Part 8: Lollipalooza
The sandstorm swirled all around, thicker than ever. Whippersnapper Addie slowed the six horses to a walk. "We don't want to run off a cliff," she told Lucky Liam.
From somewhere in the distance came Vagabond Violet's voice. "You can't get away! I hear your coach wheels rumbling!"
"Should we stop still?" Liam asked. "Then we wouldn't make noise for her to follow."
"Good idea," said Addie. "Whoa!"
They stood still, listening to the wind howl, wiping sand from their eyes, wondering what had happened to Quincy Quarrel McQuarrie after he fell off the stagecoach.
"What's that sound?" Liam asked.
Something clicked and clacked, coming closer and closer.
"I'm scared!" said Liam. "Is it a prairie monster?"
Addie scratched her head. "We heard that sound not long ago. What was it? It doesn't make me afraid. It gives me a good feeling."
Clickety-clack!
"It's going past us," Liam said. "Now it's ahead."
A voice squawked from ahead. "Follow me!" yelled the roadrunner. "I'll lead you to safety."
Addie didn't use her loud whip snap. She shook the reins and called softly to the horses. "Yee haw!"
Those stagecoach horses were smart critters. They walked slow but steady, following the roadrunner's clicks. The coach wheels didn't rumble. They just creaked a little.
Soon the wind slowed down and there wasn't so much sand blowing around. Soon they could see the roadrunner, not running, just walking. When they came to the top of a hill, the roadrunner pointed with one wing at some buildings in the valley below. "There's Lollipalooza Ranch," it chirped. "Be sure and save me one."
"One what?" asked Addie and Liam.
But the roadrunner had already run rapidly down the road.
Addie did two whip snaps. The horses set off at a trot.
From the hills behind them where the wind still blew sand all around, came Vagabond Violet's faint voice. "Where are they? Where's that stagecoach? Where are those boxes?"
Whippersnapper Addie and Lucky Liam drove into the farmyard at Lollipalooza Ranch. The rancher was glad to get the chest full of money. Now he could pay the cowboys. He gave Addie and Liam a little bag of money for bringing that chest safely and quickly. "And here's something extra," he said. "Have a lollipop!" He held out a jar of lollipops.
"Aha!" said Addie. "I understand now. May we have three, please?"
"Sure, help yourself," said the rancher.
Lucky Liam grinned. "I know who gets the third one!"
"Wait a minute," said Daddy. "There's no crashing or tumbling or over-turning today? How am I supposed to rescue you if you don't have a disaster?"
"The roadrunner rescued us this time!" said Addie as she climbed out of her Magic Box.
"Who wants to help put together a mobile for the baby?" Daddy asked.
"We do!" shouted Addie and Liam. But first they scooted Addie's Magic Box to Box Corner. Then they scooped up bandanas and whip and slingshot and put them all away in Mommy's big Magic Box.
