Chapter 9

Once Shawn was ready, I drove his car down to the diner. We listened to Ed Sherran on the way, which was his favorite. He owns nearly every single one of his albums, I think it's kinda cute.

"Melanie! Shawn!" Shawn's mom greets us as we walk through the door.

"Hey Mrs. Mendes!" I wave, as we both take a seat at the counter.

"What will it be huh?" She smiles. "It's on the house today"

"Mom you don't have to do that..." Shawn blushes a bit.

"Oh yes I do! You two are my regulars." She laughs. "What would you two like?"

"Hmm how about we both get a slice of your infamous chocolate cake Mrs. M" I smile.

"Yeah that sounds good" Shawn chuckles. "And two vanilla shakes please"

"Coming right up" she winks, heading into the kitchen.

"I love your mom" I smile.

"Yeah she says the same about you" he grins. "I've been meaning to tell you something Mel..." he pauses. "I know we have been through-"

"Hey son!" Mr. Mendes smiles. "I see you brought Miss Melanie here today" he pauses, looking at me. "He talks about you a lot" he whispers with a wink.

"Dad! Jeez what happened to bro code?" Shawn whispers.

"Probably just the usual..." I trail off smirking. "How I look like shit in the morning" I laugh.

"I have never once said that" he laughs. "If anything I say the exact opposite" he chuckles.

"You liar" I grin, playfully hitting his chest.

"It's the truth!" He smirks, tickling my sides.

"Shawn!" I yelp, trying to protect my sides but I fail completely.

"Hey! Hey! Hey..." his mom chuckles. "Here's your order" once she says that Shawn stops, and he still has a playful grin tugging on his lips.

"This is not over" I chuckle, taking a sip of my shake.

"I know" he winks with a playful smirk.

I felt my heart leap for some unknown reason, my heart beating for something I never thought I would feel again...but of course I didn't want it too. I don't want to like Shawn again, love him...because I do not want to hurt him again. But it seems, even now, that no matter how hard I try to stay away or lock away my feelings...I still can't get rid of them.

Would it be wrong if we were together again?

It would be so wrong...but what if it's so right?

"Hey are you ready?" Shawn asked.

"Yeah" I smile. "Mrs. Mendes thank you so much for your delicious cake" I chuckle waving goodbye.

"You are so welcome Melanie! Please come back soon, we all would love it" she says sweetly winking at Shawn as we walk out the door.

"I'm so sorry, they can be so embarrassing" he blushes.

"No need to apologize, I like them a lot" I smile. "Now lets go back to your house"

-

Once we get back to Shawn's house we just sit around and play video games in his room. To be honest, this is the most time I've spent with him since I came back.

"Dammit. You beat me again" he sighs dropping his controller as I chuckle.

"I told you I'm a FIFA pro" I grin.

"That's okay" he pauses with a playful grin. "Because I know how to get you back" he says attacking my sides and making me fall over on his bed.

"Shawn!" I yelp as he laughs.

"Now say I'm the best at FIFA" he grins evilly.

"Never!" I laugh, feeling my sides hurt from laughing so hard.

"Say it!" He laughs.

"Okay okay, your the best" I say, and he stops. We look into each other's eyes for a moment and I begin to feel my cheeks heat up.

"Shawn! Dinner is ready!" I hear his dad, Shawn quickly climbs off of me and we both brush ourselves off quickly.

"Oh wow I didn't know it was this late..." I trail off. "My mom is going to kill me" I sigh.

"Not if she knows your with me" he says, raising an eyebrow.

"Well..." I trail off avoiding his gaze. "I haven't quite told her that we've been hanging out again" I mutter, feeling a little guilty.

"Melanie you've been here for four weeks...how haven't you said anything?" He lowers his head.

"It's never come up..." I pause. "You know how it is, my mom and dad work a lot during weekdays, they are only home on the weekends and I never see them on the weekends because I'm with you."

"I know but.." he sighs. "Let's just head downstairs" he gets up leaving the room quickly.

I couldn't help but feel this sudden awkwardness between us. I didn't know why it was suddenly so important for my mom to know we're hanging out again.

"Mom I'm walking Melanie back to her house" he says as we reach the bottom of the stairs.

"Okay" she smiles. "Are you sure you don't want to stay for dinner?" She says, turning her attention to me.

"Um Sure-"

"She can't" Shawn interrupts. "She has a massive amount of chem homework"

"Okay.." his mom trails off. "Well I'll see you tomorrow then sweetie" she rubs my shoulders and pulls me into a hug.

"I can't, but maybe I'll stop by" I say, remembering my date with Will.

"Okay honey. Bye" she smiles as we walk out and start walking across the street.

"What was that?" I tug on his arm, he sighs and looks back at me.

"What?" He huffs.

"What was that back there?" I pause. "Last time I checked we were having a good time, remember?" I snap.

"It's nothing, you wouldn't understand anyway" he sighs, continuing to walk across the street. He didn't say anything until we reached the other side of the street.

"So what do you have planned tomorrow?" Shawn asks curiously. Should I tell him?

"Um well..." I trail off. "I have a date with Will" I swallow, not knowing how he will take it.
