as the title suggests, i am going to do the merlin tag! not because anyone tagged me, but because rambling about my obsessions and forcing my opinions onto the people who read this book are the two things i do best :)))

1 | favourite character?

i mean. it has to be merlin, for so many reasons. for a start, his character development is incredibly well crafted; i wouldn't go as far as to say he was arrogant in the first season? i think it was almost (sadly) the peak of his pride for his gifts, co-existing with his clear struggle of being the village freak back in ealdor before being sent to fucking camelot of all places. back then he was so desperate to know why he had such strong magic, what it purpose was. throughout the preceding seasons, we see him develop his talents, saving arthur's life over and over, and he quickly switches from someone who is desperate for recognition to feeling no need for it at all. it's more that he just wants people (arthur) to see him for who he is and accept him, he doesn't care much for the glory. that's one of my favourite things about him. it also bodes well with the whole magic-being-a-metaphor-for-being-queer thing, which as a mostly closeted trans person resonates with me possibly more than anything ive ever watched? F U T H E R M O R E i really like the way the writers handled merlin's uhhhh mental well-being. he was a pretty happy kid in the first couple of seasons, but over the years you can see the weight of his destiny begin to take toll, and as a result i honestly think season three is the last time we see him truly happy. the darkest hour then happens, he loses lancelot, and although then arthur is king things are still shit, aren't they? by season five our poor boy is just sad all the god damn fucking time, with GOOD REASON, fucking druid prophecies. anyway, what i like about it is that it's realistic emotional development. yeah, it's not the main focus of any episode (except perhaps the sorcerer's shadow? sorta?), but the writers weren't like eh he'll be FINE it's not THAT BAD. i just think he has one of the most well developed characters in the show. that's why i love him.

oh my god ALSO they let him cry! fairly often too! when you would expect a normal human being to cry! it's alarming how rare it is to see male characters actually cry on screen but damn that is something they nailed with merlin.

but honestly guys, despite all that analytical bullshit above, colin is fucking gorgeous and i think that's enough justification for him being my favourite.

2 | favourite episode?

oh, fucking h e l l

okay i do have a definitive answer for this but let's talk through some honourable mentions first.

the moment of truth holds a special place in my heart. will is the first of the many people merlin loses and it hurts like hell YAY. hunith is a legend, but mainly i just love that merlin's friends do actually give a shit about him and that we get insight into his Tragic Backstory.

from season one also, we have the poisoned chalice, which i like because merlin has no sense of self-preservation and neither does arthur and it's lowkey hilarious??? also WHAT ABOUT GWEN KISSING MERLIN there romantic plot just DIED after that don't get me wrong i don't ship it but also??? merlin clearly wasn't NOT into it? and no one ever tells arthur which is such a missed opportunity can you imagine how that conversation would have gone, fucking king of camelot being told that his wife and queen kissed his manservant before him-

both parts of beauty and the beast were spectacular. very funny, uther literally had sex with a troll, i have no complaints.

although i have a,,,,, lot of bones to pick with season five (including the fact that overall i think the plot arrangement was bizarre), it did have some good episodes. a lesson is vengeance is so tense and yet, simultaneously, we have dragoon being an absolute fucking legend and saying all the feral shit that merlin is clearly thinking about twenty-four seven but holds back. and arthur actually says sorry to him because he gets blamed for trying to kill him! what! the actual fuck! a rarity.

hollow queen comes pretty near the top of my list for favourite episodes for - reasons; one, merlin's arms. we don't see them in full but oh boy, are they there, and they are,,,, wow guys. wow. number two. daegal is my son. he is clearly also merlin's son, as he sees a lot of himself in him. his death was nothing short of devastating, i honestly found it to be one of the most emotional? i think it's a mix of his last words and the fact that merlin looks so shocked and utterly defeated as it happens. number three. merlin gets poisoned. i get such a kick out of seeing merlin hurt, i am a sucker for such a breed of angst, meanwhile if someone so much as touches a hair on arthur's head i lose my shit. but yes, hollow queen is an amazing episode.

