Roman was sitting peacefully on a bench, slowly flicking through a book he had picked up from the library recently. He doesn't often read but he does find it quite relaxing from time to time, besides he adores jumping into fantasy stories and these books are the perfect thing to get his mind off of the real world for a short period.
Usually he likes to spend time in the park nearby the orphanage, it was beautifully kept, everyone in the city made sure of that (well, mostly everyone), it was heartwarming to see groups of people tidying up the place whenever it would accumulate litter or leaves would start falling from trees - Roman often joined in with a group of his friends, most of the time only there to jump on the leaf piles.
Today, though, something different happened - his eyes were caught by a movement on the path before him. He assumed it to be a person walking by but when he realised it was a toddler stumbling around with tears welled up in his dark brown eyes Roman quickly darted to action. He put his book in his satchel, swung it onto his shoulder and caught the toddlers attention.
"Hey there" he smiled, kneeling before the boy who looked up with glossy eyes and a trembling lip. "D-dada-!" He cried, "dada? You want your dada?" Roman filled in for the child who nodded hurriedly and made grabby hands towards him. Roman found him utterly adorable, with black dungarees and a soft blue top on underneath, and cute matching shoes.
Standing, he scooped the boy up and balanced him on his hip. Roman often helped look after the younger kids in the orphanage, so he knew what to do to keep the baby happy while also hurriedly searching around for his parents.
Cutting across the grass, he passed through a row of trees, spotting two adults running madly across the field, calling out a name over and over.
"Virgil! Virgil, Kiddo! Where are you?"
Roman looked down at who he assumed was Virgil, watching as his eyes lit up when he saw the two male adults, making grabby hands towards them now, eyes once again filling up as he began to make soft cries.
"Hey, hey, lets bring you to them, yeah?" Roman shifted Virgil up higher and rushed over, catching the attention of one of the men, he wore trousers and a dark blue polo shirt. His hair was combed neatly over his head and he had black rimmed glasses adorning his face.
"Oh, Virgil" he sighed out in relief, hurrying over and checking him over, then calling over (Roman assumed) his husband who had a few tears skimming down his cheeks at the thought of losing his son. "Oh, Kiddo!" He cried, scooping Virgil from Roman's arms and cradling him close.
Baby Virgil didn't mind, he wrapped his small arms around his dads neck and cuddled into him. "Don't run away like that again, Virgie" Patton demanded, but kept his voice from going too strict.
"Thank you for finding him" the more professional looking man turned back to Roman who beamed and waved it off. "My pleasure, I'm Roman" he struck out his hand and the man shook it, both gripping the others hand strongly. "Logan - where did you find him, exactly?"
"Oh" Roman turned and pointed in the direction of the path, "he was waddling by as I was reading. He's an adorable fellow" Roman cooed at the boy who hid his face in his dads shoulder.
"Thank you, again, Kiddo - can we repay you in anyway?" Patton then asked, running his hand up and down Virgil's back, taking a few steps closer and allowing Logan to lean over and press a soft kiss to Virgil's temple, resting his hand on his head for a moment. Roman thought the whole scene to be so heart warming he felt like he could die then and there.
"No, no!" Roman declined, "like I said, it's my pleasure, I'm glad he crossed by when he did" Roman reached forward and gently tickled his side, grinning wider when Virgil let out a string of giggles, kicking his legs playfully. Both Patton and Logan smiled down at their son who calmed down moments later, plump cheeks flushed.
"He usually doesn't like strangers" Patton commented, urging Virgil to look up at Roman who waved, holding onto the strap of his satchel with his free hand. Virgil hid his face again but not without sending Roman a slight smile.
"Are you with anyone?" Patton asked, looking up at Roman who shook his head and brought out the book he was reading. "I like to read here on my own - it's a wonderful way to destress" he waved the book about a bit, noticing Logan seemed to have a sudden interest so he handed it over for him to read the cover.
"It sounds interesting" Logan nodded, "it's a series - this is the third book, I'm really enjoying it, all the action packed fantasy a guy like me would ever need!" He let out a giggle, taking the book back once Logan had finished reading the blurb. Logan hummed thoughtfully, making a mental note of the book's name.
"Well, I should be going" Roman said after checking the time, "the orphanage'll worry where I am! Bye, you two love birds" he joked, then poked Virgil's side again, "goodbye to you too, Virge" with that, he twirled around and headed back up to the path.
