9 - I Remember Us

"What happened to you?"

At the sound of his brother's voice, Jungkook snapped out of his deep daze that he had been in since he had left the park, staring at his feet with each step that brought him back to his home. He lifted his head from the ground, catching Seokjin at his usual spot at the kitchen island with a bowl of what he assumed was some instant ramen.

"Oh, um" he swallowed thickly, diverting his gaze. "Nothing. I'll be in my room if you need me."

Seokjin said nothing, just watching his sulking brother climb the stairs that led to his room.

"What the hell is going on." he muttered.

His room door creaking open, Jungkook silently walked in with heavy steps and shut it behind him. He took a moment to lean against the wood, his head falling back as his eyes closed.

He let out a breath of air.

This couldn't be real.
This wasn't happening. I'm definitely dreaming.

With each passing day, it seemed like grasping his reality was only becoming more difficult. Every event was becoming more unreal than the other, and he was now reaching a point where he couldn't separate what was real from what wasn't.

She's being delusional
We're not breaking up, she's not going to leave me.
We're just going through a tough time now...

He wanted to make up every lie possible to make the events at the park less painful; The way she looked him straight in the eye and told him that they don't belong together anymore, less painful.

Because he knew with every fibre of his being, no matter how much he gave her the cold shoulder, no matter how much he blamed her over the past year and a half, he had never stopped loving her.

He just stopped showing that he did.

Jungkook didn't know what he was expecting by neglecting his own wife, but breaking things off was way beyond his thoughts. Having spent twelve years together now, with many happy memories and the hardships that they endured together, he couldn't envision life without her, and he believed that she thought the same.

His love of twelve years, the mother of his daughter.

But he was proven wrong.

She's just upset.
My family is back, this is a new start. I can make it up to her.
She's not going to leave me. She can't.

"Fuck," he groaned, his fingers slipping into his hair and gripping at the roots.

He refused to believe that they were going to part ways. They were going to fix things, he was sure of it.

The life they previously lived would be altered. The experiences they went through growing up, moving to Seoul together, would never come to be except for the ones engraved only within their memories.

They would never live together, marry, or have a daughter; All the things that had happened, everything that they dreamed to have once upon a time. And now he was watching them slip through his fingers.

At that point, her words did nothing but anger him.

She was really ready to give up on them that easily, and to accuse him of not caring about his own daughter.

He just wasn't expressing it as much as her, and with everything going on, he didn't know whether to be happy or not anymore. His emotions were all over the place.

Letting out a sigh, Jungkook pushed himself off of the wooden door reaching the centre of his room.

He had been in his childhood home for a few days now, and it still felt unreal. He'd often find himself staring off into space, getting flashbacks of certain memories that had happened within the four walls. But this time, his eyes caught the scattered photos taped to his wall right on top of his dresser.

He took slow steps towards them, a small unconscious smile spreading across his lips as he stared at a specific one.

December 20th 2018

"Y/n," he had called out her name a bit louder than usual, attempting to make himself heard over the loud booming music and flashing lights. She turned to him once hearing his voice, flashing him the smile that sent flutters through his insides.

He bit his bottom lip nervously, her friends' curious eyes on him too.

"Would you be willing to dance with me?"

Her smile only widened, her almond eyes turning to crescents as she nodded immediately.

"I would love to."

A sense of relief washed over him, his own grin mirroring hers at her response. Saying a few things to her friends, she placed her drink on their table, and stepped towards him, following him to the crowded dance floor filled with teens from their school. He then turned to face her, hesitating for a moment, but Y/n only stepped forward with a reassuring smile, placing her hands on his broad shoulders.

"You need to stop being so nervous, I'm your date for tonight, aren't I?" she giggled once he had finally placed his hands on her hips, her glimmering eyes staring right into his.

His cheeks flushed red, a nervous chuckle escaping his lips as they swayed to the slow song that had come up. Thankfully, it couldn't be seen with the dark and colourful atmosphere of their homecoming night.

