Chapter 27
Mom places a tray with two cups of coffee on the table for Cole and I while we do study Biology.
"Wait, so what the hell is the difference between meiosis and mitosis again?" Cole asks, grabbing the cup from the tray. "Thank you, Mrs. Young," he tells mom.
"You're very much welcome, young man," mom replies before leaving us alone.
Cole looks at me with expectant eyes while sipping the coffee from the cup slowly.
"Basically," I start.
I make a Venn diagram with two circles and wrote meiosis on the first circle and mitosis on the third one, leaving the intersection between them empty for the similarities.
"Mitosis," I point the word with my pencil, "is about cell proliferation or in other words, increasing the numbers of cells."
I look at him to check if he is understanding whatever I said. He was just silent and looked as if he truly is listening.
"And meiosis on the other hand is about reproduction. Meiosis is when a cell divides and results into four daughter cells," I continue.
Cole slowly nods, looking at the Venn diagram carefully before pointing to the empty space between the two circles.
"Well, both are cell division processes," I say, writing it down. "And both start from a single parent cell," I add.
I place the pen down and stood up to get my General Biology 1 textbook.
"Where are you going?" he asks, still focusing on the diagram.
"I'm going to get my textbook," I say but he grabs my hand.
"I brought mine, it's in here," he says, pointing to his backpack.
I opened it to get the textbook out. I seated myself once again and flipped the book to page 105.
"Hey, I need you to explain something to me," Cole says, tapping my shoulder without bothering to look at me.
"What?" I say, closing the book and looking at what he was pointing at.
"This," he says, tapping his finger against the paper.
"Why are we suddenly in gen math?" I ask, groaning.
"I think I'm done with biology," he says as I cross my arms at him.
"Let's go there later."
Cole asks me to come with him somewhere when we were finally done with studying some of the subjects.
"No," I firmly say.
"We're just going to drive around for a while!" he insists, wrapping his coat around him tightly.
"It's already almost dinner, my dad would become furious," I say when suddenly mom places her hands on my shoulders from behind.
"I'd talk to your father about it, now, go enjoy with Cole," she says soothingly as I turn around to shoot her a look. She just smiles at me, the wrinkles around her eyes were prominent.
"B-but," I say.
"Come on!" Cole says excitedly before grabbing my hand and pulling me outside. "Thank you, Mrs. Young," he says to mom and mom just nods, still smiling.
"Wait, let me get your coat," mom says before turning to get my coat on the coat rack. She walks towards me and helps me put it on.
"Thanks," I softly say as Cole pulls me to his car.
"Let's enjoy," he says with much excitement before opening the door of the car for me.
I get inside as he closes the door for me.
"On second thought, I think I'd bring you somewhere special instead of just driving around," he says as soon as he got inside of the car, placing both of his hands over the steering wheel.
"Where is that?" I ask out of curiosity but he just winks at me.
"Watch and learn," he says.
"I don't think I need to learn anything here," I mumble and he just laughs.
"Your sense of humor is on point," he comments before we both fall silent.
He drives silently, pulling one of his hands away from the steering wheel and putting it on the back of his head. He adjusts the other hand on top of the steering wheel for more control.
"Do you know how to drive?" he suddenly asks, he probably noticed me staring at how he drives.
"Uhm, kind of," I say, remembering the times dad taught Chelsea and me.
"What do you mean 'kind of'," he says, turning the steering wheel with ease.
"I no longer drive these days."
Ever since Chelsea died, I stopped driving my mom's car. I don't know the exact reason behind it, but I'm pretty sure it's because Chelsea was the one who really wanted us to learn how to drive.
"Imagine going over 150!" she exclaims as dad pinches her on the cheek.
"I'm not going to teach you how to drive if you're going to do that," he says as Chelsea struggles to remove dad's crab-like pinch.
"I'm just joking," she says but I'm affirmative that she isn't. "Right, Amelia? I'm just joking, right? Tell dad!"
She looks at me with 'help me' eyes as dad continues to pinch her cheeks.
"Dad, stop pinching her," I say, giggling.
"You better watch your little sister, Amelia," dad says, removing his hand from Chelsea's cheek and grabbing the car keys from the wire hook.
"Of course," I say, putting my arm around her shoulders.
"Let's get driving then," dad says as Chelsea squeals and looks at me with excited eyes.
"I think I'm really going to drive over 150 soon," she whispers to me.
"I know," I say and she just pinches my cheek.
"I know that you knew, I just confirmed it," she says, still lowering down her voice, cautious that dad would hear her.
"I'd tell dad," I threaten however I had no plans on doing so.
"No way!" she shouts, removing my arm away from her and covering my mouth as we got out of the door.
"Kidding!" I say, my voice muffled.
"Really?" she says, whispering even though dad was already in the car.
"Yes," I reply and bit her palm.
"Ouch!" she shrieks, removing her hand away from my mouth.
"That's what you get for covering my mouth," I say, running to dad's car.
"Get back here, Amelia Young!" she shouts, running after me.
When she reached me, she grabs me by my waist and starts to tickle me.
"You know I'm not ticklish," I managed to say through gritted teeth.
"Hell, no! I know you are," she smirks, intensifying her tickling.
Soon, I found both of us lying on the ground like little girls. I got a quick glance at dad who was just watching us with the softest smile I've seen on him as Chelsea continues to tickle me.
"I surrender!" I say, trying to escape from her evil hands.
"I don't think I'm hearing anyone talk," she says and turns to dad. "Dad, did you hear someone talk?"
"I don't think so," dad says.
I tried to shoot him a look but I just ended up bursting into more laughter. Dad soon laughs at us.
"Stop it, girls, get in," he says like the strict dad he is.
However, he was actually chuckling. Chelsea finally lets go of me. She offers me a hand and I took it right away, tired from all the laughter.
Chelsea stares at me with a bright smile on her face and I just furrow my eyebrows at her.
"I love you!" she suddenly says, wrapping her arms around me tightly. "So, so, so, so, so, so, much!" she adds, making the hug tighter.
I remember how I just laughed that off since I found it really funny.
Little did I know, those were one of the last chances I had to tell her how much I love her, too.
Ever since Chelsea died, my whole life was filled with regrets that weren't there before.
Chelsea's death changed my life and will continue to change it.
I don't think I can handle it anymore.
I think I just want to...
