It will never work - Remy x Emile

"Are you excited for your first day in school?"
"I would be if we were actually walking to a school" Remy responded to their mom, glancing around the train station they walked through to get to the 'brick wall' they've been told so much about while they were growing up from their older siblings. They were also told many times to never let a muggle know who they were and what the wizarding world was - yet they were about to run through a brick wall surrounded by muggles?
Whatever, they weren't about to judge.
"You're just grumpy because you don't have any coffee" Remy's mother grinned, ruffling their hair. Remy didn't respond, for she was right, and carried on pushing this heavy-ass trolley in silence while they headed towards the brick wall. When they neared, Remy could see other children around their age running through with other family members, watching as they disappeared without so much as a disturbance from the world around them.
"Okay, Rem" their mother placed her hands on her child's shoulders, vision gazed directly at the wall. "Just run on through, I promise you won't crash" she grinned and gave him a reassuring pat on the back. Remy nodded, breathed in, made sure no one would run at the same time and dashed on through, looking around the blackness surrounding them before they appeared on a completely new platform, right beside them was a train, black and red, with steam rising from it's side.
When they looked up at the sign, they saw it read 'Platform 9 3/4' which reminded them of math, which made them shudder, but then they remembered they don't learn math at Hogwarts and smiled. Suddenly, they felt their mothers presence beside them and looked up at her with a timid look.
"Don't worry, Rem, they'll take good care of you"
Remy rose their eyebrow at this, "didn't a bunch of children get murdered awhile ago?-" their mother quickly hushed them and urged them along the platform, murmuring 'we don't talk about that' into their ear before dropping the conversation completely.
When Remy was about to board with their ticket, their mother hugged them from behind, placing a kiss to the top of their head. "Let's hope you get into Gryffindor" she whispered before smiling and gesturing him to go on alone. Remy sighed at the suggestion; their family was basically entirely Gryffindor apart from the odd few, and those 'odd few' aren't talked about. They couldn't care what house they were in, as long as they could make friends and not be criticised for something they can't control. Like the entirety of Slytherin, for example.
They got onto the train and left their cart in the storage carriage, walking through the slim passageway [whatever it's called the hallway you walk down to get to different places to sit alright!] to find an empty carriage to sit inside of. They squeezed past students young and old, avoiding pushing them too much so they wouldn't make any enemies before arriving at the damned school.
Finally, they found a place empty and headed in, sitting on the seat on the right side, close to the window. They were surprised no one else entered and suspected everyone already had their own places, but when the train began to move, a voice caught their attention. Looking towards the doorway, they gazed at the student who looked back with a smile.
"Hello! Do you how do?"
Remy cocked their head to the side questioningly, the boy merely giggled and headed on in, sitting opposite Remy onto the left side. "I hope it's okay if I sit here, everywhere else is either full or crowded with people I want to stray from" he explained, then reached into his back pocket and brought out a notebook and pencil. "What's your name?"
Remy hesitated, they guessed this person wanted to be their friend. That made them feel a little better about this experience. Hopefully bring their mind off of coffee. "Remy, yours?"
The boy wrote down their name before responding, "I'm Emile!"
Remy gestured to the notes, "what're you doing?"
Emile looked up, "oh! I like taking notes of people I meet. So I can remember things and keep track on my friends and enemies. Plus, my dad does this to all of his clients! And I want to be like him someday" Emile smiled at the prospect, looking out the window to imagine his future for a few moments. "Anyway" he dragged out the word, returning to his notebook. "I bet I can tell you which house you'll be in at the end of this ride"
Remy cocked their eyebrow, "really?"
Emile nodded enthusiastically, "and if I do it means you have to be my friend for the rest of our years here! We can be inseparable like Spongebob and Patrick, or E.T and Elliot! Or Harry, Hermione and Ron!"
"What?"
"What?" Emile repeated almost instantly, smiling and dropping it, quickly writing a few things down in his notebook. Remy leaned back into their seat, "if we're gonna be friends you'll have to accept I'm non-binary" they stated, wondering if they were about to be judged, they would hate to be, for no matter how much they could control themselves around others, when alone they usually let out their less-than-desirable emotions.
"Non-binary" Emile repeated, tapping their chin in thought. "Darn, I'm become as forgetful as Dory!" He giggled, "can you explain what that is?"
Remy shrugged nonchalantly, they've explained it many times before and will do the same now, "means I'm not a specific gender. They/them pronouns"
Emile nodded vigorously as if they answered a question correctly and he was reassuring them on that matter, hurrying down a few more notes. "And when did you discover this?" He continued, not looking up for a moment until he seemed to suddenly remember something, then gazed at their posture and expressions closely.
Remy shifted in their seat, they hadn't been asked this before, people either accept it or don't and move on. "Uh...only earlier this year" they admitted, "my family took awhile to get used to it, I guess" Remy found them-self continuing, "but eh...whatever, right? I get it, it's weird, I had patience, but it ran out at the end, I guess that's what made them realise I was serious about it all"
Emile nodded slowly, set down his notebook and moved forward in his seat. "Remy, whatever your parents made you believe, it's not weird, but I'm happy they got over themselves! Some people don't like change, but some change has to happen" with that he shifted back in his seat, picked up the pad and continued to jot things down while Remy found them-self smiling at the boy they barely knew.
