Chapter 16: From Tension to Comfort

Jamie walked back toward the dungeon as the prisoners were escorted to their cells. She made it to Loki's cell, only to notice he wasn't alone, so she decided to let it play out.

Loki watched as the prisoners filed into the dungeon.

"Odin continues to bring me new friends. How thoughtful," Loki replied sarcastically.

"The books I sent, do they not interest you?" Frigga asked.

"Is that how I am to while away eternity? Reading?" he wondered.

"You know Jamie is here. She's kept you company, has she not?" she questioned.

"She has. Which means I do not require the books," Loki replied with a hint of a smile from the first part.

"I've done everything in my power to make you comfortable," Frigga remarked.

"Have you? Does Odin share your concern?" he asked.

She didn't reply, giving Loki the answer to his question.

"Does Thor? It must be so inconvenient, them asking after me day and night," Loki remarked.

"You know full well that your actions brought you here," Frigga stated.

"My actions? I was merely giving truth to the lie that I've been fed my entire life. That I was born to be a king," he said.

"A king? A true king admits his faults. What of the lives you took on Earth?" she asked.

"A mere handful compared to the number that Odin has taken himself," Loki answered.

"And what if Jamie was there?" Frigga remarked.

"She would be the only one I would spare," he defended.

"Your father--" she started.

"He's not my father!" Loki yelled, losing his temper.

"Then am I not your mother?" Frigga asked.

This made Loki hesitate. Jamie felt it and she was waiting to hear his response.

"You're not," he finally answered.

Frigga forced a smile, but tears formed in her eyes as she stepped closer to him.

"Huh. Always so perceptive about everyone but yourself," she stated.

Loki was starting to feel regretful. He stepped forward to place his hands on hers, only for him to realize it was an illusion. She disappeared then Loki felt a presence near his cell.

"Didn't anyone tell you it's rude to eavesdrop?" he said.

Jamie came into full view and when he saw her, the sight took his breath away. But then he remembered that she must have heard everything. He bowed his head as she entered his cell.

"How much did you hear?" Loki asked, not meeting her eyes.

"Enough. I am grateful that you would've spared me in the invasion, but Earth has more to offer than you think," Jamie answered.

He looked at her, gently took one of her hands, placed his other hand on her cheek, and said, "I don't know what it is about you, but I'm seeing things differently because of you. You are the only reason I won't try to take over Midgard again. I do wish to rule, but it's not worth it if you are harmed in the process."

Jamie smiled in his touch as she let her forehead rest on his.

"By the way, you look ravishing in Asgardian clothing," Loki commented.

Jamie giggled and responded, "Thank you. We don't hear the word 'ravishing' on Earth that much."

"Why does that not surprise me?" he smirked.

They both chuckled and decided to read.