"He's a sweet boy" Patton commented once he was out of earshot. Logan nodded in agreement, then turned to Virgil who shyly watched Roman walk away, thumb hanging loosely between his lips.
The next day after school, with all of Roman's friends being busy he had nothing else to do. He could've stayed inside the orphanage and play with the kids but the staff insisted he went out on a fine day such as this, so with his favourite camera and satchel, he stepped out into the world, deciding to go for a walk in nature.
It didn't take long to find the pathway, and almost instantly he was surrounded by trees, bushes and gorgeous flowers. Roman sighed wistfully - why didn't he do this more often? Lifting the camera to his eye, he snapped a few pictures here and there, the sound of the city becoming impossible to hear as nature filled up his ears - birds chirping, water running, bushes rustling - Roman was a content boy.
He passed by the odd few strangers on the walk, but he didn't mind. Two young girls even asked if he could take a picture of them with the sun setting perfectly behind them. Roman handed them the picture once it printed, shared thank you's and your welcome's before they went their separate ways.
Roman adored moments like those - sometimes the human race wasn't that bad.
He was nearly out for two hours when he decided enough was enough. Taking the shortcut off the beaten path and through the trees (which he knew off by heart now) he pushed by vegetation and climbed over fallen trees to reach the entrance/exit of the walk.
What he didn't expect was to trip over the body of a small toddler. He stumbled and collapsed to the ground, luckily keeping the boy out of harms way. With a groan, he sat up, quickly checking over his camera and sighing in relief when he realised it was okay apart from being covered in dusty dirt.
"Oh, gosh! Are you okay?!" A familiar voice asked from above, he rolled onto his back and brightened up when Patton's face came into his view. "Oh, Roman!" He chirped, helping the teenager up and dusting off his clothes with Virgil in the arms of Logan who appeared, too.
"Wonderful to see you three again" he commented with a chuckle, poking Virgil cutely, "especially you, even if you caused a tumble" Virgil giggled around his thumb, watching Roman with wide, curious eyes. "Oh, Virgie, what're we gonna do with you, huh?" Patton tutted playfully, kissing his forehead before turning to Roman again.
"You sure you're okay?"
Roman nodded, gesturing down to himself. "Practically perfect in every way" while Patton grinned at his reference, Logan stepped up and changed the subject.
"By any chance to you know how to get out of here? Patton somehow convinced me that it would be a great idea to leave the pathway - we have been lost for an hour" he side eyed his husband who giggled and hid his face behind his son's body, eyes peeking over his shoulder, all the while Virgil grinned at his dads.
"Sorry, Logy! But you forgot your phone!"
"You told me not to—" Logan closed his eyes and sighed, looking at Roman. "Do you?"
Roman had smiled at the whole exchange, "of course - follow me, you three" he then turned and carried on his way to the exit, starting up conversation with the couple.
"Are you new here?"
Patton nodded, "yep! We moved in a few weeks ago. We heard it was a great place to raise a child" as he said this, Patton lifted Virgil higher, the boy tilting his head curiously, not understanding what he meant but smiling anyway. "Oh, it is - he crime is minimal and the parks are splendid" Roman grinned at Virgil who glanced at his dad, then slowly, slowly reached for Roman who held his hand between his finger and thumb, watching with glistening eyes as Virgil's mouth parted, eyes watching closely as Roman lifted his hand up and down slowly, squeezing it gently before letting go.
Virgil breathed in, stared at his hand then up at Patton and Logan who both chuckled in amusement. "He really isn't like this around others, not even his aunt" Patton turned to Roman who shrugged and pulled a wider smirk, "what can I say? Everyone loves me!" He then did a twirl, showing off himself in full. Logan rolled his eyes fondly while Patton laughed and agreed with the sixteen year old.
"Will you get home in time?" Patton then started to worry, hoping they weren't slowing him down. "Oh, they're used to me ignoring curfew - they'll call if they get worried" Roman patted his pocket where his phone rested, then noticed how the sun beams hit against the couple fucking gloriously.
"WAIT!" He suddenly yelled, the two stopping suddenly, Virgil making a little squeak of alarm.
