Lynette Ryann and Daniel Parker
Even though Daniel is the more developed character, Ryann is listed first. Because Ryann always goes first.
Ryann and Daniel are the two major Kingdom employees in Spock. The former is head psychologist and probably a bunch of other little things too - she has her finger in a lot of pies. But her main job is to study the minds of the test subjects and ensure their psychological needs are being met. . . and that none of them get ideas for escape or rebellion. The latter starts as a lowly medical technician and then becomes Evan's supervisor, basically the main scientist in charge of making sure Evan is where he's supposed to be when he's supposed to be there, gathering data concerning Evan, and analyzing said data. There's no glory in it, though - he basically goes from lowly techie to lowly nanny.
Ryann's the main antagonist. Though she's not the one pulling all the strings, she's the highest authority that interacts with Evan on a regular basis. Evan and Gabi are her pet project: the ultimate case study on how to break someone to your will.
Ryann's ruthless, manipulative, and a master of the long game. Her ENTJ patience runs far further than Gabi's (at least, it seems to), and she's more than willing to sacrifice one person for the sake of advancing the human race. She's convinced many of her subjects, Iri especially, to think the same, and it's one of her main ideas she tries to instill in Evan: that his life doesn't matter, only the knowledge humanity will gain from his life. Fortunately, Evan is just too prideful to ever truly believe it.
Ryann also sets up the punishment system for Evan and Gabi using Tosigo once she finds out that Evan's is deathly afraid of snakes. And you'd better believe she uses it. She also has an undying need for control, which is why putting disfigured children into nice compartmentalized boxes (both figuratively and literally) until she needs them again is satisfying for her.
Ryann is in her late forties, early fifties, with shortish graying blonde hair usually knotted in a bun or up in a ponytail. She's somewhat of a natural beauty, though age is beginning to take its toll on her (and she doesn't much care, or bother with make-up). She has hawkish grey-blue eyes. She wears khakis, plain button-down work shirts, black loafers, and an ever-present white lab coat.
(Disclaimer: Of course, not all ENTJs are villains. But lots of villains are ENTJs. They're the most likely to take over the world, after all.)
Then there's Daniel.
Oh, Daniel.
Daniel Parker is a 26-yr-old INTP male biotechnician who is in both the right and the very, very wrong place. The right place in that he has a good job in a field he worked hard to get into that pays good money that he can send to support his single mother and six younger siblings. (I'm 97% sure he comes from a Mormon family.) The wrong place in that he's experimenting on innocent children.
Unfortunately, Kingdom employees are secretly as trapped as the test subjects. Try to resign or sell secrets, and your superiors will make sure you never work in STEM fields again. Retirement is basically the only way out, and you're still monitored for life afterwards. Daniel's fear of being forced out of work takes over his moral compass, and when his superiors tell him to do tests on a sixteen-year-old boy, he does it.
But, unlike Tosigo, he tries to be nice about it.
He and Evan have a rocky start, with Daniel desperately trying to prove he's not "one of them" and Evan bitterly insisting he, in fact, is. As time goes on, however, Evan learns more about Daniel's motivations and they grow closer, until Evan depends on Daniel emotionally in a way that's. . . healthier than some of the worse options, at least. After everything is over, Evan easily refers to Daniel as a friend and is upset to see him sent to jail. He also meets Daniel's family and helps them reconcile their distress upon learning what Daniel was doing at Kingdom.
All in all, Daniel is rather like Severus Snape: you understand why he does the bad things he does, but that doesn't absolve him from or give him a good excuse for doing those bad things.
(Literature needs more frustratingly morally ambiguous characters like Severus Snape.)
Daniel is adorable and fluffy in appearance and I love him very much. He has a shock of shockingly blonde hair that sticks up like he's just been shocked by an electrical outlet. That, plus his ocean-blue eyes, jeans, polos, sneakers, and - of course - white lab coat, really gives him the young-and-carefree-genius look. But he's actually constantly stressing over everything that involves another human being.
