Chapter 33: Wedding Bells
Hope everyone is enjoying their summers as much as I am! Up to anything cool?
...worn yellow to any weddings?
———
Delphi hummed as she added final adjustments to Fleur's hair.
"Do I look alright?" Asked the older woman tentatively, hands smoothing over her dress nervously.
"You look breath taking. I don't think Ginny and I will ever recover from the blows to our self esteem." She replied, placing a reassuring hand on Fleur's shoulder.
Her fellow blonde suddenly turned, taking that hand in her own and gazing deep into Delphi's eyes. "I've been told you 'ave the sight." She said.
Delphi opened her mouth to dismiss it as casually as possible but Fleur continued before she had the chance.
"Please...I know these things aren't to be spoken out loud! But would you just look me in the eyes and tell me we make it? As a couple at least?"
This is why Delphi kept it a secret. The reasonable requests she'd look terrible denying, that build on each other one at a time toward disaster.
But it was the woman's wedding day, and Delphi looked her in the eyes and smiled, nodding.
Delphi adjusted her bridesmaid dress and moved over to help Ginny zip up hers before leaving the duo for some fresh air.
All the guys were down at the marquee, but she did bump into Hermione headed out without the purse she knew the girl would need.
Hermione jumped when she spied her, but Delphi only smiled innocently - a skill she was steadily perfecting. "You look lovely Hermione."
"Oh right, uh, you too."
"Yes," Delphi tapped her chin, eyeing Hermione critically. "Yes, the dress and shoes are lovely, but that purse..."
The younger woman stared at her uncertainly.
"Something purple and beaded would fit better. A durable bag suited to all occasions?"
She watched as it dawned on her face.
"You-"
"-Won't tell a soul." Delphi interrupted lightly, "No one will ever know you started out with a terrible gold bag that clashed with your gorgeous red dress."
She did her best Dumbledore twinkling eyes, which seemed to work by the unnerved look it earned, before turning away, "safe travels Miss Granger."
She loved the fact no matter how hard Hermione tried to pin them down, she and Luna could remain completely unfathomable to the genius...convinced as she was that divination was all rubbish.
Stepping outside, Delphi closed her eyes, inhaling the heady scents of the summer. She could smell the bushels of roses that were found on every table, and taste the faint bitterness of lemonade on her tongue. It was a perfect day.
As she headed toward the Marquee to see if she could scout some food before being dragged back to support the bride, she spied her sister convening with the gnomes. She was tempted to join, this group in particular knew some colourful swear words thanks to her boyfriends and were particularly interesting to interact with....but perhaps another time.
"Hiya Harry," she murmured to a plump red headed boy, making him choke on his drink, before she continued inside, determined to obtain food. She caught sight of pastries just about the same moment Molly Weasley caught sight of her and cursed her luck.
The woman beckoned her back toward the house and she sighed, trying to savour the fresh snacks with her eyes before following the mother of the bride back across the lawn.
She managed to escape the stylist Fleur had hired ten minutes later, hair far smoother and controlled than she liked. Slipping into Twins' old bedroom which was across the hall, she gazed out the open window at the steadily crowding marquee.
She will forever deny the squeak she made when she was suddenly face to face with Fred.
"Rapunsel," he addressed her charming grin in place, adjusting his grip on the oak tree he was precariously sat in, "I'd say let down your hair but I fear it is too short."
"Fred what are you doing?" She sat back up to stare at him, "The service starts in five minutes!"
He nodded thoughtfully, "I saw a fair maiden in need and could not but act with honour."
She cocked her head, only to gasp as he cast wingardium leviosa and levitated a whole tray of sausage rolls onto the window ledge.
"My handsome Prince..." she sighed, "I'd kiss you but I fear you'll fall out that tree."
"I'll take an IOU on that then," he grinned, "see you soon yeah Phi?"
She nodded, and he hopped back down to the grass below.
She watched him leave before reaching out to grab a sausage roll.
"DELPHI! DELPHI! IT'S TIME! Where are you???!?!?"
She swore colourfully in what Gaelic she knew, casting a quick stasis charm on the tray before leaving. The moment the groom kissed the bride she was going to the food table.
———
She enacted her plan not long after the happy couple started dancing, slipping past Remus Lupin and Molly Weasley, stomach twisting as the table came into view.
She managed to reach it barely ducking out of sight of her father's searching eyes.
The first mouthful of sausage roll nearly made her moan.
"Vell, this is a surprise, Miss Lovegood."
Delphi swallowed her mouthful and turned to give Viktor Krum a warm smile. "господин (Gospodin) Krum, it's a pleasure to see you!"
And it was. They hadn't exchanged letters, but had enjoyed each other's company a great deal during his year at Hogwarts. He hadn't changed much since then, a little taller perhaps, but it was refreshing to see him outside of his Durmstrang uniform, even if the black suit wasn't exactly casual.
He grinned at her use of a Slavic honorific, and bowed, "might I have a dance with you Delphi? It was such a pleasure at the Yule ball."
She eyed the food tray but nodded her head, "you may."
He took her hand and led her to the dance floor.
She smiled as he rested a hand on her hip, waiting for the next song to begin. She was sure the twins will be pissed she hadn't had her first dance with them, but she hadn't missed the way they'd been eyeing up some of Fleur's cousins.
