Unmasked

And in one swift move, the stake went neatly through his heart and the limp body fell at my feet. I kicked off the pale hands, lit a match and threw it on the corpse. The flames engulfed the entire body.

That was one less evil in the city of Versailles. I deftly turned back and began walking briskly, hands thrust in my pocket.

'Excuse me,' a husky voice interrupted. I slashed out with my silver weapon in one sweep, half expecting a vampire to ambush me.

The boy immediately jumped back in fear, holding out his palms facing me, as a sign of surrender. I couldn't help laugh at the comical sight.

'I saw what you were doing.'

'What are you talking about?'

'You're a vampire hunter?'

I didn't let the surprise cross my face. After all, there's a lot of pretension out there.

'A Cazador to be precise. We are one of the oldest and the most trained families of Spanish descent. Who are you?' I narrowed my eyes.

'Greg,' he extended his hands. 'I'm from Romania and...'

But he couldn't finish his sentence because a lank, black figure dropped down from some roof and got him in a choke hold.

But before I could react, Greg took out a gleaming stake and slid it between his ribs in one fluid motion. The blood splashed on the ground and the assailant fell.

'You're a vampire hunter?' I couldn't keep the surprise from my voice.

'Just a novice,' he gave a dry smile.

'Would you like to accompany me tonight and gain some experience?' I offered.

'I don't think I should come.'

'Afraid?' I taunted.

'I may not be what I seem to be. You shouldn't just trust a random guy!' there was something sinister in his voice. 'The night isn't safe.'

'I'm a hunter for heaven's sake!' I exclaimed. 'Men are the least of my concerns. The night is my friend and my shelter.'

'Whatever!' he shrugged.

That was a cue for me to lead the way. And we started off into the night.

############################

Vampires have a natural instinct to be out prowling at the Halloween Eve.

With Greg by my side, fighting valiantly, we brought down some twelve of them, including a whole coven of three. He had my back every time some creature tried a stealth approach.

We were dead tired and I offered him dinner which he refused.

When I pestered, he seemed a bit uneasy and was nervously wetting his lips. Suddenly, he excused himself and disappeared into the dark, as mysteriously as he had come.

Strange!

Nevertheless I started walking home. It was chilly and dark and suddenly something pounced on me from behind. I lost my balance for a fatal second and to my utter horror, my stake skidded far down the road.

'It's over,' the familiar husky voice whispered. 'We're all safe now from you...'

And I felt the sharp sting of fangs on my neck.

Then it was all darkness...
