Patton smiled at any of the teenagers who turned to glance at him as he walked across the school parking lot to get to the front doors. They didn't pay him much attention, he was just a parent going to school for their child - nothing new. They all quickly turned back to their friends.
Although he was smiling it was mostly forced, worry churned up inside of him due to why he was called into school. He was informed Roman was involved in a fight between two students, unfortunately the fight occurred across the large field behind the school - the teachers couldn't possibly get there in time before any of them inflicted injuries onto the other. Patton just hoped he was okay.
When entering he walked up to reception and told them why he was here, he only had to sit down for a minute before Virgil was hurrying down the hallway, opening the door stopping adults getting into the rest of the school (if they weren't a teacher) with a badge he may have stolen but it was just sitting on the teacher's desk, he'd replace it later.
"Dad!" He called, Patton standing up to pull Virgil into a hug, kissing the top of his head after he buried his face into his chest.
"Are you okay, kiddo? What happened?" He asked gently, sitting down with Virgil taking the spot beside him. "Roman he...he got into a fight" he explained, holding onto his dad's hand tight, Patton didn't hesitate to hold back and squeeze his hand reassuringly.
"Why?"
Virgil chewed his lip and looked to the ground, "I'm..not supposed to tell you" he eventually whispered which made Patton draw his eyebrows together in confusion, "what do you mean?" Now he was really worried, what were his children keeping from him?
Virgil sighed, "Logan made us promise not to tell you and if you ever need to know that he told you, not us" he explained, not daring to meet Patton's gaze. It's been years since he lived in that facility but sometimes he still got surges of anxiety because of the abuse he endured in there - he hated lying to his dad or keeping secrets or anything that might make him mad just in case he...did what the carers did. Deep down Virgil knew he'd never hurt him but his anxiety told him otherwise.
"Okay, Kiddo, it's okay. Where is he?" Patton soothed, curling an arm around his son.
Before he could answer the door opened again and a girl sprinted through, skidding across the floor in front of Virgil who smiled softly up at her. "Jesus Virgil!" She exclaimed, "don't run off like that! Especially right now" she hugged him fiercely for a moment before turning to Patton with a polite smile, panting slightly from the run she just made across the school. Her hair was in a messy bun atop her head, some strands completely fallen out but she didn't seem to care much - it was stark blonde in contrast to her deep brown eyes that analysed Patton for a moment.
"You're Virge's dad, right?"
Patton smiled, "yep! Patton" he introduced, still with one arm around her son.
She nodded, glancing over her shoulder quickly. "I'm Violet - it's not my real name but I'll never use the name given to me by a facility" she spat the word like it was a curse and Patton glanced at Virgil in surprise, she had two thousand seven hundred points which would make Patton believe she was from the middle facility yet she still seemed to despise it. Patton didn't ask incase it made her uncomfortable or angry just thinking about it.
"D'you know where L is?" She then asked Virgil who shrugged, "he left when Roman started to get involved" Violet nodded and looked over her shoulder again, "we should go find him" she concluded, eyes averting to Patton who looked worried sick.
"Don't worry" she reached out and placed a hand on his in comfort. "He's fine-they're both..." Violet looked to Virgil for a moment, "...fine" but she didn't sound convinced. "You can see Roman now" she gestured to a teacher who was walking through the hallway, "she'll take you to him, we have to go Virge" she urged the boy up and without another word from either they left through the front doors to get back to the school playground without bumping into the teacher who came in a few seconds later, eyes instantly landing on Patton who stood up, nervously fidgeting with the cardigan around his shoulders.
"Patton Ambrose?" She asked and he nodded quickly. "Is Roman okay?"
She nodded quickly, "he's perfectly okay, just bruised up a bit, his nose did bleed but it isn't broken so don't mind the dried blood" she reassured before leading him down the long hallway, walls covered with photos of school trips and artwork done by students, plus many awards the school seemed to be proud of for they were dotted around everywhere.
"In here" she opened the door to the nurses office, revealing Roman who was sitting on the bed, glaring at the nurse who tried to look at his eye but he seemed persistent that she left her alone.
"I said don't touch me!" He snarled, ready to smack at her hand but when he saw Patton from the corner of his eye he turned to him fully and relaxed, jumping off the bed and hugging him tight. "Can I talk to him privately for a moment?" Patton asked the teacher and nurse who both nodded and left the room, closing the door behind them.
"She wouldn't stop touching me!" Roman instantly accused, leaning away from his dad to thrust his arm in the doors direction. "I told her not too!" He added, glare in his eyes. Patton silently led him to the bed, helping him to sit on it again as it was lifted up from the ground.
