"Roman! Lauren! Come inside please!" Patton called for his son and his son's best friend from the back door, watching the two kids look up from the bugs they were playing with at the end of the garden. "Why?" Roman whined back, "you said we could stay out until sunset!" He complained, Lauren not wanting to go back inside either, the two adored playing outside.
"You need to! Quick!" Patton replied sternly but worriedly. Roman and Lauren sighed and pouted but did as they were told, while running across the garden they yelped when a sudden clap of thunder rumbled throughout the land but that was odd, it was a bright, sunny day without a cloud in the sky.
It could only mean one thing.
The two kids sprinted inside, Patton closing and locking the door quickly behind them. "C'mon, downstairs" he urged, leading the two children down to the basement while Logan - Patton's husband - called Lauren's parents to explain to them she was safe and would be returned home as soon as possible.
Quickly the four were in the basement, door locked, deadly quiet.
They prayed the heroes would be able to save them, they usually do, haven't failed yet but still - there has been casualties in the past.
They all lived in a village quite far out from any cities or towns, it was a nice, welcoming village, everyone knew everyone else and usually it was always civil and friendly. There have been arguments and fights in the past but nothing can stay peaceful all the time.
However living in villages came with the downsides. The world was run by heroes, three women and two men, all with their own unique super power. To be born with magic powers was rare, usually never going upwards ten across the entire population. People who lived in villages or small towns were more vulnerable to attacks from the villains. People born with powers raised by the wrong people.
Sometimes magic holders are kidnapped as babies to be raised to be villains which is why if a baby is born with powers they are taken from their families and kept safe. The heroes would agree with it, they still get to see their family while also being protected - they would much rather it than being easy to be kidnapped. They were all adults now and could care for themselves, especially when they were all together.
To the worlds knowledge there was only one current villain but he was good at what he did. Probably the best in awhile. He had trained on his powers all his life experts say, which is why he is better than the heroes in one on one fights but when the five of them are against him? It's a different story. He can defend himself but it's difficult. He's better but that doesn't mean the heroes are rusty.
The villain had powers consisting of being able to control thunder and lightning - he could also teleport long or short distances without seemingly needing a break.
The world was lucky to live in a time where only one villain existed, but still, this villain was dangerous and whenever he was near everyone hid inside, locked up and daren't move until they got alerts that it was safe and the villain was gone.
"Why is he here?" Roman whispered to his dad who cradled him close along with Lauren who buried her face into his chest.
"I don't know, Kiddo" his dad whispered back, kissing his head. "Just stay quiet, okay? Try and sleep" Roman nodded but he knew he couldn't sleep if he wanted to. He wasn't scared per se, a little worried but definitely more excited than anything. The villain had come here a few times but hadn't actually done...anything yet, hasn't tried to hurt anyone, rob, steal. He just appears, teleports around a bit, then disappears as if he wasn't there.
Everyone flinched when another clap of thunder roared across the land but thankfully no lightening.
Roman shifted off his dad's lap so he could comfort Lauren who quietly began to cry, he sat beside his father who wrapped an arm around his shoulders. Roman silently appreciated it.
Time passed by slowly, they all swore by the time it was over at least two hours had passed. They got the alert on their phone and Logan took Lauren home quickly while Patton and Roman waited for his return. It was still risky to leave home straight after an attack but Lauren's parents were worried sick and they'd feel terrible keeping her there any longer. Plus she was starting to get antsy, she wanted her parents.
And that was their life. Nearly all of it living in a nice, calming village - only rarely would the villain try something but all he does is...looks around. At least that's what they see through the security cameras. He just wanders the street, seemingly searching for something using a device no one can make out. Not even experts know what it is, the heroes desperately want to find out but they can never catch him.
A year passed since the villain came for a visit, it was Roman's sixth birthday and he was currently celebrating in his back garden with all his friends from school. There were tables full of snacks, parents talking with one another and children playing games set out for them - most of them messed around in the bouncy castle though.
It was probably the best birthday party Roman ever had, but unfortunately something...happened.
His parents invited his whole grade from school, including the kids who Roman didn't really like but he didn't interact with them. They were sorta bullies, as bad as a six year old could be, but still hurt Roman whenever they could.