"Don't move" he continued, bringing up his camera. The two quickly realised what was happening, Logan moving closer to Patton who beamed. Virgil understood too, burying his face in Logan's shoulder, a small embarrassed Kiddo.
"Perfect" Roman smiled, taking the picture and handing it to the couple who looked at it, eyes widening in astonishment. "Woah, Ro! That's awesome!" Patton complimented, Roman waved it off and they carried on, starting up mundane talk about the city and where the best restaurants were, etc.
"Ah, here we are!" Roman suddenly declared, rushing forward to the gate which he held open for the couple.
"Oh, gosh! Thank you Roman! We didn't think we'd ever escape" Patton handed Logan Virgil before whisking Roman into a tight hug. The boy didn't expect it at first, but relaxed and hugged back quickly, a smile growing on his face. "We would have gotten out eventually, but yes, thank you, Roman" Logan added on, shifting Virgil to be more comfortable.
"I should go before they call" Roman smiled at them all, reached forward and tickled Virgil who giggled and slapped at Roman's hands with as much strength as a toddler could muster. "See you around, Virge" he then bowed to the couple, "Logan, Patton" he smiled, turned and left, waving at them all from over his shoulder.
Virgil reached at his retreating figure, making a noise of disapproval, looking up at his dads who eyed each other questioningly.
A few days later Roman found himself in a Starbucks, waiting for his order while entertaining himself on his phone. It was a Saturday and he was debating to ask if his friends wanted to hang out or if he wanted a quiet day to himself. His week had been quite stressful, with an abundance of homework (most he hasn't even done yet) and hassle from a few teachers, he doesn't know if he wants to let loose or buckle down and not be bombarded on Sunday.
While having his inner debate, he completely missed his name being called, but apparently it didn't matter as someone grabbed it for him.
"I think this is yours" a deep voice broke him from his trance. Roman looked at his drink in the man's hand, "oh, thank you-" the rest of his sentence died on his tongue when his eyes met with the man's. Gulping thickly, Roman pocketed his phone and hastily took the drink from his hand.
"Dad, hey, uh, nice to see...you" Roman stammered a little, eyes staring at the ground, unable to keep a gaze locked for too long with him. He was an intimidating man. "Ditto, kid, now, listen" Roman's entire body tensed when his dad threw an arm around his shoulders and led him outside the cafe. He had no other choice but to follow, not wanting to agitate the man who was known for his anger issues.
"I'm in a little bit of a tight spot" he began to explain, leading them to the alleyway behind the building. Roman gulped again, hands clasping his plastic cup tightly now, wondering what the Hell his dad was about to do to him. Once they were out of sight from the street, his dad let him go and took a step back, that smile on his face, charming enough to get away with murder. Roman despised it but didn't make it obvious. He sometimes wishes he was an actual orphan.
"And you'll help your old man out, won't you?" He asked sickeningly sweetly, Roman knew if he didn't agree the consequences would be worse than anything he would actually be asked to do. "Sure" he agreed, forcing on a smile, "what can I do to help?"
And that's how Roman ended up standing out in the beating sun, selling fresh lemonade and homemade cupcakes. The best way he could think of to gather so much money in such little time. His father needed five hundred by the end of the week for, Roman was sure, his drug related business he had going on (Roman didn't want to know anything more) and he sometimes used his son when he needed extra cash.
It sucked, it really did, now Roman had no time for his homework and was sure to probably be castrated by his teachers. Either way, his father would literally castrate him, so he put on a smile, poured lemonade and handed out cupcakes.
Later in the day, he came back from inside with a new batch of cupcakes, sweat dripping from his skin and clinging to his clothes but he didn't care, he cleaned his face with a rag and pushed on, counting and re-counting the money he had collected. Close to a hundred.
"Ooo! Cupcakes!" A cheerful voice piped up. Roman lifted his head and grinned earnestly when he saw Patton, Logan and little Virgil toddling between them, arms up, holding his dad's hands. "Hello, Roman" Logan greeted, making Patton gasp, finally noticing the boy who chuckled, he apologised, too caught up with the cupcakes.
"It's alright! I think Virge is a little distracted, too" Roman teased, leaning on the table and down at Virgil who had wide eyes as he gazed up at the cupcakes. "Can we have three, please?" Roman nodded to Logan's question, taking the money and slotting it into the money box. He would give them it for free but this situation was a little awkward to do so.
