Chapter Four: Pine

"Mama! We've missed you so much!" She looked at them then started to panic. "Where's your sister?!" They looked away, unable to face their mother. "She, um, didn't make it. There was no food, and you were gone so long, and..." Pine began to cry. If she had lived just that bit longer, she might've made it. "No! She's still here! I can save her!" She knew she was gone, but the guilt on her face told Thorn that she thought she was responsible for her daughters death. They walked away as his mother sat down and stared at herself in a puddle. "Why wasn't I here? She could've lived!" Her mother scolded herself in the rain. Why wasn't he there for her? He was there, yet he let himself, Pine, his mother, and his sister down. He should've found some food. But she's gone now and there's nothing he can do about that. Suddenly he saw a grey cat rush by knocking him to the ground with so much force, he was almost knocked out. He faintly saw a small kit in the talons of an eagle. He was going to save this kit. He made a promise to himself, that he would save all the cats he could, even at the cost of his life. He raced past the grey she-cat and watched the kit fall into the lake. "I got you!" He dove in and grabbed the kit. He yanked her out and began warming her up. "Come on! Don't let me lose you too!" He licked her until she began breathing. "Oh thank goodness." He started wandering away as her mother came running over. "Oh Dove, I'm so glad you got away." Dove. Her name was Dove. He knew that he would see her again soon.
