Iri, Tosigo, and Rosario
The three main homegrown Kingdom mutants of the story. These three have never been outside (except maybe Tosigo, but I'm not sure how or when), and their perspectives of their predicament all clash violently with Evan's. They also teach him coping mechanisms - or, at least try to, if he listens. He's convinced he's right and they're wrong about everything, and that infuriates them (mostly Iri). Does Evan end up being right about most things, like the fact that their imprisonment is wrong? Well, yeah. Does he listen to other people's perspectives anyway? Not so much. Diplomat he is not.
First is Iri. Iri is the character with the. . . richest history, we'll say. Three years ago, she was the main character; now, I only recently found a way to fit her back into the story. She was scarily close to disappearing from existence entirely.
Only my stubborn determination to have someone with bird wings in this story saved her.
See, Iri is a bird hybrid (which type of bird has changed more often than her name), the most successful hybrid of her kind. She has functional bird wings that grow from her back and are big enough to carry her body weight. In order for that to work, however, she has very little body weight to begin with. She's quite tiny. I'm not entirely sure what her anatomy is, but her legs are the smallest part of her, quite possibly small enough that she can't hold her own weight on them for long. She also has extra muscles and organs in her chest and small intestinal organs, which makes for awkward proportions on her torso - but also makes it easy for her to tuck her legs up underneath her when she glides. Her wings (which probably resemble those of a scarlet macaw, glossy ibis, or roseate spoonbill) easily spread twice as wide as she is tall, and can basically wrap all the way around her and make her disappear in the feathery fluff. They can carry her in that if she jumps off something, she'll fall slowly and won't get hurt, but they can't do much more than act as majestic parachutes.
Kingdom hasn't figured out human flight yet. But they're getting closer.
Iri is an ISFJ and, pun totally intended, the Mother Hen of the mutants. She's only been so for like a month in my head, though, so I don't really know how it works. After all, she lives in one of many rooms full of cages full of mutants, and there aren't exactly mix-n-mingle events at Kingdom. Ryann wouldn't foster that type of bond, either, because she knows giving the mutants a "leader" is a Bad Idea. So I'm not sure how any of that works, but it does. Somehow, Iri is the main obstacle between Evan having the support of only a few mutants and Evan having the support of basically everyone. Iri is the Spot Conlon of this story.
The problem is, she doesn't really want to hear what Evan has to say.
This boy from the outside is put in the cage next to her and starts telling her her life is terrible and she should fight against everything she ever knew? That he's somehow better than her just because he's been outside? And the more Evan tells Iri about "the outside," the more convinced she is that's it's not worth fighting for. It sounds chaotic, dangerous, unsafe at every turn. But Evan keeps telling her she's wrong, that her home is the worst place on earth.
Yeah, it takes a while for her to finally listen to him.
Other appearance stuffs: Iri is super pale, with a slightly pinkish tint to her skin. Her hair is either thin and mousy or entirely non-existent. Her eyes are unnaturally big and beady black. She might have whites of her eyes? Or she might just have a sclera, I dunno. She might actually have worse eyesight than both a bird and a human, rather than the ideal hawk eyes. As you can see, I have more to lock down about her anatomy and appearance.
Iri might also be on the autism spectrum, though I haven't made any decisions about that.
Then there's Tosigo, our favorite snake boy. His name is just the Spanish word for venom, a name he gave himself (possibly with some help from Evan's grandfather, who also possibly worked at Kingdom before Evan was born). He can be deadly, and he knows it. He has venom, and an innate desire to use it - and he has before, in controlled tests. Not nearly enough, but he deals.
Tosigo's characterization is pretty in flux right now, so I can't tell you many concrete details about his personality. Mainly, though, he represents the jaded victim who understands that life could be better but has given up trying to make a change. He does what he's told, he's adaptable, and he appears as if nothing gets to him, that it all just slides off. He's used to this. This is his life. It's just how it is.
When Evan shows up, Tosigo quickly gets fed up with his loud, boisterous defiance. Evan doesn't understand that that's not how this works, that this isn't the way to deal. When Evan starts planning rebellion, Tosigo joins in as a background player - he wants out, but he doesn't think they have much of a chance, and he doesn't want to be caught in the fallout when it fails.
There's also a small part of him that's deeply envious of Evan's life out in the world. But he'd never, ever admit that. This envy manifests itself as annoyance at Evan, and Tosigo often cuts off Evan's rantings and tantrums with quiet one-liners that Evan's hotheaded anger can't logically work its way around. Which usually just makes Evan more angry.
Tosigo's also the one in charge of torturing both Evan and Gabi when Ryann feels Evan needs to be "put in his place." And he does it. Because being on the right side of Ryann and Kingdom is worth more than any pain or resentment he might cause the Morales siblings. It's also a chance to use his venom, which relieves anxiety for him. (Of course, Ryann gives Evan and Gabi the antidote, but not until after they go through a considerable amount of the temporary pain.) Does he feel guilty? Yes. But not enough to defy his captors.
