Chapter 1
[Shawn]
2 YEARS LATER...
The first year of Senior year is really big to me, even though it feels like any other day. I get up out of bed and hear loud trucks coming from outside. When I drag myself to the window I see four moving trucks. The house across the street has been on sale for months and my mom will be ecstatic to have new neighbors. Which means she'll embarrass me.
I look away from the trucks and throw on a random tee shirt. I pull on my pants and start to style my hair as my Mom yells.
"Shawn! We have new neighbors!" She sings as I roll my eyes with a small chuckle.
"Yeah I can see. Those trucks woke me up" I chuckle as I head downstairs.
"Good thing. It's almost nine" my dad says peering over his newspaper.
"What?" I say racing down the stairs. "It can't be that late"
"It is. Now take the car" my dad says tossing me the keys.
"Really?" I question with a smile.
"Yeah you've earned it. Now get going" my dad smiles as I run outside and get into the red corvette. I've been working so hard at the repair shop all summer so I could ride it and it finally payed off.
As I pull out of the driveway, I almost run into a car pulling out of the driveway across the street. I get out of my car quickly as the girl in her car does too.
"Who do you think you are! You can't just run-"
"Mel?" I squint looking closer at her. It can't be...
"Shawn?" She questions.
"I can't believe-"
"Stop. Stop right there" she says as I look at her confused.
"Why? I mean-"
"Save it please. Just get back in your car and I'll get back in mine okay?" She nods as I feel a little hurt. She used to be my best friend, but now she wants nothing to do with me? This makes no sense. Sure we used to go out but that was two years ago.
"Okay" is all I manage to say before getting in my car and letting her pass. I can't believe I almost wrecked my car into Melanie Summers.
For two and a half years I've forgotten that part of my life, and now she's back.
Melanie was always the one to 'ghost' is what I would call it. She would be somewhere and then completely disappear. She was never really the social type, she usually just hung around me.
I shake the thought of her out of my head and drive to school.
"Hey Shawn!" My friend Ethan says as I park my car. "Wow your dad actually let you have the car?" He chuckles hopping on the hood of the car.
"Dude easy!" I pause shooing him off my car. "I almost wrecked it this morning" I sigh.
"Woah what happened?"
"Hey guys!" Zach says.
"Shawn my man! How was your summer?" Brandon pats my shoulder as I chuckle.
"I'm good Brandon" I pause as we do our special hand shake. "But yeah I almost wrecked my car into Melanie" I sigh.
"Melanie? You mean Melanie Summers?" Ethan gasps.
"Melanie's back?" Brandon sighs. "Mel is bad news Shawn. I don't think you should-"
"Yeah she is." Zach pauses. "Look I think it's best to stay away from this one"
I sigh.
"Look guys I know your looking out for me but-"
Then I see her.
"Oh no" Ethan rolls his eyes.
"Oh yes" I push past them. "Mel!"
"Don't make a fool of yourself!" Brandon yells.
"No promises!" I shout back, approaching her. "Hey.." I say nervously as she rolls her eyes.
"Look I thought I made myself clear that I didn't want to talk to you" she purses her lips.
"I know but..." I pause. "I just really want to catch up you know?"
"I don't know Shawn..."
"Hey Shawn!" I hear Savannah Rivers say behind me. She wraps her hands around my waist.
"Really? You sure haven't changed" Melanie rolls her eyes walking away. I push Savannah off of me and grab her wrist.
"Mel...just give me a chance" I sigh. "I think it will be good for us" I shrug.
"Just one chance?" She raises her eyebrows.
"Just one" I smirk. "And then if you want nothing to do with me I'll leave you alone"
She chuckled at that.
"Okay" she smiles.
"Um meet me after school yeah? Um we can grab some burgers or something at my Mom's diner" I smile. "My treat"
"Alright" she chuckles. "I'll see you" she walks away as I smile ear to ear.
Call it a date.
