Emotional damage
June 16th, 2059
Today was supposed to be a somewhat normal apocalyptic day, but it wasn’t. We finally found a hideout. Except it was hidden behind some foothills. We almost didn’t notice it. The hideout luckily had most of the stuff we needed. Like car tools, even food. We checked the expiration dates for the food and only a third of the food was spoiled. So we threw them out, obviously. There was still a lot of food left. And if we ran out of food we could get food from another forest or stream near the foothills.
Anyways like I was saying. Something happened! Auntie had gotten stressed and her water broke earlier than it was supposed to. We were all panicking. Doctor Quotez was the calmest among us. I guess it was because he’s used to delivering babies. He told us what to do. I was required to comfort auntie, while mother was supposed to get a towel and a bowl of warm water. Tsubaya was to give the doctor scissors.
Dad got a shirt to dress the baby and he also got another shirt to serve as a makeshift diaper for the baby. It was horrifyingly strange. Auntie was screaming while she pushed the baby out. Her grip on my hand tightened and it was painful for both of us, but I had to withstand it for her sake. After 12 hours (no big deal) of panic and more pain for auntie, the baby was out. It was a baby girl! We were all tired, but happy to have a ray of hope in our group. Dr Quotez carefully measured and cut the umbilical cord.
He discarded it after and cleaned the baby girl. We all did our best to keep Auntie and the baby happy. This is truly a miracle, because a lady at auntie’s age can never give birth. It’s rare and she pushed through with some shit coming out the way. I’m guessing I’ll be like that when I have my own kids. Ehh it's ok. Don’t really care. I’m really happy that the baby’s here with us. We cleaned up the mess and Auntie. She felt embarrassed, but Dr Quotez insisted it was actually normal.
We all decided to camp in the hideout for a few months if not more. While mother and Mr Quotez would comfort auntie and the baby girl; me, dad and Tsubaya would look for tools to help board up our hideout and secure it. It was hard work and we’d often take a break to eat or drink water. I asked mom and dad If I could try contacting the army or any available rescuer. They agreed.
I prayed and hoped that my phone would work outdoors like this. I know phones are bad for the environment, but I don’t have a choice! It turned out my phone worked. I felt relieved. All that was left was to contact someone. I dialed 911 and waited while it rang. It felt like hours, but someone finally picked up. There was static in the background and my phone would glitch often while I was explaining our situation, but it managed to work out. I was feeling hopeful all for the next few words to shatter that. I was enraged and in disbelief when the 911 operator said they couldn't help us. I shouted and complained about the fact that they could help hundreds of people, but not us for some reason. It was too ridiculous!
My mind was all over the place. Half of me felt like they were lying and they could help us, but didn’t feel like it. The other half felt like maybe they were telling the truth. I asked again but was left with the same robotic answer almost like the operator was emotionless. I was left dazed and defeated when the 911 operator hung up. I sighed and cradled myself, while I rocked back and forth. I screamed and at that moment I went through every emotion possible. I promised myself I wouldn’t give in. Looks like I failed!
Everyone noticed and asked me what was wrong. I was tempted to lie so they wouldn’t have to feel disappointed, but I told them anyway. As expected, they were disappointed and angry, but they said there was nothing to do now but accept it and keep surviving as long as we could and escape all this if possible. I nodded.
I decided to check one more thing. I clocked in on bcw news. It was chaos. The news reporter was live and the camera followed her while taking in the destruction of the buildings, people, ground and animals alike. There were fires everywhere that multiple firefighters were battling to put out! And to think this happened within the space of roughly four months! The news feed ended up with the news reporter getting eaten by a zombie. It was pretty gory!!
