Gravity Falls MBTI Types
As you may know, I'm an MBTI junkie. Not your grandma's MBTI, with cardboard-cutout type descriptions and iffy analysis. No, I'm into bona fide Myers-Briggs Type Indicator with Jungian analysis and cognitive function stacks.
I'm an INFP myself, which stands for Introverted, iNtuitive, Feeling, and Perceiving and has the functional stack of dominant Fi (introverted feeling), parent Ne (extroverted intuition), child Si (introverted sensing), and inferior Te (extroverted thinking). Sometimes I act more like an ENFP (for one, I'm a lot more open than most people seem to think an INFP can be), but based on my functional stack, I really believe I'm an INFP.
Because of my love for MBTI, I like typing fictional characters as well. In this chapter, I'm going to start a discussion on the potential MBTI types for the Gravity Falls characters. I'll give my analysis for each of their types, and I'd love to hear what you think! Do you agree with my types? What types would you give the characters? Why?
(Note: If you are just getting into MBTI, please know that the popular website, 16personalities.com, is not an MBTI test. It is a Keirsey Temperaments test. The best MBTI test I've found thus far, because it is based in the cognitive functions, is here: https://keys2cognition.com/explore.htm. Heidi Priebe on Thought Catalog also has some good articles analyzing the different types. Please exercise a healthy amount of skepticism when something on the internet claims to be MBTI :P)
Okay, let's get to it!
Gravity Falls MBTI Types:
Ford: INTJ
I have no doubt in my mind about this. He's just the quintessential INTJ, and I love him. INTJs lead with Ni (introverted intuition), supported by Te parent. His selfish assumptions that he's the only one who can save the world and his occasional reckless behavior are signs of Fi child and inferior Se (extroverted sensing).
Stan: ESTP
Haha, what fun for an INTJ to have a twin brother who's an ESTP, almost the opposite type. I believe Stan leads with Se and has an inferior Ni, which easily leads to clashes between the brothers (Stan values Se while Ford sees it as reckless and idiotic). Stan's dominant Se feeds into his creativity for the Mystery Shack displays that he builds. He also has child Fe, which shines through during Weirdmageddon, when he makes sure people can get to safety in his Shack.
Dipper: INFJ
I'm not sure on this one. For years I thought of Dipper as an INTP, but it never felt quite right to me. INTPs have parent Ne, but I don't think Dipper uses Ne nearly as much as he does Ni. (Fun fact: Everyone uses all eight cognitive functions, but our functional stacks typically focus on the top four that we use, because we don't use the bottom four "shadow" functions nearly as much.) Dipper doesn't seem to have exactly the same thought processes as Ford, either, so I think he uses Fe (extroverted feeling) and Ti (introverted thinking) rather than Te and Fi. His Fe parent causes a desire to be accepted by others, and his Ti child drives his logic (though sometimes in rather haphazard ways). His dominant Ni, shared with Ford, is part of what creates such a strong bond between them.
But like I said, I'm not quite sure, so if someone has a better type for Dipper, let me know!
Mabel: ENFP or ESFP
Ah, Mabel. Bubbly baby girl. Mabel is very clearly extroverted, and her open and creative nature leads me to believe she leads with a perceiving function, Se or Ne. But which one? That's where I'm unsure. At times she seems to focus on abstract concepts (such as matchmaking); other times, she seems very focused on the physical world around her (such as the way she noticed and befriended Candy and Grenda). Both types have Fi parent and Te child, and Mabel's Te child especially shows in Boss Mabel, when she snaps and starts ordering everyone around. If she's ENFP, then she has inferior Si (which leads to her rejecting a lot of the traditional ways of doing things). If she's ESFP, then she has inferior Ni (which leads to her rejecting her intuition as inaccurate or haphazard).
I personally think she's ESFP, but I can see a case being made for either one. What do you think?
Pacifica: ESFJ (or so she appears)
When we see Pacifica, she uses Fe and Si the most. Fe to recognize and manipulate people's emotions, and Si to act according to Northwest tradition. Thus, she appears as an ESFJ. However, this may not be her actual type. Sometimes, people's types can be repressed through trauma or survival instinct, and the person can appear as one type when they're actually, when they're acting at their healthiest, another type entirely. We don't get to see Pacifica much after her redemption arc, so we'll probably never know what her true type is. It could be ESFJ, or it could be INTP, or maybe something else. I'm personally a fan of headcanons that have teenage Pacifica as this formidable gamer girl, and I like the idea that she could be an INTP at heart (also INTPs and INFJs have good dynamics, and I ship Dipcifica haha).
Soos: ISFP
Soos truly is a man of mystery. I'm not sure what his type is, but I think it's possible that he's an ISFP, with dominant Fi and parent Se. His Se parent factors into his handyman skills, and may also contribute to his love of FCLORP. What do you think?
Wendy: ISTP
I'm not sure about Wendy, either. I'm pretty sure she has high Se, which makes her an xSxP type. SPs are also known as the most chill types, and that fits Wendy. I ultimately went with ISTP because, while Wendy definitely knows how to get out there and have fun with her Se, it doesn't seem to be her first priority. She also has a sharp mind, noticing how things are logically connected through dominant Ti. Finally, Fe might be her inferior type, which we especially see in Boyz Crazy, when she discovers that Robbie is manipulating her. Fe cares about the values of the group, which Wendy thought she and Robbie shared, and it was the last straw when she found out he was faking it. However, that behavior might also be a sign of dominant Fi, which would make her an ISFP. Do you think she's an ISTP, ISFP, or a different type?
Well, that's everybody that I had an idea for. Did I write all this when I was supposed to be writing something else? Yes. Whoops. But if we can start a nice friendly debate about GF MBTI types, then it'll be worth it!
(pls somebody nerd out with me)