"Kiddo, she only wanted to help you - she's the nurse after all" Patton tried to explain but Roman was still very against human contact. The only people who could touch him being his brothers and Patton. Scars from the facility still lingering quite prominently.
"It's okay, they know they're not allowed" Patton sat beside him, gently tilting his head up to look at his eye, the skin around it was red and already darkening into a bruise. "You should be fine" Patton murmured after a moment, "but what happened, Ro? Why did you fight them?" One look at his points Patton knew they lowered from eight hundred which he also knew must upset Roman immensely, they celebrate each milestone and reaching eight hundred made Roman so happy. He's only two hundred away from one thousand but due to trauma from the facility and his anger issues it's taking longer than it did for Virgil and Logan. Plus he started off so low.
"They wouldn't leave Logan alone" Roman glared at the ground, gripping the edge of the bed. "He won't let us tell the teachers he-!" Roman cut himself off, quickly shaking his head. "He made me promise not to tell you..." he added as a whisper which only made Patton more desperate to know what he wasn't being told - he knew he had to talk to him but first he found a cloth, ran it under some water and gently cleaned away the dried blood underneath Roman's nose, every so often giving him a kiss on the forehead and a gentle caress of his cheek to show he wasn't made and still loved him very much.
Roman didn't make it verbal but he appreciated it very much - Patton knew this from the way Roman settled down and even smiled slightly, his points ticking back up a few.
"I'm proud of you for sticking up for Logan" Patton began once Roman was cleaned up, "but violence is never the answer, okay? Always get an adult involved, promise me? I don't want you getting hurt" Roman frowned but nodded, the two shared a hug which ended with smiles after Patton encouraged him.
"C'mon, where's that smile?" He cooed, Roman rolled his eyes fondly. "I'm not a kid..." he murmured, trying to hide the growing smile. "Aw! There it is, my handsome prince has a smile that'll make the world swoon" he giggled when Roman shyly ducked his head, the fifteen year old even began laughing along with him.
"I know that, papa" he replied confidently and Patton ruffled his hair affectionately.
When the teacher heard laughter she slowly opened the door, Roman stopped smiling and looked away moodily. "Would you like to follow me to the principles office?" She asked but it wasn't really something to be answered with a 'no', so he nodded and took Roman's hand, the boy following beside him while glaring at anyone who dared to glance in their direction. Roman didn't exactly have many friends but he had a few close ones who tried to get involved in the fight but Roman pushed them away - he didn't want them to get hurt.
"Roman!" One of the exclaimed, a boy named Mickey who was waiting beside the principles office for Roman. He rushed up to the boy, looking at his face closely. "Dude! That was sick!" He then grinned, Roman smirked too. "You fucking destroyed them! They're gonna be pissed" Roman shrugged it off as if it were nothing, still holding his dad's hand without a care.
"Eh, whatever, I'll do the same if they try anything" Mickey lit up at that which made Roman chuckle.
"Mickey! The bell rang five minutes ago, get to class!" The teacher ordered when she noticed him. He rolled his eyes without her able to see, earning a snicker from Roman.
"See you tomorrow, Ro!" Mickey called while running down the hallway, ignoring the teacher's demand for him to slow down.
"Kids" the teacher whispered with a shake of her head.
"You better not do the same, Roman" Patton eyed him and he pouted, "I won't, I won't" He begrudgingly agreed, smiling again when Patton poked at his sides.
They entered the office to see the principle behind his desk, two boys sitting in chairs with their parents beside them. They both looked ruffed up too, similar bruises as Roman who smirked in their direction. They sat down in the remaining seats and the principle quickly spoke up.
"As you can see-"
"He stared it!" One of the boy's pointed at Roman who didn't say anything in return, just squeezed his dad's hand. Something that kept him calm when he didn't have his stress ball. "We'll get to that in a minute" the principle shot him a look which made him shut up, slumping in his seat annoyed.
"I called you in due to a fight which broke out between your kids. As Roman hasn't shouted out yet" he pointedly stared at the two boys who both glowered in his direction, "and hasn't glared at me - Roman, will you tell us your side of the story, please?"
Roman sent one more look in the boy's direction, turning back to the principle. Patton waited in anticipation to hear what actually happened but was shocked with what Roman said instead, "I don't like them"
Even the boys looked surprised but didn't say a word.
The principle cleared his throat, "you started a fight because...you do not like them?"
"Yep" Roman replied, "that's it"
He shot a look in the boy's direction, they knew this was a free pass, they also knew if they retold their side of the story it would admit them for who they really were - bullies. And why they were bullying Logan in the first place.