Especially when he's suddenly put in charge of a scared teenager who just found out his true species.
I love Daniel very much, but I can also foresee him potentially becoming the Scrappy, which worries me a little. Ah well. I'll continue loving him despite his flaws (and multiple crimes).
Relationships with other characters (Ryann):
Evan: To be controlled at all costs. She finds him a frustrating person but a stimulating challenge. She's broken everybody else - he's just the whipped cream on top. (She won't be that blatantly evil, I just haven't developed her further yet.)
Gabi: An unfortunate casualty, but an important tool to keep Evan in line. Ryann greatly underestimates Gabi - probably her worst mistake ever. Even once she takes Gabi on as a sort of apprentice and appreciates her young intelligence, she doesn't put nearly as much stock in it as she should.
Ximena: Only knows her as the teenager who somehow revealed their carefully hidden operation to the world. Hates that she secretly respects that.
Iri: Cares about her somewhat, but sees her more as a pet that can do cool tricks than a person. You love and baby your pets, but you don't give them any freedoms.
Tosigo: One of her hardest victories whom she now views as under her complete control. She's ultimately wrong.
Rosario: Another one of "her kids."
Daniel: Looks down on him because she's his superior employee. Looks down on him because he's weak. Looks down on him in general.
Abuela: Decides she's not enough of a threat to be taken care of.
Esteban: Forever infuriated at him for having the audacity to smuggle baby Evan out of Kingdom.
Raquelita: Rather impressed she managed to keep Evan from them for so long.
Relationships with other characters (Daniel):
Evan: Daniel pities Evan at first, and irrationally resents him just for being there. It's a lot harder not to feel guilty about your work when you're directly hurting someone on a daily basis. He tries to somehow make up for this by being as nice to Evan as possible, but he also has a hard time listening to Evan unload once he feels safe enough to really talk about his feelings around Daniel (rather than the regular bitter comments and provoked outrages). Daniel doesn't do well with feelings. But he forces himself to do it because he's half convinced it makes up for his wrongdoings somehow. Eventually, Evan and Daniel grow close and become friends. Daniel might also help with the rebellion, but I don't know to what extent.
Gabi: He sees some of himself in her. And he's a lot more jealous of her bravery than he'll admit. He also doesn't blame her for hating him so much, and absorbs her harsh words and glares without retaliation. He may end up being the channel of communication between Gabi and Ximena, which would open up a world of possibilities for snarky conversations.
Ximena: Evan often fantasizes about her out loud around Daniel, so he hears a lot of good things about her. He's mainly relieved when she manages to put a stop to Kingdom, even if it means him going to jail.
Iri: He thinks her wings are beautiful and almost make all this worth it. However, when he's actually around her, he's very uncomfortable. (In the themes of anaphirism and disabled rights, Daniel represents the general population who add to the problem by a) doing what everyone else is doing just because they're all doing it and b) are too uncomfortable around people that are unlike them to really treat them as equal people.) Most of what he knows about her personality-wise is from Evan's complaining.
Tosigo: Feels secondhand resentment towards him based on Evan's feelings, and is a little afraid he might get a similar treatment if he's found helping Evan's cause.
Rosario: He's instinctively grossed out by her foreign and unnatural anatomy and can't handle being around her very well because of that.
Ryann: Fears and resents her. In that order.
Abuela: Meets her once after his imprisonment. She gives him a piece of her mind, oh yes she does. But she also sneaks in a quick thank-you for doing what he could to help Evan.
Esteban: Really admires him for his genius in designing Evan's genetic code (and also for having the bravery to escape Kingdom... though that didn't really work out for him, did it?)
Raquelita: From what Evan says, she was a good woman.
I'll post a final chapter about Abuela, Esteban, and Raquelita, and then that'll be all I can tell you about Spock for now. It's felt really good to tell you guys about my babies. Do you want me to do a Q&A chapter for Spock too, maybe?