"How about some lemonade? The cups are one hundred percent recyclable" Roman lifted one of the paper cups with a grin and eyebrow wriggle. "Yes please!" Patton enthused with a mouth full of cupcakes. Logan tutted, sending him a look which made him flush and close his mouth.
"Newton - it is like living with two kids" Logan sighed out, paying for the drinks too while Patton giggled and Virgil fumbled with his cupcake.
"It's a really hot day - how long have you been out here?" Logan asked once receiving his drink, handing one to Patton and holding onto Virgil's. "Most of the day - I go inside to grab more cupcakes" Roman responded, noticing how Logan's eyes changed with concern. "Well, keep yourself hydrated" Roman nodded with a smile, everyone turning to Virgil when he made a cry.
The cupcake he tried to remove the wrapping from has fallen to the ground and now tears were pooling in his eyes. "Oh Kiddo, it's okay" Patton bent down and picked it up, quickly throwing it into the bin not too far away while Logan picked him up and gave him some of his own.
"Here, here" Roman picked up another and handed it over. "On the house"
"Are you sure?" Patton asked after coming back, kissing Virgil's temple and drying his eyes with his sleeves. "Positive" Roman beamed, watching Logan remove the wrapping and hold the delectable to Virgil's mouth as he learnt forward and took a bite. His face lit up and he took a few more before Logan moved it away, telling him to chew and swallow what he already had first.
"Thank you, Kiddo" Patton smiled sincerely, then reached into his pocket and brought out a few notes. "A tip for being so kind" he giggled, putting the money on the box before Roman could protest. "That's very kind of you - thank you" Roman tried to smile but it wobbled, he felt guilty, they didn't know where this money was going to. However, they didn't notice, and carried on like nothing was wrong, which shred Roman up inside, but he couldn't say anything.
"We'll be back later, if you're still outside we will force you back in, mister - staying out in this heat all day isn't good!" Patton quipped and for a moment Roman felt like he was being cared for by a dad.
"I appreciate the concern!" Roman called as they walked off. "Stay hydrated!" Patton called back, nudging Logan afterwards, grinning widely at the man who taught him all of that. Roman watched them go with happiness gleaming in his eyes - they were such an amazing couple. With an even greater child.
Roman packed away his stuff before Patton and Logan came back, he would admit he was very fatigued and felt the need for a nice, cold shower. The next day he decided against setting up his stall again, instead he stayed inside and did some homework, well, all he could do before it began to frustrate him to a point where he literally screamed in frustration and flew his math book out of his window.
Resting his elbows on his knees, he held his head in his hand and sighed out. Stressed. He was too stressed. This wasn't fair. He escaped all this stress when he was taken away from his dad - it's all coming back. He needed something, anything to help him destress.
Quickly grabbing his camera, he left the house, finding his book halfway in a bush. He sighed and put it inside his satchel, walking down the street and towards the walk through nature when his eyes landed on a person at the end of the street. Tensing, he made a mad dash around the corner and down the street, making sure he wouldn't be seen by the man - his dad.
He kept walking, speed walking, really, every so often glancing over his shoulder incase he was being followed. He took the long route back to the orphanage, not wanting to accidentally bump into his dad-
"Roman?"
"aHH-" he yelled, whirling around, panting heavily while whoever called him rushed up and placed his hands on his shoulders, soothing voice filling his ears. "Hey, hey, sshh, it's just me" Patton whispered, pulling the shaky boy into a hug. "What's wrong, Kiddo? You seem jumpy" he then commented, rubbing a hand up and down his back.
"Nothing, nothing", Roman breathed out, relaxing in the man's hold. "I'm fine" he reinforced, even sending Patton a smile. He wasn't lying, he was fine now, as long as he wasn't alone. "Okay, I believe you" Patton rubbed his arms before taking a step back, "what brings you out here?" Patton asked, beginning to walk, so Roman happily followed along side him.
"Needed to destress" He admitted, holding up his camera. "School work can really effect me so, even I, Roman Kingsley can be defeated" at this Patton laughed, nudging his shoulder into the boy's playfully. "I doubt that - hey, Logan's really smart! I'm sure he'd love to help out" Patton enthused, lighting up at the mention of his husband.