Tosigo doesn't know what ethnicity he is (it's somewhere in his records). He has dark-chocolate skin and shaggy black hair that's been maintained but never styled. He has human eyes that are smoky grey-black, a human tongue, and human teeth... with some fangs mixed in. If you didn't know he wasn't human, they might just look like prominent eyeteeth (he only has them on top, not both like those plastic vampire fangs), but they secrete venom and are quite sharp.
I suppose you could call him a vampire, though if you did, both he and I would punch you.
He also has patches of dark green scales on his arms and face. He's pretty tall and slender, and also probably a liquid, based on how comfortable he can look in pretty much any position. His white teeth and white test subject uniform contrast sharply with his skin. I also imagine him with bare feet, though the more I think about it, the more impractical that is (making kids with diseases walk on a floor barefoot with a bunch of other kids with diseases). But like. . . bare feet are super attractive/adorable to me for some reason. So I really want it for Evan, Tosigo, and Iri.
Anyway.
And finally, Rosario.
She's basically a blank slate right now. She was never super developed in the first place, but now all I really know is that she breathes water, she lives in a tank, she speaks ASL, and she's pretty much nothing like past incarnations of herself.
Tosigo and Rosario are basically siblings. They've been with each other their entire lives, they helped each other come up with their names, they're best friends, and they rely on each other for emotional support. Their friendship started with smol Tosigo watching Rosario float around in her tank and wishing he could talk to her. (She can hear just fine, but she's always in the water, and the sound waves get too distorted between the air and water for her to understand speech.) Then one day he saw a scientist making signs with his hands, and Rosario made signs back. Tosigo realized they were communicating, and asked if they could teach him the signs as well. He had some education, mainly to prove that he could learn, and it didn't really matter what they taught him, so they agreed. Now, Tosigo and Rosario are constantly signing to each other from across the aisle, and they can't imagine life without each other.
It's the sweetest thing.
Evan never really learns how to talk to Rosario, so she's kind of just there, this beautiful, twisted mermaid who seems far too serene for her situation. She'll be more than that as I develop her, but that's what I've got right now.
I also have basically zero idea what she looks like. She's crossed with a jellyfish, and she used to have a very dynamic design, but also an impractical one (she also used to be blind which... doesn't work so much with the ASL). These days, I don't know, so I can't really tell you anything. Sorry.
Now, the main question is this: how did Evan, Iri, Tosigo, and Rosario, four very different mutants, end up as neighbors?
Well, they have two, possibly three, things in common: They're about the same age (Iri's 14/15, Tosigo's 17/18), they're all the most successful mutants of their type, and they (possibly) all require the same temperature in their environment.
If Evan ends up being some type of reptile hybrid, this last one will mean that all four of them need high temperatures and plenty of light to be healthy. Their cages will only have one level (rather than being stacked) and will be topped with mesh to let in the light from the sunlamps on the ceiling. This type of grouping makes the most logical sense when it comes to cost efficiency of Kingdom. It's possible the room with these four's cages is divided by both age/success and temperature, though I'm not sure if Kingdom is big enough for that.
Relationships with other characters (Iri):
Evan: Their relationship is rocky, for reasons described above, and because she has a hard time empathizing with him. They end up eventual allies, though.
Gabi: She feels sympathetic pain for her when Evan explains what the situation is, and she's absolutely shocked that she got the guards to help their cause.
Ximena: Never really meets her, though Evan sometimes talks about her when he's half asleep.
Tosigo: They're kind of like cousins. They have a bond since they're both mutants, and they're sort of friends, but nothing special. They bond further over their annoyance with Evan, and Tosigo listens to Iri rant about him when he isn't there.
Rosario: Never really talk, but they make eye contact a lot, so they feel connected in a way.
Daniel: Thinks he's quite nice, but also looks down on him somewhat for being a novice.
Ryann: The closest thing to a mother figure Iri has. Ryann helps Iri with her anxiety, and Iri feels safe around her.
Abuela: Maybe meets her at some point, but doesn't ever get to know her.
Raquelita: Stories about her from Evan about what mothers are really like are part of what help Iri to want to fight for her freedom.
Esteban: Iri doesn't understand why Evan would hold a grudge against him.
Relationships with other characters (Tosigo):
Evan: Finds him obnoxious, whiny, and problematic. He disrupts the waters and makes Tosigo's life just generally harder. But he also feels some pity for him and tries to help him adjust.
Gabi: Feels somewhat guilty for hurting her, and admires her for her courage.
Ximena: Thinks she's judgy.
Rosario: Relationship described above. I love them so much.
Daniel: Thinks he's a pansy who cuts Evan too much slack.
Ryann: Fears her more than he'll admit. Being in her good graces (or, more accurately, under her radar) is one of his highest priorities.
Raquelita: Doesn't really know much about her, but he figures Evan is embellishing the stories anyway.
Esteban: Doesn't want to get involved in Evan's daddy issues in the slightest.
Relationships with other characters (Rosario):
I have no idea except for Tosigo. She needs a lot more development.
Well, there you go: the three main Kingdom mutants. Next up will be Ryann and Daniel, and then the three Morales adults, and then I think I'll be ready to throw myself back into GR with all this stuff off my chest.