Don't get her wrong, she wasn't much of the jealous type, the girls were stunning and she'd checked them out a few times herself. But, she wasn't particularly guilt ridden for saying yes to the man who reached her before the duo even glanced in her direction.
"You have a good summer?" He asked her as they swayed back and forth.
She hummed, "a wonderful one despite the oncoming unrest. I'm dating the Weasley twins and they don't let you worry or mope for too long. You?"
She didn't miss his nervous glance around the crowd when she mentioned her boyfriends, but Krum was a tough triwizard champion and he continued to dance with her regardless.
"Very nice, many letters with Hermi-o-ninny." He paused before deciding to address the other side of her answer. "The Bulgarian ministry is concerned, with the death of Dumbledore, your leaders are unprepared and the war will spill out to the rest of the continent. But with France and Germany stood between my country and yours, they are still relaxed. This, this Voldemorry has nothing on Grindelwald and we will be prepared."
She nodded, "the ministry won't handle it, that is true. But we do have some rather brilliant amateurs on the case. You know as well as anyone, not to underestimate Harry Potter."
He nodded absently at that before changing the subject, his sharp seeker's eyes set on something over her shoulder. "Hermi-o-ninny is dancing with that ginger boy. The one who makes her cry."
His grip on her waist tightened slightly.
Delphi gave him a soft smile, "he's growing into a man, that takes time."
"Time Harry Potter never needed, nor I." Grouched Krum.
"True enough, I doubt I can comfort you on this, Viktor."
He sighed, "love is complicated is it not."
"If it was simple it would be boring and without the challenge it certainly would not be a valued prize."
"Was your love a challenge?" Pried the Seeker.
Delphi bowed her head a little. "It will be."
"But mine to face thank you." Came Fred's voice. "Give me my girl, yeah, Krum?"
"If she wishes to be given, take care Delphi." Krum backed down gracefully.
She nodded as they separated, "you as well."
Krum had barely looked away before Fred's arms were around her waist as he leaned over her shoulder to kiss her cheek from behind. "This what I get for smuggling you food?"
Delphi smiled, leaning back into his hold, "this is what you get for enthusiastically guiding lots of young french girls to their seats, when you claim to be already taken."
She felt him startle a little, his body tensing slightly.
She could guess why.
Theirs was a relationship of few arguments, aside from the whole seer thing.
Theirs was also more of a friendship than a relationship, or felt like it sometimes, which was wonderful.
And this was the first time something like this had happened, and Fred had no idea whether she was really pissed or not. She was curious so she left him guessing, just to see.
Delphi adored her twins, and she was pretty confident they felt the same but she wasn't stupid either. They were charismatic and attractive, she certainly couldn't have been the first girl, and there was certainly a good chance her attraction had been in her initial reluctance...the chase and not in the prize at the end.
Whether Fred realised she was testing him, Delphi couldn't say.
"We flirt a lot. I know I at least enjoy it." He said eventually, and she was happy he was actually addressing the veiled accusation instead of misdirecting with humour. As they swayed to the music his hand found hers, weaving their fingers and raising the back of her knuckles to his lips. "But Delphi, I may flirt with others, but I am wrapped around your pinky finger, and would face any danger or humiliation to stay there."
Delphi couldn't help a blush, rolling her eyes as she turned around to face Fred, still wrapped in his arms, "I should never undermine the chivalry of Gryffindors."
He grinned, and she leaned up to kiss him.
"You look stunning." Murmured Fred when she pulled away.
His hands held her waist almost possessively. Krum taking the first dance seemed to have got to him more than she would have expected.
Her dress was yellow, she was a Lovegood after all, you simply must wear sun colours to a wedding. It clashed perfectly with everything else at the party and it was excellent.
She'd gone for a halter dress, figure hugging at the top, and a flowing skirt that she could run in better. And it had a brilliant effect on her boys.
They both had yellow cravats which made her heart warm, the colour clashed with their hair but they wanted to match her anyway.
As the second song ended she was spun away from Fred, nearly falling into George's chest.
"Everything alright?" He asked, though whether he wanted to know about Krum or Fred she couldn't tell.
"You two flirting with the French girls caught me off guard." She murmured.
Fred squeezed her hand before letting go to leave them to it.
However remembering something, Delphi reached out to catch the back of his jacket. "Stay close by Fred."
She could see his sudden alarm but she shook her head firmly, "it's going to be fine, but I want to be able to find you quickly...when things hit off."
He gulped, and she could see the joy in their faces had drained away. Fred still walked off of the dance floor, but only just, staying as close to them as he could.
Delphi turned to focus on George and tugged him down into a kiss. "Come on handsome, I want a good dance before the potion explodes okay?"
He gathered himself, and adjusted their positions so he could sweep her around the floor, "yes ma'am."
She smiled when he gave her a twirl. She'd never tell Fred that George was the better dancer. Well, not until a perfect opportunity to mess with him came up.
The wedding, as she knew it would be, was a brilliant final hurrah.
When Kingsley's lynx arrived, she reached each Weasley quickly, directing them to go to the Lovegood's home, and, grabbing Ginny, apparated there herself. The wards she'd built around the place were nothing to be sniffed at, and a little dabbling with (maybe illegal but it's a goddamn war) blood wards allowed every Weasley and Lovegood to get inside directly, and no one else. Thankfully everyone was too shocked to ask questions about it. They were more focused on the notable absences of three teenagers.
