Chapter 40

The following week came by so fast and I realized that I wasn't able to talk to anyone who would give me a ride.

After finishing breakfast, I went out to walk to school because I didn't want to bother Paula right now. I'm pretty sure she's still sleeping. I walked as fast as I can, scared to come to school late. The wind was quite cold against my face so I adjusted my beanie up until the top of my eyes, just enough so that I could still see.

Suddenly, a car honked at me from behind and I jumped in surprise. I turned to look whose it was and I realized that it was Cole's car. I tried to walk faster, hoping that he won't stop and pick me up but that's exactly what he did.

He rolled the window and smiled at me.

"Come on, I'll give you a ride," he says and I was about to reject the offer when he adds, "Don't worry, I won't talk to you."

I opened the door and went inside. Sighing at the warmth of his car's heater. I can feel him throw sideward glances at me and I can't help but look at him.

"We weren't able to take a picture during midterms," he mentions.

"Oh, shit. We still have that project," I mumble as he shoots me a look.

"Did you just cuss?" he says with a surprised look.

"What are you so surprised about?" I say with furrowed eyebrows.

"You, Amelia Young, don't cuss," he says, staring straight at my eyes.

"You, Cole Beckett, should bring your eyes back to the road," I say and he does as I say but then he turns his face again to look at me.

"But seriously? Since when did you start cussing?" he says and I just roll my eyes at him.

"Let's do the midterms part later if you're free," I say, twisting a piece of my hair around my finger.

"Sure," he says, and just like that the rest of the trip was quiet.

Once we got to school, I immediately went out of his car and walked away as fast as I can when he called me out. I turned to look back at him as he locks his car.

"Let's walk together," he says, jogging to catch up with me.

"Okay," I just say as we walk inside of school in silence.

"So, we need a picture," he says as we got inside the locker.

I can't help but remember the fact that I shouted at him just a week ago. Shut him out even. Why is he even talking with me now?

"I don't think Mr. Schuster would know that we took this picture a week after midterms. Is not like we're allowed to take pictures during the actual exam," I tell him, placing some of my books inside the locker and taking out the ones I needed.

"What a clever proposal," he says before grabbing his phone out of his pocket.

As soon as I closed my locker shut, a girl approaches me. She looked young, probably a freshman or a sophomore.

"E-excuse me," she says as I turn around to look at her.

"How may I help you, ma'am?" Cole butts in as the girl blushes.

"I think she's talking to me not you," I tell Cole and he just chuckles.

"A friend of mine gave me a dare," the girl starts, her legs trembling. "They asked me to ask you if you're the one in this video."

She shows me the video of Chelsea and in an instant, my whole mood went sour. I grabbed the phone from her and deleted the video from her gallery.

"Hey!" she says, trying to retrieve her phone back.

"How old are you?" I say with a serious voice and I can tell that she was about to cry.

"F-fourteen," she says.

"Does your mom know that you have these kinds of videos on your phone?" I say and she just shakes her head, still trying to reach for her phone.

"Amelia, give her phone back," Cole says and I just glared at him. "Don't scare the little kid," he even adds.

"Oh, shut the fuck up, Cole. You don't know anything," I say before smacking the girl's phone against her chest which almost made her fall down on her butt.

I walked to the girl's restroom with a rage I'm pretty sure I won't be able to control if I don't control it now. I opened the faucet and splashed my face with some water. That's when finally, I came back to my senses.

I heard someone smacking a piece of gum and I realized that it was Paula.

"Hey," she says casually as she scrolls through her phone.

"You're here early," I say, wiping my face with my handkerchief.

"I just kind of wanted to chill here early in the morning," she says, stuffing her phone inside her jean back pocket.

"Aren't you scared to actually break the screen of your phone?" I say, looking at the phone sitting in her pocket.

"Why would it break?" she says, smacking her gum so loud.

"What if you accidentally sat on it?" I say still looking at her phone.

"I'm not that dumb," she scoffs. "So, which knight and shining armor drove you to school today?" she asks, changing the subject.

"There's no such man in my life," I say with disgust.

"How about Kite?" she says as I suddenly recall the last words, I told him.

"Don't even ask about him," I say, walking outside the restroom. "I'll go to my first class, see you."

I left her all alone inside the restroom and walked to my first class. I saw Cole already seated beside the girl whose name I already forgot. I turned to find another vacant seat, slouched there and slung my backpack on the chair in front of me.

Cole noticed me and tried to wave but I looked away from him the instant he spotted me. I can't help but notice how close he was with that other girl and a part of me wanted to pull the girl's hair for stealing my seat.

Cole suddenly approaches me with that girl.

"You've met before, right?" Cole says, presenting the girl in front of me like a gift.

"Yeah, but I forgot her name," I say and the girl just giggles.

"I'm Eliza!" she says, sticking out her hand. I didn't bother to shake it and just stared at Cole as if to tell him to just leave.

"Yeah," I simply say as the girl awkwardly removes her hand away from me.

"Hey, are you fine?" the girl asks, leaning into my face. I pull away my face from hers since it was too close.

"I'm okay," I say in a grumble and when I looked at Cole, his face was filled with so much concern I wanted to kick him.

"Can we talk later?" he says in an almost whisper and I just found myself nodding.