i guess i should include the diamond of the day. despite,,,, everything i fucking loved every single merthur scene, in particular the actual magic reveal, and arthur's preceding reactions to actually seeing merlin being a bamf for the first time. morgana's death scene is also pretty dope. ah also! it's implied that gwen also knows the truth which was bloody important to me because she takes it so well, no one can convince me she didn't lift the magic ban after SOMEONE went and fucking died. you may have noticed everything mentioned above falls into the second part of diamond of the day, and that's because i really didn't enjoy the first part lmao. merlin losing his magic felt, dare i say it, a little lazy? and i wasn't really a fan of anything that went down in the crystal cave oops, even though it was nice to see balinor again.

don't worry i will eventually answer the question Now onto my favourite season by MILES, season four. Urgh season four. Perfection. Part one of the darkest hour was great because it ends with merlin being on the brink of death all icy and thAT'S THE GOOD SHIT LADS. a servant of two masters is comedy gold plus arthur loses his remaining brain cells when merlin's shoulder gets shattered by that mace and then he goes missing for three days; the bar for arthur showing any sort of care towards merlin is low, but it's t h e r e. and finally, my actual favourite episode is sword in the stone part one. part two is also great because merlin kills agravaine and i could produce an entire essay about that scene, but part one wins because of that dumb ass spell merlin puts on arthur which takes away his will, amplifying the true himbo he is inside tenfold. tristan and isolde are goals, gwen and arthur begin to sort their shit out meanwhile cut to merlin in the background who is plotting and making up bullshit stories purely so his boyfriend feels happy and prepared enough to retake his kingdom wow definition of supportive partner amiright.

3 | most underrated character?

oooo that's a tricky one! i think it either has to be gwen, percival or elyan. here's the thing; as much love as gwen gets from the fandom (especially considering the popularity of merthur, you would expect more people to hate her even if it's wrong), her character gets a lot of shit she doesn't deserve i think. for a start, slut shaming her? no ma'am. but i think the main issue comes from her becoming queen. i would agree that the writers definitely should have focused more on her character during this time, and it definitely suffered because they didn't, but ultimately i think a lot of her progression does make sense considering the role she takes on PLUS let's be real she is a bad bitch queen and her interactions with morgana are awesome. despite this, i think percy deserves more love, because although he doesn't speak much he doesn't have a heart of gold which thank god because like, have you seen him? i would not want to be on his bad side. the reason i then say elyan is simply because people push him aside a lot lol. i like him! i wish he had lived :((( (his death angers me urgh.)

4 | favourite ships?

definitely merthur, that goes without saying. i personally think gwen had a lot more initial chemistry with lancelot (though who's to say it would have lasted if he had stayed in season two - we will never know), so i love the two of them together, and i (very) lowkey ship mithian and merlin? HONESTLY this is because i recently read a fic where they happened to be a thing and was surprised when i didnt recoil because i hadn't thought about it before, but it is sweet. also theyd look SO GOOD TOGETHER. oh, and perwaine because duh lol. gwaine or lancelot being with merlin is cute too!

5 | least favourite ships?

i don't like arthur shipped with anyone other than gwen or merlin. i have a love/hate relationship with merlin and morgana being a thing, it depends on the context, but for the most part ehhhh not really a fan. but mainly??? morgana and arthur because incest and YES I KNOW something STRANGE WAS GOING ON IN SEASON ONE but it died quickly and we don't talk about, they are siblings guys. siblings. then you have gaius and uther, which is just. wow. i think the one i hate the most though is uther and merlin. it's alarmingly common. i don't understand. i,,, why. why? stop. p l e a s e.

6 | least favourite character?

either kara or morgause. kara mainly out of resentment for the fact that a love interest was the thing that pushed mordred over the edge, even though it would have been so much more powerful AND honestly made more sense if it had been merlin's attitude towards him that made him SNAP. morgause because i just don't like her SORRY morgana may have been halfway over the fence but she manipulated her into "agreeing" to that sleeping spell and that does shit well with me.

