5 - A Breath of Relief

"Hi, it's Jeon Jungkook. Sorry I can't come to the phone right now, but feel free to leave a message-."

That was the fourth time you had called him. The fourth time that he ignored you before rushing out of your home without another word.

You knew where he was going and why, but the fact that he left you behind without even bothering if you were coming or not stung in a way. It was almost as if he didn't care. And maybe he didn't anymore.

You stared down at the dark screen of your phone blankly, hoping that maybe any second his caller ID would come up to show any evidence that you crossed his mind even for a moment. That he didn't intend to leave you all alone in the crisis that you were thrown into, and that it was just the spur of the moment.

"Y/n? Honey?" startled by your mothers voice, you turned around to see her walking towards you from the kitchen. "Jungkook left his phone in the living room. I saw that you were trying to call him." she handed you the familiar black iphone eight that he once had, giving you a concerned look once seeing the trace of frown on your face.

"Why did he leave so suddenly? You've barely had lunch."

Nibbling on your lip for a moment you avoided her eyes as you tried coming up with an excuse. What excuse would 18 year olds give in the middle of summer? It had definitely been a while since you last needed to explain yourself to your mother.

"He forgot to complete an assignment?"

"Honey, school ended two weeks ago."

You blinked back at her knowing you were caught and had no other excuse to give her. You watched as the elder sighed.

"Whatever it is, I know there must be a reason for you not telling me. I just hope everything is okay between you two."

You let a small smile escape to reassure her, just like you had been for the past year and half.

"Everything is okay, don't worry."

Nothing was okay.

But she would never know that.

"What the hell is going on?" Seokjin's brows had drawn to the middle as he sat on the high chair by the island in the kitchen, the doorbell being spammed and the door about to literally be busted off its hinges at this rate.

"Hyung!" the faint sound of a familiar voice reached his ears as he finally stood and jogged towards the front door.

"Kook, what the hell-" his brother threw himself into his arms, almost having him topple over onto the floor with the muscle bunny that weighed more than him.

Forget why he was spamming their front door, why was he suddenly hugging him?

Wait.

Why did his shirt suddenly feel wet?

Finally getting the strength to push him off, Seokjin stared right at his younger brother who's eyes had reddened with tears streaming down his flushed cheeks.

"What the hell happened to you?" Jin's voice was filled with concern as he observed Jungkooks face, but the younger just pulled him into another hug while breathing in a shaky breath.

A breath of relief. One that could bring you to your knees with tears as nothing but happiness fills you to calm the whirling storm that had been there for too long. Way too long.

Jin, not used to his brother hugging him so tightly, awkwardly hugged him back.

Jungkook sucked in another shaky breath, letting himself ease into the comfort of his brother's arms. The ones that had been absent for what felt like forever. Ones that he missed only to finally be reunited with them again.

He was here. He was safe. He was alive.

"Did you break up with Y/n?" Jin finally asked, rubbing his brother's back who didn't fail to lose his grip on him.

No response. Instead he stood there for another minute.

"No offence bro, I know you're sad and all, but can you like, let me go now?"

Realising how awkward and sudden this must have been, Jungkook blinked back the tears that filled his eyes, and as much as he didn't want to, finally took a step back, sniffing and wiping the tears on his cheeks.

"Sorry, I just... got carried away,"

Jin was more confused than ever as Jungkook stood in front of him, clearly having a hard time controlling the flow coming from his eyes. But he was the older bro, and what was the point of being the older brother if he wasn't there for his younger sibling?

"Do you want to talk about it?" he asked sincerely as he placed his hands on Jungkook's shoulders. His lips only trembled, tears only welling up more at the warmth that finally surrounded him after being left amidst a storm within him for too long.

No matter what, he couldn't come up with something to say. Words felt impossible to say with the weight on his chest and the emotions that caused a whirlwind.

What was he supposed to say to him? Tell his brother how he came from the future and that the reason why he couldn't stop himself from crying was because he and his mother had passed away a year and a half ago?