"That's true, but I can't help it sometimes. I don't want to make you uncomfortable."

"If anything, you make me feel comfortable, Jungkook."

He smiled down at her, relieved. The last thing he wanted was her to feel uncomfortable around him.

"And I know what I was going into when you asked me to join you tonight. I would have been disappointed if you didn't ask me to dance."

"I would have been disappointed if you didn't accept."

Jungkook watched her giggle, admiring her glowing skin under the colourful lights and her curls that cascaded past her chest.

"You look really pretty tonight," he muttered without giving it a second thought, although she returned him a sweet smile, he still went on, "I mean, you do every day, but tonight you're extra pretty. Not that you need makeup to look extra pretty, that's not what I meant to say." his eyes were slightly wide now as he continued to ramble, "I mean you are extra pretty tonight, not just because of the makeup, and you don't need makeup because you're already beautiful, but it's your choice of course. Fuck, I don't even know what I'm saying-"

With a pair of lips now locked on his, his babbling had come to an end, his eyes wide as saucers. But feeling her plump lips move against his, he let his eyes flutter shut, his hands pulling her closer by the waist, stopping their swaying.
Moments later, the kiss was cut shorter than he would have liked, but they were both in need of some air. Neither pulled away, their foreheads resting against each other with parted lips and shut eyes.

"You really need to stop talking sometimes." she muttered only loud enough for him to hear.

This was the second time she had kissed him, and he hadn't realise that he had been craving for it this much.

"You seem to know how to handle it though." he spoke with a curve of his lip, feeling her slap his chest and giggle as she pulled away slightly, neither of them aware of the dancing bodies around them.

It was just him and her. He couldn't help but watch her in awe.

He swallowed thickly.

"I need to ask you something." he let out, watching as she listened to him expectantly, "but not here. Can we go somewhere more quiet?"

Once she had nodded her head, they made their way through the crowd and out into the open balcony of the banquet hall that remained undisturbed by the teens partying inside. He immediately noticed her shiver and was quick to slip off his suit jacket to place on her shoulder.

Y/n muttered a thank you, hugging the jacket around her.

"Is there something wrong?" she asked with worried eyes, patiently waiting for him to respond. Jungkook shook his head.

"Everything is fine, more than fine actually..."

"Then why are you nervous?"

Her question caught her date off guard, stopping the nibbling on his lip that gave him away.

"Well, you make me nervous, in a good way of course." he shut his eyes for a moment before taking a deep breath.

He wasn't going to ramble this time.

Or he could, and she could kiss him again, which he was more than open to. But as much as he would love it, this time he had to cut the crap.

He swallowed the lump in his throat, looking away for a moment to gather his thoughts as she stared up at him intently.

"You make me so nervous that my mind just kinda goes blank, and I start to feel these weird flutters in my stomach. My hands start to sweat, which is gross, I know." he ran his fingers through his hair, breathing out a chuckle.

"What I'm trying to say is that I've never really felt this way towards anyone. You already know that I like you, and I believe it's pretty obvious anyways, but um..." he took a breath in, avoiding his crush's eyes as she gazed at him with a soft smile, patiently waiting for him to finish. "If you allow me, if you accept, I would love to take a step further with you, and um, put a title to our relationship."

Squeezing his eyes shut for a moment, he breathed in, finally ready to spit it out what he had been wanting to for weeks now. He finally got the courage to lock eyes with her, his heart pounding in his ears.

"Will you be my girlfriend?"

Jungkook gently touched the picture hung on the wall of them standing together, his arm wrapped around her waist, with bright smiles plastered on both their lips while they stood in front of the homecoming banner.
It was one of the nights he could never forget, because not only was it one of the scariest, but it was the day he had made his future wife, his permanent girlfriend.

And that shit was terrifying

But if he had to, he would do it all over again, because that night had led to a very important someone, maybe the most important person he had in his life, to officially become a part of his world. And he wasn't just going to let her leave.