7 | first thing you would do if you had merlin's magic?

THE THING WHERE HE READS NEARLY QUICKLY WITH HIS EYES CLOSED i swear he only did it once when arthur got bitten by the questing beast which led to him PANICKING but oh my g o d it would make college work so much easier.

8 | prefer canon or fanon ending?

hahaha ah yikes.

okay i'm not sure if this is referring to a specific fanon ending, which i guess would be kingdom come, or just anything fanon ending? but as much as i hate the canon ending,,,, i hate fics where arthur rises again more. NO HATE TO THE WRITERS. no hate, it's just not my thing, in my mind nothing can make okay the fact that merlin waits a millennium and a half for arthur's return. if we're specifically talking about kingdom come - which, for any of you that don't know, is a hypothetical season six written as 13 scripts, where arthur returns along with the knights, morgana and mordred and shit goes down - as much as i enjoyed it because they ARE fantastic i think it was a bit too extreme in the other direction for me lmao. i think the only thing i would actually change about the canon ending is arthur's death, because it's not the only tragic thing that happens. even if he had lived there were other loses. sometimes i think that it would have been more angsty if merlin had jumped in front of excalibur?? and then canon stays the same except their roles are reversed, and merlin would DIE which don't get me wrong would have been FUCKING AWFUL but like,,,, imagine if then arthur lifted the magic ban. and then it's like well shit i mean destiny achieved but also HOLY SHIT MY SON IS DEAD WHY. idk. i guess to answer the question i still prefer canon ending oof.

9 | least favourite episode?

easy, love in a time of dragons. it was the only episode i didn't enjoy during my first watch through because i didn't like alice AND i think giaus brushing off merlin in such as harsh way is so out of character for him.

10 | favourite magical creature?

OOOOOO NICE QUESTION. gonna have to go with the dragons which, i know, is a pretty boring answer, but come on. aithusa was fucking adorable. beside dragons i would say the dorocha but alas, i don't think they really count? do they? i mean, theyre really only spirits but idk man normal spirits don't just murder people like that.

let's say my answer isn't arthur, because duh. it would have to be lancelot, because no one can tell me he wasn't merlin's rock and that things wouldn't have ended very differently for everyone if he'd lived. gwen cared about him too! so much, forget fucking romance, the three of them would have had a wine group when she became queen where they would just shit in alcoves. lance and gwen would spill all the noble tea. merlin would update them on the servant gossip. gwen would rant about the council, and they would give her advice about upcoming policy changes. mostly though, merlin would try to steer the conversation towards talking shit about arthur and succeed. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT and WE WERE ROBBED.

12 | which character deserved a longer arc?

god gonna have to go with lancelot again because even though he was technically around for four seasons? he barely got any screen time as a knight and i really did want to see more of his relationship with merlin, and how he enabled all his Magical Bullshit.

13 | favourite antagonist?

either morgana because duh or surprisingly agravaine? he's slimy, he's aggravating, his clearly implied feelings for morgana are highkey creepy but lowkey sad, but you HAVE TO ADMIT he's not an idiot. his motive is fucked up and illogical, but at the same time i really liked there being a long time traitor in camelot? it was stressful and annoying but idk. i really don't know i just love to hate agravaine.

14 | opinion on kilgharrah?

urghh fuck. he was a little bitch before he tried to burn camelot to the ground. and i hugely blame him for making merlin so paranoid about morgana and mordred. b u t. i did grow to love him from season three onwards, and the final scenes he had with merlin were quite heartbreaking aha. the thing is, he makes some very good points sometimes but ultimately i think without his overall influence merlin would have better handled the prophecies he was shown and told.

