JOURNAL 3 SPOILERS AHEAD YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

So anyway, in the Journal, Bill possesses Ford for the first time by saying he can help him, that Ford can sleep while Bill takes over and helps out for a while. Ford does, and hours later wakes up to see that Bill did a lot of work with his body, and also feels as if he got a good night's rest.

BUT

In Sock Opera, one of the key components in defeating Bill is the fact that Dipper is sleep-deprived. The physical effects of being tired led to Dipper's body collapsing and driving Bill out.

So how could Bill in Ford's body, which was even more sleep-deprived than Dipper's, stay alert and productive all that time? How could it feel like he slept if only his mind rested?

After all, there are two types of sleep: the body sleeping, and the mind sleeping. They generally happen at the same time, otherwise you end up with sleep paralysis or sleep-walking. I guess Bill's possession of Ford could be counted as sleep-walking, and I would buy that if it weren't for the opposing details in Sock Opera, where physical tiredness played a large role in the plot resolution.

So what's going on here?

Bonus: if you ever have a hard time sleeping, remember this. Your body and your mind aren't entirely connected, and your body checks to see if your mind is falling asleep by sending it the urge to roll over (or scratch an itch, or whatever). Every time you roll over or move, you reset your sleep timer. In order to really fall asleep, you need to pick a position and stay there. Once you feel your body fall asleep (tingly limbs, feeling of lead blanket over your chest), you can nudge your overactive mind along by thinking "I am asleep" repeatedly.