"Really? Are you sure? Oh, Patton, that would be amazing!" Roman gushed and the two hurried on to Patton's home. It was a lovely one story house with a cute garden filled with children's toys. The windowsill had flowerpots hanging from them ands a few fake animals were stuck to the walls. It looked like something straight out of a fairy tale. Roman loved it.
"Logy Bear!" Patton called, hearing the sound of Virgil's laugh from the living room. While Patton walked to the house, Roman neatly took off his shoes, sliding them on the rack, then hanging his jacket on a hook. Inside the house was very cosy, with pictures on the walls consisting of Patton, Logan, Virgil and other family members (Roman presumed).
There were a few small ornaments here and there, but the most prominent being the cute, small animals on the walls. Like outside the house, but these were smaller and less frequent. Still, Roman found it to be adorable.
"Come in here, Ro!" Patton called so Roman did so, head appearing around the doorway to see Virgil sitting before the fireplace (that was currently not on fire, but had a metal frame before it) on the carpet, playing with a few toys.
"You needed help with some homework?" Logan questioned, rising from the couch. Roman nodded and pulled the book out of his satchel and, a few hours later, the two had finished all the work Roman needed to complete for the week and he felt like he could cry out of pure joy - now he could solely focus on the money and not have to worry about school.
"Thank you, Logan, this-this" he choked up, hastily clearing his throat and grabbing his things. "I hope I can repay you-"
"Oh" Logan dismissed, "that won't be necessary" he then noticed Roman's state, "Are you alright?"
Roman nodded a little too quickly, smiling a smile Logan didn't believe. "I should be going, thank you again, you and Patton are lovely hosts" with that, he gave Virgil's side a little tickle, smiling for real once hearing his adorable laughter before he rushed out the house and down the pathway.
"He left quickly" Patton commented, "I was gonna offer him dinner" he then frowned, Logan closed the door and frowned, too. "He seemed off" and Patton agreed.
Each day Roman would find different ways to make money, his most prominent being selling lemonade and cupcakes and taking people's dogs for walks. He did car washes, cleaned people's garden, even did chores around the orphanage so they would pay him in return. He was a determined young boy, and knew he could get five hundred at the end of the week if he tried. He was close, really close, and probably just had to do a few more car washes.
"There you are, kid, you're a hard one to find"
Roman tensed, whirling around to face his father who strolled up with his hands in his trousers. "So, where's the money?"
Roman's eyebrows drew together, "what? You said the end of the week" Roman responded, his fathers eyes darkened and he drew back. "It is the end of the week"
"It's Friday!" Roman responded, "I-I thought I had till Sunday-!"
"So, you don't have it?" His voice dropped to a dangerous low, Roman knew what that meant, from the years he used to live with this man. Digging around in his satchel, he handed over the money, shakily watching his dad count and count. "Fifty more, kid"
"I don't-I don't-give me one more day-"
"What's this?" His dad cut him off, grabbing the camera he saw glistening from inside his bag. Roman's eyes widened, "wait, no, please-!"
This time his dad took a step back, and from that look Roman knew he wouldn't give it back. "Is everything okay?" A sudden voice disturbed them both. They turned to see Patton looking confused but with a protective streak running through his eyes, Virgil tucked securely in his arms.
Roman swallowed, glancing at his dad wordlessly. "Nothing to be concerned of, just hanging out with my son" his father smiled a smile that would make everyone believe he was telling the truth. Well, apart from Patton, apparently, who didn't look convinced.
"Roman" He then turned to the boy, eyes sparkling. "Did I ever tell you about my friend? He's been with me and Lo since childhood, and he's a really good liar, told us all the tricks of how to catch a lie" as he said this, he side eyed Roman's dad who lost his smile, clutching the camera a little tighter. "And I could've sworn Roman lived in the nearby orphanage" Patton then continued, and for a moment Roman didn't feel so scared. So helpless.
"Watch it, we wouldn't want anything to happen to him, now would we?" His dad gestured to Virgil and in that moment Roman felt anger burn inside of him. Taking a step closer, he took a protective stance before Patton and Virgil who clung to his dad tight, watching everything happen with a half hidden face.
"We wouldn't" Roman responded lowly and his dad looked surprised, then smiled again, stared at his son with a look that said 'this isn't over' before he turned and stalked down the street. Once he was out of eyesight, Patton turned to Roman, his demeanour changing instantly to one of worry and concern.