"Hey, loser" one of them called to Roman who turned around to face them sharply, glare in his eyes. "Remember this?" The second one pulled out something from his pocket, it was a DS, Roman's specifically, they stole it from him at school but Roman never told his parents for they told him not to bring it in.
"Give it back" Roman hissed, trying to snatch it from them but they pulled it away with a mocking laugh.
"You can have it if" the second kid smirked, "you cross Firefly Bridge" and Roman tensed, taking a step back. That certain bridge was out of bounds from everyone, it crossed over a deep revine where a lake used to flow through but it long dried up. If one falls down chances of survival are highly unlikely. Unfortunately due to rough weather during last winter the bridge was damaged and broke, it would take awhile to fix and no one has gotten around to doing it yet.
Crossing it was straight suicide but the boys taunted Roman, used his insecurities and stripped him down until the poor boy couldn't do anything but agree.
They easily slipped away from the party, the two boys laughing to each other while Roman followed after them quietly, fear bubbling inside his stomach. His mind screamed at him to turn around and go back to the party, who cares about a stupid DS? But he hated when his parents were mad at him, plus if they found out he lost it he wouldn't get another one as easily.
Plus the kids worked him up, he always prided himself on being brave, so when they mocked him and called him 'chicken' over and over again sue him for being enticed.
They made it to the bridge pretty quickly, it was on the outskirts of town, barely any houses nearby. Tape crossed the entrance to the bridge, stopping anyone that might try to cross it, giving them a warning to stay clear. It was the same on the other side which didn't lead to much other than a thick forest that used to be a popular picnic spot before the bridge was ruined.
"Cross to that side and back, you can have your DS if you do" the first boy pointed across the bridge, smirking at Roman who gulped and stared at the bridge fearfully. Underneath the bridge was rotten wood that had fallen from where it was broken, laying in pieces at the bottom of the revine. There were gaps in the bridge and it leaned to the side but there was a direct pathway in the middle - one side to the other.
Roman looked towards the two boys who began to make chicken noises. Scrunching up his face into a glare, Roman clenched his hands and walked towards the bridge, his bravery and confidence completely faked but he not only wanted that DS but he wanted to prove those bullies wrong. He wanted to be better than them.
Taking in a breath he ducked underneath the tape, taking an unsteady step onto the bridge which instantly creaked under his weight but other than that didn't move.
Taking another breath Roman slowly began to cross the bridge, holding tightly onto the railing to his right, keeping his eyes glued to the wood he walked across and not the deep fall beneath him. The boys kept taunting him, telling him to go faster, telling him he wouldn't make it, etc, it only fuelled Roman on, determination surging through him.
And...he made it. He collapsed to the grass on the other side, backing away from the bridge to have long, steady breaths. The fear and panic swarming through him was enough to make him cry but he couldn't - he needed to be seen as strong.
"C'mon slow-poke!" One of the boys called, bursting into laughter afterwards.
Roman glared at them and stood up, he supposed following the same route as before was his best option so holding onto the railing he did just that. However his luck seemed to run out halfway across the bridge...
When he heard a heart-stopping snap and echoing crash from behind him he instinctively stopped, looking over his shoulder to see the flooring behind him crashed to the ground. The boys were quiet now, watching with wide eyes as Roman began to panic, tears welling up in his eyes.
He tried to move forward but let out an ear-piercing scream when the floor underneath him broke suddenly, leaving him dangling in the air, holding onto the railing as tightly as he could.
"Help!" He cried, trying to pull himself up but he just couldn't. The bridge was crumbling, snapping, falling apart around him. "Help please!" He begged, as loud as he possibly could but the boys were gone, running back to the party to tell the adults what happened - they were too scared to do anything else.
"Help me!" Roman cried out again, his hands slipping from where they gripped to the wood too large for his hands to entirely wrap around.
"Please help me!" He screamed as loud as he could, tears pouring from his eyes.
But it was too late, no one could've made it in time, even if they were currently running over after the two boys told them what happened. Roman had slipped and was falling through the air, scream echoing off the walls of the revine.
The last thing he heard before the world went black was a loud crack of thunder.
