Soulless

Tara smiled, a pure innocent one of pleasure.

"Shh, Tara, don't smile, I pressed her face to my chest, hiding the beautiful face ,"Mommy doesn't like to see smiles."

She looked at me confused, making her face into a cute, round pout.

Just then Ivy entered the room stone-faced and snatched Tara away from me, her face expressionless.

Stuffing the baby bottle into Tara's mouth, she slumped onto the chair.

"Why so grumpy?" I enquired, sitting down across the table.

She made a face, taking out the bottle and patting Tara gently.

Tara gave another charming smile.

Ivy shot her a death glare, handing her over to me.

"She's just a baby," I tried to explain.

She left, slamming the door in my face.

I wanted to hear her voice. She had been silent for over 15 years.

I peeped into her laboratory, to find her fidgeting with a weird metal helmet, which had a tangle of wires poking out of it.

She put it on and a kind of sonic shock wave hit me, rippling away further, gaining momentum.

My hands went instinctively to the sound blockers in my ears and Tara's. These were the privileges we got, being her family. We didn't have to suffer the mental bondage that she kept the rest of the world in.

Being a science nerd, she had invented a device to control the minds of the entire world. She wanted the whole humanity to suffer her pains. I had tried to prevent her devilish mission, but her sadness had stopped me.

When were were in college, her relatives said that she had seen the brutal killing of her parents by her father's boss, who had then dragged her to his house and had  gang-raped her with his friends. Then they had dumped her to die.

She had miraculous survived, but the psychological trauma, the world looking down upon her, had broken her.

I knew there was only one way to save the world from going psychotic like her. I needed to make her talk, and smile.

The streets had people going about in their routine work. All faces were a mirror of her mood. There was no laughter, no happiness. All because of Ivy's revenge.

As planned, I went to her old house, which had been empty. I rummaged through the drawers until I brought out some old recordings.

Grabbing the record player, I brought the entire thing to the laboratory.

The laughter and voice of a child flowed from it.

She whipped around, facing me.

"Ivy, you weren't like this. The world betrayed you, but if you do the same, what is the difference between them and you?" I said, handing Tara to her.

She grabbed a fistful of Ivy's hair, and pulled them, smiling.

She looked at me, at Tara, and closed her eyes.

Opening her eyes, she pressed her lips to Tara's cherubic cheeks and gave a small smile.

"Thanks Jared," she whispered.

"Finally," I cried, relieved.
