Excuses
Yugyeom watches you as you moves abut the room he shares with Youngjae. Said roommate is in the bathroom while you are getting ready for the day, while Gyeom sits on his bed, still in his pyjamas. His gaze unnerves you, almost as much as the dream you had last night.
When you and Jackson had come back upstairs, Jackson had quickly excused himself to go to his room, leaving you with Yugyeom. In silence you'd both walked into his room, shutting the door behind you. The moment you turned back to face the room, Yugyeom was in front of you.
"Please say something," he pleaded. You didn't know what he wanted to hear so just gave him a reassuring smile and his hand a squeeze. Yugyeom blocked you as you tried to move past him. "Was tonight... too much for you? Was I... too much?"
You hated the fact that he though you'd left for a while because of him. So you did the only you could think of. And lied to him. Loathing yourself as you used your mess of a family as an excuse. "I got a call from my dad and needed some air. Jackson was out there too and we walked back up together." Immediately, your best friends face morphs into a picture of concern.
"Are you ok?" Yugyeom's brow furrows as he looks down at you and you find it hard to resist smoothing it back down.
"I'm ok. Just exhausted." You smiled wearily and he gave you a small grin back. You were changed after using the bathroom earlier, so all you did was fall onto the bed closest to you.
"Hey! That's my bed!" Your blurry eyes looked up to see Youngjae walking out of the bathroom, so you simply heaved your body off one bed and onto the other. The moment your head touched the pillow and your eyes closed, you were gone. In the distance, you could feel Yugyeom climbing in beside you and pulling the sheets to cover you both,
Then you fell into a deep, deep sleep.
The moment your eyes sprung open in the morning, you could still sense the man's lips on yours. Reaching up, you pressed your fingers to your mouth, only to feel them. Your heart was still racing as you rose from the bed. Sat on the edge, you looked behind you to see Yugyeom drooling onto his pillow. You smiled softly as you replaced the covers over him. Youngjae was snoring loudly in his bed and as you walked past he reached out to grab your hand, mumbling before letting you go. When you reached the bathroom, closing the door softly behind you, you used the bathroom and splashed water on your face before facing yourself in the mirror. By now voices could be heard on the other side of the door and you exited to see Youngjae throwing a pillow at Yugyeom who was laughing on his back.
So here you are, Yugyeom still having not moved as you gathered your clothes and bag.
"What did your dad say on the phone last night?"
You freeze, a deer caught in the headlights. So you dodge his question and say, "I can't stay with you forever, Gyeom."
You hear the bed creak as Yugyeom gets up, your back to him. Gentle hand take your arms and turn you to face him. After the dream you had last night, you can't look him in the eye. Your stomach is still in knots at the thought of not knowing who the man in your dream was. Yugyeom or Jackson? Who did you crave? Even the thought of it, you feel your heart contorting.
"Come with me then."
In surprise, your eyes fly to meet his and you scan his face for any sign of insincerity, finding none. The sound of the flush comes from the bathroom.
"Y...y...you can't say things like that." Your head and heart are at odds in this moment.
Yugyeom's eyes narrow in protest. "I mean it. Come with us. Live with us."
The worst thing about this is the fact that you are actually considering it. You can already picture it. Evenings by the Han River, mornings in cute Seoul cafes, days spent laughing.
You avert your eyes from his and stare at the painting above the beds. Neither one of you says anything but you know he's waiting for something. Anything. But you can't bring yourself to speak. The lump in your throat is constricting your breath and you find it hard to breathe as a million thoughts cloud your mind.
The bathroom door opens and you jump out of Yugyeom's hold as Youngjae enters the room.
"Let's go to breakfast. I'm starving." Youngjae says loudly, heading for the door. You are conscious of the fact that Yugyeom hasn't moved beside you. As you move towards the bathroom to get changed he grabs your hand but you shake him off, wanting to be alone.
"Give me time to think." You force out, closing the door behind you.
As you lapse in the silence of the bathroom, a single tear falls from your eye and you hurriedly lift a hand to wipe it away. It's not the fact you don't want to. Not the fact that you don't feel the something for Yugyeom. It's just the opposite. You do want to go with him, more than anything.
So what's stopping you? A voice inside your head echoes.
You change quickly and exit to find the main room empty. You know you can't stay with them. But as you stare at your bag, full of all the things you brought with you, you can't bring yourself to take it. Can't bring yourself to leave.
Walking towards the door, your phone vibrates and you look down at it.
Dad.
Decline.
You continue walking towards the door and grasp the handle, taking a deep breath before exiting into the corridor, expecting to find the group. But no one greets you.
You are alone.