"Kiddo? Who was that? Are you okay? Did he hurt you?" Roman smiled a little at his abundance of questions, rubbing Virgil's shoulder gently to help soothe him. "Everything's fine, he is my dad, however..." Roman glanced away, "there's a reason I live in the orphanage" Patton nodded, chewing his lip for a moment.
"C'mon, I'll take you home" Roman nodded and followed Patton to his car where he strapped Virgil in the back seat, allowing Roman to sit in the front, the boy tapping his thigh continuously as his eyes scanned the area. He was worried, Patton could tell, but in all honestly he was worried, too.
If didn't take long to arrive at the orphanage where Patton parked on the street before it, "wait, before you go" he reached into his pocket, "incase you ever need any help, we can swap numbers, if you want?" Roman smiled at that, feeling a warmth blossom through his chest.
"Thank you, Patton" with that, they made contacts for each other, Roman waved to Virgil and left the car, Patton watching him go up the drive.
"Dada?"
"Yeah, Virgie?"
"Is Ro hurt?"
Patton frowned, hands tightening on the steering wheel. "That's what I'd like to know, Kiddo"
Thankfully, after that meeting Roman didn't see his dad for awhile. It seemed he was busy with his own life again, still, he was on edge whenever he left the orphanage, even when he was in school or with his friends - he kept an eye out, just incase he'd appear randomly, it's usually what he did, mostly when he needed money. Ah, who was Roman kidding? Certainly not himself - he only came for money, he didn't care about his son.
A week later Roman was at the park, sitting on a swing while reading from his book. He was almost finished with the third one, excited to finally move onto the fourth. As he flipped a page, a clearing of someone's thought caught his attention, he tensed, for a moment imagining it to be his dad but when he noticed it was Logan he calmed down and smiled, smile broadening when he noticed a book in Logan's hand - the first book of the series.
"Thank you for the suggestion" Logan gestured to the book. "It is certainly a good read"
Roman beamed, "I told you! I'm basically a book expert" Logan snorted, then took a seat on the swing beside him. "Patton has been meaning to find you recently. He recounted to me what happened with you and your dad"
Roman nodded slowly, closing his book. "Patton feels guilty about what happened-"
"What?" Roman cut him off in surprise, wondering why on Earth Patton would feel personally bad about what happened - none of it was his fault. "Let me finish" Logan responded and Roman nodded, turning on the seat more as his interest was piqued. "He felt guilty he didn't try and help you get your camera back" Logan explained then took a bag that was on his back off his shoulders, placing it on the floor before him and unzipping it.
"He has made me carry this around whenever I leave the house - if you do not take it now I will force you to" he then sent him a look which said he was joking, making Roman smile but gasp when he realised what was in his bag. It was an expensive camera from what he could tell, another polaroid one so whatever he captures will print off instantly.
"Logan" Roman whispered, delicately taking it from his grasp. "You didn't-you shouldn't have-" Logan cut him off with a quick shake of his head, gesturing for Roman to keep it while he closed his bag and swung it back onto his shoulders somehow in a professional manner. Roman didn't know what to say, this was too much, right? He couldn't accept this, could he? What did he do to deserve this? Nothing that he could recall.
"Thank you, Logan" Roman spoke sincerely, then had a sudden idea. Bringing out some film he had left over in his bag, he turned on the camera and brought it to life while Logan watched curiously, he had never been interested by camera's but he's always for learning new things. "C'mere" Roman stood up so Logan did, too, allowing him to wrap his arm around his shoulders and pull him close, "say Roman's the best!" He called with a grin, snapping the picture quick.
As it printed off, Roman laughed at Logan's exasperated expression but hidden amusement in his eyes. "Thank you again, Lo" Roman packed the camera away carefully, pulling the satchel onto his shoulders. "It was no problem" Logan took a quick survey of the park before turning back to Roman, "as a matter of fact, you can do something to repay us back"
"Oh? Do tell" Roman encouraged, he wouldn't mind doing anything for the couple who have already done so much for him. "You could come around tomorrow for dinner - Patton enjoys cooking meals and would love to make you something" at this, Logan noticed Roman lit up like a Christmas tree, nodding his head hurriedly, so fast Logan worried he might hurt himself.
"I would love to"