15 | would you rather be a knight or a druid?

bro i hate the knights code (literally am writing an essay on that) but OH MAN give me a sword and let me fuck some people up please.

yes! he was. he was a good KING maybe not so much a good PRINCE but yaknow i'm not salty or anything.

i didn't enjoy how sometimes arthur would take actions for the purpose of thinking yes, this is what uther would have done. i hate that he's blind to how fucking awful he was as king, and as a human being. partly though that feels unfair, because i understand that he's his dad and he loved him, but at the same time he's his own person and can be very blind to his flaws. more things should have changed with his reign, i think. magic is of course the big one, and at first i was like shit, here we go again when he was willing to use magic to heal uther, being a hypocrite when it came down to it just like uther in the sense that he would resort to magic when desperate, but still thought it was evil.

that is somewhat true. but.

there were honestly an alarmingly amount of scenes MOSTLY in season five where arthur proved that he'd thought a lot about magic and whether or not it was truly evil. the problem was that those conversations always arose at the worst possible times, like the disir (i still can't wrap my head around how i feel about the decisions that were made in that episode oof), but still. there were times which heavily suggested that if merlin had played his cards better magic could have returned to camelot. i don't think arthur deserves praise for that though, having the potential to see magic users as yaknow, not inherently evil or murderous. because that sets the bar pretty low. yes, obviously it's wonderful, but ultimately. the law doesn't change. and even if it had, yes congratulations youre finally not blind with hatred??? I'M NOT TRYING TO BE THAT BITCH I'M REALLY NOT if arthur had legalised magic i wouldnt have wanted the follow up to be "ah yes congrats you understand basic human rights" but at the same time i also wouldnt have wanted him to be heavily congratulated or praised or anything for making a decision that should have, in my opinion, come sooner (because it never did come, did it?)

DID ANY OF THAT MAKE SENSE i really don't know but i can't be bothered to read any of this back sorry g u y s ummmm overall yes i do actually think arthur was a good king, especially when compared to uther and the monarchs of some other kingdoms.

speaking broadly, i am a total sucker for any season four rewrite. as previously mentioned, i absolutely adore season four, so making it gay or adding a magic reveal? oh fuck yeah.

many of said fics, and others, include arthur courting merlin. i'm so there for that shit! i also once asked my girlfriend what she thought would happen if arthur attempted to court merlin and we agreed that merlin wouldn't really get the memo that he's not supposed to court arthur back and then when challenged about it, it would turn into a competition of which the entire castle is eventually involved.

i really like it when merlin marries arthur and becomes a royal! when merlin's already a noble or royal i find it less fun because one of the things i wish they'd focused more on with gwen becoming queen was, yaknow, gwen actually adapting. to be the fucking queen. instead of a SERVANT.

hogwarts aus work for basically any fandom because duh harry potter, but particularly with merlin for obvious reasons, and there are some bloody good ones. this also includes the only form of reincarnate fic that doesn't make me shudder because i do not care for that shit at ALL

knight!merlin might be my favourite merlin though, other than fuck-i-married-arthur-now-if-he-die-i-have-to-run-the-kingdom merlin. i kid you fucking not, there are only 6 works on ao3 tagged knight merlin, but oh my god. the best one was where arthur finds out The Truth and is like hmmmm I don't really want you as my servant then and merlin is like fuck you at least make me a knight and it is GREAT

onto specifics; there is a football au i read that mostly occurs over twitter (hence its name, twitterature) and it is,,,, genius. i couldn't stop laughing.

much more famously there is the student prince, where arthur is like fuck it imma go the edinburgh and merlin is like shit shit shit prince i share a dorm with prince arthur and he's a fucking asshole but also,,,, am i in love with him?? best thing about this one might be the fact that there is still a lot of magic involved, and the heavy focus on the specifics of uni life at edinburgh university aha.

FINALLY (i know i know i am getting very carried away) i recently read a fic by the lovely CaffeinatedFlumadiddle where arthur goes undercover in the castle as a servant named arnold and MERLIN DOESN'T KNOW and it was BRILLIANT
