Roman looked both ways across the pathway, frowning in disappointment when he couldn't see an ice cream van parked where it usually is. He was excited to buy his favourite - which only ice cream vans actually do - and today he brought along some change! But of course, it wasn't here, and he began to walk across the path dejectedly, wondering if it would be there the next day.
It wasn't much of a hassle to get here, he walks home from school and it was just a slight detour from his usual route, besides by going this way he had a great view of the ocean, the sun sparkling against the surface just right, orange buoys bobbing along, with even a few boats floating on by.
It was a calming scene and Roman stared at it for quite some time, a simple smile on his lips. He glanced forward to make sure he wouldn't step on anything when his eyes caught onto two men walking his way. Assuming they'd pass by, he stepped to the side, with earphones in he couldn't hear them, but noticed one of them gestured to talk so slowly he plucked it out, assuming they'd ask for directions when his eyes landed on a badge that was pinned to their chests.
He forced his face not to scrunch up. They were Christians. Which wasn't a bad thing - he has never, ever been against religions - but he was sure they were going to preach to him about God and faith if he went along.
"Hey!" One of them chirped with a bright smile and sparkling eyes, Roman smiled back, a tight lipped one, the man looked cute, he'd admit that much. The two were the same height, both dressed in neat clothing, ties hanging down their chests, the one who talked being cute, while the other was definitely quite hot, he had a burn scar across one side of his face, but Roman didn't mind - he found things like that to be cool.
"Can we ask you a question?" The chipper one continued, Roman inwardly winced, he wanted to go home, really, and text his boyfriend to see if he'd be free for the afternoon, but he felt kinda awkward - he didn't want to outright say no and carry on, they seemed young and might be persistent.
"Oh, sure" Roman agreed, smiling. The man brightened up further at that, pointing to his friend who smiled, too. "D'you think my friend'll look good with pink hair?" Roman drew his eyebrows together, that was the question? That would seemingly 'break the ice'? He sighed, realising he might be here for awhile.
"Yeah, of course" he agreed, he did like dyed hair, some styles looked really, really awesome. He himself had dyed red hair. "Really? See, I told you!" He nudged his friend who chuckled then pointed at him, "what about him and blue hair?"
Roman nodded in agreement, "yeah" was all he could really say. He was quite the extrovert, he could talk to strangers without hesitation or worry, but he really wanted this conversation to be over. He just came searching for some ice cream.
"Well, I'm Patton" the chippy one motioned to himself, "and this is Deceit!" He then pointed to his friend who lifted his hand in a slight wave. "What's your name?" Roman opened his mouth, but hesitated, alarm bells ringing in his mind. Stranger danger. "Hamilton" he blurted randomly, relaxing when they seemingly bought it.
"Cool name, Hamilton!" Patton grinned, then put emphasis on his badge. "We work with the church - are you religious yourself?" Roman shrugged a little, glancing to the side - was it rude to say he wasn't? No, why would it be? Could he outright say he wasn't, though? He deflated a little - where did this sudden anxiety come from!?
"No, not really" Roman shrugged, which was a grand mistake, however he was sure whatever he responded with wouldn't have really changed the outcome. The two went into a spiel about faith and all this, asking Roman question after question, he answered as incorrectly as he could, keeping any truths about himself out of reach to whoever these were. He was only fifteen, he didn't want to reveal anything personal.
And then they asked a question which made Roman tense.
"We should stay in contact! D'you have Facebook? Or Twitter?"
Oh, gosh, this was starting to go to places Roman did not want it to go. "No, I don't..." he drifted, while he very much did have Twitter, he definitely didn't want these two to be able to find it. "Oh, that's okay! What about your number?"
Roman stared at them in silence for a moment - do they not realise that's not a question you ask a young teenager!? Especially if you're an adult in their late twenties? Roman gets it, they want him to become faithful, transition to religion, but he didn't want to, he never gave away he wanted to, so why can't they drop it and let him go?
As Patton asked this, two men walked by, one wearing black clothes (even under the sun) with dyed purple hair glanced up at gave the two a weird look, then looked at Roman who shrugged lightly and smiled to show he would be alright. The man subtly nodded and continued on with his friend, sometimes glancing over his shoulder but eventually dropping it.
"Ah, er, stranger danger" Roman chuckled awkwardly - Disney! Would they let him go already!?
"Oh, that's okay! We can give you ours!" Patton insisted and Roman sighed silently, watching as they wrote it down on a piece of paper and handed it over to him. "Thanks" Roman smiled awkwardly, they all shared goodbyes and Roman scurried along, but as he walked away he noticed a car driving down the road, he knew that car, it belonged to a family friend - Logan.
As he drove by, he rolled down his window, leaned out the car and yelled;
"EVOLUTION!"
Before driving away. Roman snorted and hurried on home, phoning his boyfriend to tell him all about it with a smile - heh, he wondered what'd they say if they knew.