"Oh.." the principle looked between the parents, "that settles it then. Roman, three days suspension, if I hear any trouble between you three again it will double" Roman nodded and left before anyone could say anything more, Patton quietly apologised to the parents, too deep in thought to stare them in the eye before he left the room too, finding Roman leaning on the wall, staring off into the distance.
"That's not what happened" Patton called out his lie quietly, crossing his arms. Roman sighed, "you'll understand" he dismissed and grabbed his dad's hand, taking him down the hallway towards the doors leading to the field out back. As soon as he opened them Violet came rushing through, crashing into Roman but splitting from him a moment later.
"Roman!" She seemed happy to see him, but even happier to see Patton. "Patton! Oh forget Roman, I need you" she sent a wink in Roman's direction to show she was joking, giggling when Roman held a hand over his heart and stared at her in mock offence.
"It's Logan" she was serious again, "he's having a panic attack and Virgil can't calm him down, they're over there by that tree" she pointed to the only tree in the field, a little ways away from the line of trees at the direct end of the field. "Thank you, Violet" Patton quickly broke out into a run to get to his son, Violet and Roman followed but didn't get too close, they didn't want to surround the boy who was panicking severely.
"Lo, please, look at me" Patton heard Virgil beg when he neared, rounding the tree he gasped when he saw Logan curled up in a ball, rocking back and forth while sobbing. Virgil was sitting in front of him, trying to get his attention but nothing was working.
"Dad!" Virgil exclaimed, grabbing his hand, "please help him" he begged and Patton nodded, ushering Virgil to stand with his brother and friend, kneeling before Logan who was muttering quietly to himself between his sobs - now that Patton was nearer he could hear it But was unable to make out whatever he was saying.
Crawling beside him he curled his arms around the boy, hugging him close to his chest.
"Logan, Kiddo" he whispered close to his ear, "can you hear me?"
Between Logan's shaking and sobs Patton could make out the small head nod, "okay, good, you're safe Lo, I'm here, I've got you, just let it all out, take as long as you need" Patton murmured ever so gently, avoiding being too loud incase that worsened his state. Logan nodded slightly again, slowly unwrapping his arms from his legs to return Patton's hug, hiding his face in his chest where he cried into harder, Patton periodically pressing kisses to the top of his head.
Awhile later Patton looked up to see Violet and Virgil had left, he assumed to get to class before the teacher's would start searching for them. Roman was still there but was sitting down further up the field, giving them space but still close enough.
Logan slowly calmed down his sobs but his breathing wasn't doing any better, so Patton moved onto the breathing technique, telling Logan to breathe in, hold it, and let it out - he did it himself so the boy had something to follow along to which helped him greatly.
Half an hour since Patton first found him Logan was finally calm enough to talk, he was exhausted, still shaking with a few remaining tears but other than that he was okay.
"Lets go home, Kiddo, then you can tell me everything" Patton reassured, helping him up to his feet. Roman stood up two and was by Logan's side in seconds, bringing him into a hug which Logan returned a moment later, hands shaky as they clutched the back of Roman's jacket.
"They'll think twice about hurting you again, Lo" Patton managed to make out and his heart clenched in his chest.
After signing both boys out from school they waited inside Patton's car, the day didn't have much left of it and only a few minutes later did the bell ring.
Virgil and Violet originally went to walk home but when Virgil spotted his dad the two hurried over.
"Logan!" Virgil opened the car door and hugged him quickly, the warn out boy able to hug him back tiredly. "Fuck, don't scare me like that again, please" Virgil whispered and this time Patton relented from telling off his language.
"Stay safe, L" Violet sent him a smile and he managed a small one in return.
"Do you need a lift, Violet?" Patton offered, there weren't enough seats but he was sure one of them could sit in the middle. She hesitated, glancing at Virgil who nodded encouragingly.
"Uh-sure"
She sat in the front while the three took the back, Roman in the middle where the cup holders and little storage hole was but covered with a pillow from the trunk.
Violet luckily didn't live too far away, she shared a hug with Virgil who got out to sit in the front before hurrying up to her house, calling over her shoulder for him to text her when they arrived home which he promised to do.
Once home, Roman and Virgil waited downstairs in the living room while Patton took Logan up to his room. As they aged the children slowly parted from their shared room, Logan was first to go as he had basically made another room his own after the original didn't have enough space for his school work - Roman and Virgil carried on sharing for awhile until they were both sure Virgil would be fine on his own.
Roman got the original room while Virgil split off into another one. Roman's room lost the two spare beds leaving him with the biggest room in the house - just smaller than Patton's.
They sat down on Logan's bed, Patton holding his hand tightly.
"What happened today, Kiddo? You can tell me anything, I promise I won't be mad" he eased him quietly, gently drifting his thumb across his knuckles. Logan said in silence for awhile, eyelids heavy, frown etched onto his face. He knew he'd have to tell his father eventually, whether it be now, tomorrow, or next week - Patton was a worrier and would want to know eventually.
