole to wait.

He brought me to his room and locked the door behind him.

"I need to ask you something," he says with a serious tone.

I can feel my legs tremble as I stand awkwardly inside his room.

"You may sit here," he says, gesturing to his bed.

"A-are you s-sure?" I say, sitting down on his messy bed.

"Of course, I am," he says before sitting on his desk chair.

"What were you going to ask me?" I say.

"Did you break up with my brother recently?" he says and I almost choked at his words.

"What?" I say, chuckling.

"Don't laugh this off. I'm serious," he says and I stopped chuckling right away.

"N-no, not at all. We aren't even a couple," I tell him as he nods.

"Do you like him, then?" he says and I was about to shake my head no but I realized that was quite rude.

"I like him as a fri—"

"Don't give me the friend bullshit thing you all are talking about," he says and I widened my eyes at his choice of words.

"Well, if you meant it in another way, then, no," I say.

"Are you sure you're not lying?" he says, crossing his arms and turning around his desk chair.

"I'm sure," I say even though I'm actually not.

"Okay, I have another question for you," he says, turning around his desk chair once again.

"Okay," I simply say as he faces me seriously.

"Are you really Chelsea's sister?" he says.

At this, I found myself stop breathing. I can't feel my legs and I can feel my blood rushing all over my body. I feel like my lungs were about to run out of oxygen. I feel nauseous and I think I was about to faint.

"Oh, wrong person, I guess," he suddenly says and that's when I started breathing once again.

"How do you know her?" I found myself asking and he thinks about it.

"As you can see, my mom runs a flower shop business," he says.

"Cole didn't mention that to me," I tell him as he nods as if he expected that already.

"I'm pretty sure he wouldn't," he says and I just gave him a confused look.

"W-why?" I say as he turns around his desk chair again.

"We had a regular customer back then," he starts as he taps his fingers on both of the armrests. "She loved buying pink and yellow tulips," he adds.

That's when it hit me. Chelsea used to come home and give mom and me a pink and yellow tulip. We often ask her where she gets it and she always tells us that she picks them in the school backyard. I even remember how I tried to take a look at the school backyard but not spot any tulips there.

I found myself getting curious at Ash's story as I fumble with my fingers nervously.

"She told us about giving it to two of her best friends in the whole world," Ash continues and I was certain, I really was certain that he was talking about Chelsea. I had no doubt at all.

"Then?" I say, prompting him to continue his story.

"Then, there was this one time Cole was managing the shop," he says, turning his desk chair for the hundredth time.

"U-huh," I say, getting too impatient.

"And he saw that girl," he says casually as I heard footsteps from outside. "He even asked his name and gave her the flowers for free!"

Ash seemed excited as if he was the one in the actual story.

"So, what was the girl's name?" I ask, turning eager to know the whole thing.

"I remember her say it was Kei—"

The door swung open and when I turned to see who it was, I immediately looked away. It was Cole who only had a towel wrapped around his waist, droplets of water still dripping from the strands of his hair.

"Ash, what kind of stupid stories are you telling her again?" he asks as I looked at Ash. He looked stiff as if he was told not to tell me that story.

Ash stands up, leans closer to me, and whispers,

"She told us it was Keisha but we eventually found out that it was actually Chelsea."
