*Christine's POV*
I stand there shocked and scared. Why is he here?! Did he follow me here? And what is he going to do to me? I feel my hands begin to tremble slightly. "You're the man I bumped into at the market earlier today," I say, not thinking. I mentally scold myself for asking that. Why would I say that?
The man is still wearing his cape and his face is still covered by the hood, so I don't know what his facial expression is. "I am," he says with that same beautiful voice I heard earlier.
"Why are you here," I ask him. "This is the king's property."
I swear for a split second, I see his hands curl into fists and his eyes shine with rage from under his hood. But it gone as fast as it came. "Is that so," he says.
"Yes, it is," I say as I back up a little bit, the image of his split second rage still fresh in my mind.
The man then does something I don't expect him to do. He turns around takes the cape with the hood off. He sets the cape down on a nearby chair before back around. Once I see him, I feel my breath catch.
He's very handsome. He has slicked back, jet-black hair and weird, but beautiful, golden eyes. He's wearing a white dress shirt with a black waistcoat over it with matching black pants and shoes. But the thing that most stuck out was the snow white on half of his face.
I stand there silent for a moment, just looking at him. "If this is the king's property, why are you here," the man asks.
I look away from him as the reason why I'm here comes back into my mind. "My father told the king that I have a voice so beautiful it makes the angels weep," I say. "The king wants to see if what my father says is true. So he gave me a song to learn and tomorrow I will perform it in front of him."
"Is what your father said true," the man asks.
I take a deep breath and look down. "He exaggerated my ability," I say with my head still down.
"Let me hear you sing," I hear him say.
I look up at him. "Why," I ask him.
"Because if you're voice is good enough, I can help you perfect the song by tomorrow," he says.
"Why would you help me," I ask him.
"You seem like a honorable woman and I would not want you to face the wrath of the king," he says.
I feel a small smile play at my lips. I then remembered that he probably wants some kind of payment, which makes me a little nervous. "What do you want in exchange for these voice lessons," I ask him, doing my best to hide how scared I am.
*Erik's POV*
"What do you want in exchange for these voice lessons," she asks me. I can tell that she's trying to hide how scared she is. I don't need anything and I just want her to not face the wrath of the king.
"I want nothing," I say. "I just want you to have an amazing voice to impress the king."
I see her eyes widen in surprise. "Really," she says.
"Yes," I say with a small smile.
I see her eyes light up and a smile spread across her face. "Thank you so much, Monsieur," she says.
"Erik," I say before I can stop myself.
She looks at me confused. "Monsieur," she says.
"Erik," I say. "That's my name. Please call me that instead of Monsieur."
"Okay Erik," she says.
"And what may I call you Madame," I ask.
"Christine," she says.
Christine. What a beautiful name to go with a beautiful woman. Stop it, Erik! You are only giving this girl lessons so she can live; don't get feelings for her!
"Okay," I say. "May I hear your voice?"
"Of course," Christine says. I watch as she stands up. "What do you want me to sing," she asks me.
I sit and think for a moment. "Whatever you want to sing," I say.
*Christine's POV*
I stand and begin to think of a song to sing. Suddenly, the perfect song comes to mind. It was song I always sang with my mother when I was a little. She always sang the song to me, so I know all the lyrics.
I nod my head. "I have a song," I say to Erik.
Erik. What an amazing name! The name suits him for some unknown reason. I can't think of him named anything else. Wait?! What are you doing Christine?! You just met him!
"Alright," Erik says, pulling me from my thoughts. "Let me hear it."
I push those thoughts away and take a deep breath before singing. I feel myself get lost in the song as the words easily flow from my mouth in perfect time. And by the time I finish the song, I wish I could keep singing since it reminds me of my mother.
I look at Erik with an impressed expression. "That was better than I expected," he says. "I can easily help you perfect this song by morning," he says.
I feel a huge smile spread across my face. The king isn't going to be killing me anytime soon.