He sighed, slumping down even further if possible. "Those two boys Roman attacked bully me" he explained quietly, knowing he could leave it there but at this point he didn't care, he didn't want to live with someone who might never talk to him again if he told him later on in life.
"Bully me because I am gay"
Patton blinked, almost unable to catch what he said but he did and now he could see why Logan seemed so hesitant and why neither Virgil or Roman told him.
"If you won't accept me tell me now, I cannot deal with lies. Spend me back if you must, just know Roman and Virgil won't be too happy" he added after Patton didn't respond.
"Oh, no, Kiddo! I'll never send you back" Patton quickly curled an arm around his son, "how could I? I love you, Logan, you being gay doesn't change anything. You're still my son" and Logan leaned into him in relief, worries he had held over the past few months when he discovered his sexuality easing off his shoulders, leaving him finally able to relax.
"Is this why you've been avoiding me?" Patton then asked quietly and Logan closed his eyes guilty. "I'm sorry, Father, I-..."
"Shh, it's okay, it's okay" Patton promised, "although we're going stargazing tonight, promise?"
Logan leaned back and smiled gently, "that sounds...great, father"
Patton brushed his hair from his face, a smile growing on his lips. "Can I tell you a secret?"
He nodded, "I'm not straight either"
Logan's eyes widened in surprise, "really?" He whispered and Patton nodded. "Yep! I like everyone" he grinned and Logan let a small smile slip onto his lips.
"I feel silly for worrying now" he admitted but Patton shook his head. "Don't be, I was worried to come out too but my parents accepted me - what they didn't accept was me adopting low-point children but it was the best decision of my life" and Logan was smiling again, the two sharing another hug.
After that Roman found it much easier to come out too, a week later telling Patton he was bisexual. It took a little while longer but Virgil came out too, due to this Patton decided to have a 'coming out' party, it was a surprise for all three boys - with Violet's help they invited all of Roman's and Logan's friends (who already knew) Virgil only had violet but honestly seemed quite happy with just one best friend.
The party was definitely a surprise but one well welcomed, often Violet would take Virgil somewhere quiet when he needed a break from sitting in a room with so many people but even still it was a great day which ended in the biggest sleepover all the children ever had. Patton didn't sleep much due to how loud they were but honestly he didn't care, he let his children have their fun.
And as they years passed their points only grew and grew, Patton watched them all age into adulthood and he couldn't be more proud of his children who all went onto do great things. Logan became a scientist (just as Patton predicated), a great one at that - while his work did take up a lot of his time Patton treasured the moments they had together, Logan enjoyed them as much as he did and wouldn't allow himself to be away from Patton for too long.
Roman pursued his dreams to become a famous actor, it started off rough and rocky but with much encouragement from Patton he managed to get a lead roll in a popular play which jumpstarted his career, allowing him not only to perform in broadway but even in a few movies - even still he would always prefer to do musicals on stage in front of an audience.
Virgil knew from a young age what he wanted to do and made sure he got that job, working in a facility. Not the one with high-point children, not the middle one either, but the low-point children facility. He couldn't bare the thought of children going through what he and his brothers did so he made sure to treat every single child with love, care and compassion which only made their points rise whenever they were around him. He hated seeing them not get purchased but still, under his care they didn't feel so alone, lost, unloved - and Virgil was content with that.
They all adopted kids in time, Virgil being the first. He had met twins who joined the facility at a very young age and he fell in love - making sure no other carer got to treat them knowing they'd do a half-assed job. He wanted to give them everything and when their points began to rise he couldn't help but feel excited and immensely proud - he adopted them on their seventh birthday and they loved him as much as he loved them, already calling him dad before he adopted them.
Roman was next, after meeting the love of his life both decided to adopt. It took a little persuasion from Roman's part but after his husband understood what he went through in a low facility he decided it would be best to try and save a child from that Hell.
They decided on four kids, they wouldn't allow themselves to be adopted separately and Roman along with his husband were more than happy to have them all. When news broke out that Roman Ambrose adopted a low-point child people were confused, sent him hate for it but many people looked up to him for it and there was actually a surge in low-point adoptions across the country which couldn't make Roman more ecstatic.
Logan adopted a low-point child with his boyfriend too, they had dated for a few years but decided against marriage, neither saw the point and it was quite expensive. They adopted a girl (as they didn't think they'd be able to manage two children just yet) with low points and she quickly warmed up to her two dads, points raising just like that.
Truly, all a child needed was parental love, guidance and acceptance.
And all the children looked forward to seeing their grandad.