His brother not only would laugh at him, but think he's crazy. He felt like he was going crazy, because this shouldn't be possible. His dead brother shouldn't be in front of him, searching for an answer from him.

Still not getting a response, Jin sighed, finally dragging his brother with him to the living room where they could sit down and talk, and at this rate, it looked like they would be there for a while.

His PS4 would have to wait.

"Where's mom?" Jungkook quickly asked, instinctively following his brother to the kitchen instead of taking a seat on the couch, only to watch him grab a glass of water for him.

"At work, you dummy." he replied, pouring a glass, and grabbing the tissue box nearby on the counter.

"Oh" he replied, following him back to the living room where they both took a seat next to each other.

Jungkook tried blinking back his tears. His heart felt like it weighed a ton, as if the weight he had been carrying for over a year now only got heavier as he was faced with the grief from then once more. The longing he felt, the loneliness and sorrow. It felt unbearable, until he started finding ways to make it less painful and bearable.

He had missed them so much. He felt like he was in a dream, and soon he would be waking up, but the quick pinch on his arm told him otherwise.

Jin gave him the glass of water.

"So tell me what's wrong."

Seokjin Oppa: Y/N IDK WHAT THE HELL YOU DID TO HIM BUT GET THIS MUSCLE BUNNY AWAY FROM ME

You blinked at the message that Jin had sent you, a soft smile spreading across your lips.

He was alive.

Seokjin Oppa: I LITERALLY CAN'T EVEN GO TO THE WASHROOM WITHOUT HIM FOLLOWING ME

Seokjin Oppa: HE WON'T EVEN TELL ME SHIT ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED

You stifle a laugh.

You had missed him and the great personality that he always had, bringing smiles to everyones faces the moment he stepped into a room.

His and your mother-in-law's death had rattled your family deeply, striking Jungkook the most. Which wasn't a surprise, but since then, nothing had been the same.

He hadn't been the same. Your family hadn't been the same.

The memories of the past year, the hurt and grief, it all came back to you for a moment, causing your smile to drop and leave a hint of sadness instead.

You wished that the car accident had never happened, because it led to more than just losing two great people in your lives.

Blinking back to the present, you sent him a message back, telling him you were on your way.

You put your phone onto the passenger seat next to you and started the engine of Jungkook's car which he had forgotten behind, clearing having decided to run around the block to get home instead while in a hurry. So in hopes of perhaps having a moment to talk to him, you told your parents that you were going to have a quick trip to his house to give his belongings back.

The car reversed out of the driveway of your home and onto the street before you put it back into drive and let the wheel pull the car forward.

Seeing the houses that you had grown up around, the trees smaller than your last visit, and the few people who took a stroll along the sidewalk, it sent you a sense of nostalgia that you hadn't felt in a while.

It felt like you were finally home.

One you had been craving for a while.

Memories flashed before your eyes the more you observed your surroundings, small tears pricking at your eyes.

It had been so long.

Too long.

"So, um, here we are!" Jungkook put his car in park right in front of your house and turned off his engine, giving you a big bright smile, which you couldn't help but return.

"Thank you for dropping me off, Jungko-"

"Wait!"

The sudden outburst had you halting your actions of pulling on the door handle. With a creased brow you watched him stumble out of his side of the car, and slam his door shut before jogging around the front of the car to your side.

He pulled your door open while slightly panting.

Swallowing your laugh in was a challenge that you quickly failed.

Grabbing your purse, you stepped out of the car, flashing him a soft smile.

"Thank you,"

"Of course-no problem-anytime,"

You silently giggle to yourself, wrapping your arms around your torso once you were hit with a gust of cool night air. But catching sight of the blush spread across his cheeks was enough to warm you up.

"Wait, you're cold, let me grab my jacket-"

You stopped him by grabbing onto his hand, your warm touch stopping him in his tracks immediately.

"No need, we're in front of my home anyways."

"O-kay," he slightly stammered, his cheeks flushing darker under the streetlights that illuminated his face, revealing his eyes stuck on your delicate fingers that held his rougher ones.

You bit back your giggle.

Seeing the nervous side of Jeon Jungkook was a whole new world to you. The guy who seemed calm and cool at school now stood flustered with the smallest trace of your touch. And it just showed how right your friend Jimin was.

Jeon Jungkook from math class indeed had a huge crush on you. And you couldn't help but find it adorable.

The only other time that you had witnessed him flushing this intensely was when he was asking you out for the first time about three days ago, out in the courtyard at lunch when he told you he had something urgent to say.

It was cute, and you were living for it.

You slowly slipped your hand out of his, a blush of your own beginning to arise as you returned to hugging your torso.

Jungkook swallowed.

"Thank you for letting me take you out. I hope..." he gazed into your chocolate depths for a moment, "I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did."

You smiled up at him, your eyes reflecting the street lights.

"I did. Thank you for tonight, and for dropping me off. I hope it's not too out of the way for you."

He immediately shook his head.

"No, not at all," he rubbed his nape, "I just live around the corner, actually."

A small 'oh' left your lips before silence fell for a moment.

You took a small step back towards your home, taking the silence as your excuse to get into the warmth of your home.

"Well, I better go in now-"

"Y/n?"

You stopped in your tracks, watching as he took a step forward, gazing at you.

"If you let me, I want to take you out again."

You immediately grew shy, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear as you smiled to yourself at the offer. Your heart was beginning to flutter, not in the sense where you're high on energy like you had been while on your date. But in the way where your whole face feels warm, and the pit of your stomach all feeling like a swarm of butterflies had erupted. It was the way that your mind and body come together to unconsciously answer his question for you.

"Of course you don't have to." he immediately continued while blinking and glancing elsewhere once you hadn't answered within the few seconds that passed. You tilted your head as he chewed on his bottom lip, avoiding your gaze.

"I-I really like you, and I want to get to know you more."

There it was, pink blossoming in your cheeks more furiously at his sudden confession, making it all the more harder to bite back your grin.

With your heart hammering in your chest, you reached out for his hand once more, in a way, missing his touch from earlier.

"I would love to."

His eyes trailed up to gaze into your brown depths, a grin spreading across his lips as his eyes turned to crescents.

"Really?" his voice was eager as he took a step forward, and you couldn't help but nod shyly with a smile.

"Thank you! I-Can I kiss you?" he blurted out.

Your eyes had widened in shock this time, the pink colouring your cheeks only deeping in colour. But before he could take back what he said out of embarrassment, you nodded, making his eyes grow larger.

Taking your nod as an answer, he hesitantly took another step closer to you, your heart beating faster as he leaned down and tilted his head towards your cheek and with a leap of bravery, you craned your neck to press your lips against his.

Jungkook's doe eyes flew open as his breath hitched against your lips, your free hand coming to rest on his cheek.

He momentarily pulled away, searching your eyes with parted lips, only to receive a smile of reassurance in return.

Then it was your turn to be thrown off guard as he pressed his lips against your this time, enveloping your pouty lips with his soft ones as your eyes fluttered shut to savour them. Your body eased against him with the warmth that he radiated, his hand that once held yours pulling you against him further by your waist instead as yours rested on his chest.

His heart was pounding. You smiled against him.

The house lights turning on caught your attention, causing the both of you to break away.

"T-that must be my parents." you mumble, his face inches from yours, your chests slightly heaving. "I should go,"

Swallowing, he let you go, a silly grin spread across his lips.

"Yes, of course," he took a step back, "I'll... I'll text you when I get home,"

You stood in your spot as be began walking back to his car with his front facing you.

" And maybe we can-"

"Jungkook-"

"Work out our next-"

"Jungkook-"

Your hand flew to your mouth as you watched him run into the fire hydrant in front of your home, nearly falling onto the concrete before catching his balance.

You breathed out a laugh.

"I'm alright!" the grin from before was still plastered on his face, making the situation all the funnier. "Good night, Y/n!"

"Good night!" you giggle back, turning on your heels and shaking your head with a smile.