"I haven't told anyone that before" Remy admitted, "you're basically already a therapist" at this Emile's entire being lit up like a million stars clustered together, his hand pausing as his eyes softened with vulnerability, "really?" He murmured, in a voice that told Remy he couldn't be more happy to hear that being uttered about him. Remy found them-self smiling at his happiness, nodding their head encouragingly. "Really"
And Emile couldn't wipe the grin off his face if he tried.
Remy looked out the window at the passing scenery, "when do you think we'll get there?" They asked when silence befell the two. Emile hummed then shrugged, "soon, I hope! I want to know what house I'm in!" At the idea he began getting fidgety in his seat while Remy stayed relaxed, not really minding. "My dad said he'll love me no matter what!" Emile nodded his head once to emphasis that fact, "my sister overheard and said 'even if he was in Slytherin?', and he said it's just another house! So why should it matter?"
"Not all Slytherin's are evil" Remy agreed and Emile nodded hurriedly, "I know! The rep they get is terrible, like Nick from Zootopia!" Emile shook his head in disbelief, "I want to be in Slytherin to show they're not all evil!"
Remy smirked lightly, "you have their ambition, I can't see why not"
Emile grinned at the idea, "Thanks, Rem, we're gonna be great friends!"
Remy smiled in his direction, and found themselves silently agreeing.
By the time they reached the station it was dark out, Remy and Emile stayed close as they followed the cluster and jumped off the train, gazing around as much as they could with it being nightfall and all. Ahead of the crowd was a tall, giant of a man with long, scruffy hair and beard hair. Emile gazed at him curiously for a moment, "that's Hagrid" he suddenly chirped, tapping his pencil against his notebook. "He brings us to Hogwarts on the boats!" Remy nodded, getting a feeling Emile garnered a lot of knowledge from his siblings and his dad.
"Boats?" Remy frowned, Emile noticed and nudged his shoulder into theirs friendly, "don't worry, they've used them for years so I'm sure it's a safe mode of transport" with that, Emile went to follow the crowd when he stopped, turned to Remy, glanced through his notebook before he smiled and reached out his hand towards them. "Come on, Hufflepuff, let's go before they leave us behind!"
Remy held their hand and they both hurried to catch up with the crowd. If he had guessed right, and Hufflepuff was their house, they would be immensely awed and proud of the boy.
With Emile by their side, Remy didn't find the boat's that bad, plus with such a view of the castle up ahead, Remy was almost completely distracted. It wasn't too long, thankfully as it was quite cold, and the robes they wore didn't suffice much to store heat (the robes they changed into on the train).
Walking through the castle was something of astonishment, all the children around them couldn't stop looking around and whispering to their friends at the grand design of it all, how it seemed so old and fascinating. They walked up a bunch of flights of stairs until they reached a set of tall, double doors where a young adult walked out, hands clasped together, small smile resting on her features.
"Welcome to Hogwarts!" Her voice boomed all around them, Remy was sure she has had a lot of practice in the past to perfect this speech for the first years. "Soon, you'll walk through here to meet the rest of your peers, however, before so you must be sorted into a certain house. Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Gryffindor. The house will act as a soft of family, and whenever you do something worthy of it, you will earn house points! Any rule breaking, and you will lose them, whichever house has the most house points at the end of the year will win the house cup! Isn't that exciting?" She enthused, but when the children stayed silent she just sighed and shook her head.
"The ceremony will begin shortly! Follow me!" And with that, she turned to the doors and they opened on their own as she headed towards them looking over her shoulders to grin at the children, as if silently saying 'yeah, I made those doors move on their own. Bow down to me'.
"If we're sorted into a different house, can we not be friends?" Remy asked Emile as they headed into the Great Hall. Emile shook their head strongly, "no way! I'll be your friend no matter what, like...Marianna and The Bog King! They were both from different worlds, but in the end became lovers! Even if it's never happened before!" Remy chuckled and rolled their eyes fondly, "you insinuating we'll become lovers?" Emile floundered for a moment, gazing at Remy from the corner of his eyes.
"I don't know" he finally settled on.
"I wouldn't mind, babe" Remy grinned and Emile burst into giggles, lifting their arm and looping it through Remy's. They finally reached the end of the hall and quietened down to listen to what professor McGonagall had to say to them all before the sorting hat will begin.
She arose from her chair and began, "Hello, everyone" she greeted, voice frail like her being, but still with some kick left. "There are some announcements I will like to make to you all; the Dark Forest is strictly off limits from every student here, and the fourth floor corridor on the left hand side is currently out of bounds due to...reasons" she hesitated, not wanting to scare the children just yet. "That is our caretaker" she then pointed to an older man who stood in the doorway to the room, "it will be advised to not bother him" with that, she sat back down and the younger lady took over yet again.
"Alright, when I call your name, just come on forth and the hat will tell you where you belong!" As she began listing out names, Remy looked over at the different tables, knowing which one was which from the colours on the robes and ties of the students from older years sitting there. They frowned and nudged Emile, "Slytherin And Hufflepuff aren't that close"
Emile noticed that, too, and shrugged, still with his arm wrapped around Remy's. "So? We'll meet up during lessons and breaks!" He reassured, resting his head on Remy's shoulder. "Don't worry, Rem, I'm not losing you to some different houses" and Remy had never felt more close to someone in their life.
Finally, the professor called up Remy who smiled at Emile, letting go of him to walk through the few remaining students. They walked up on stage, taking a seat on the wooden stool, hoping the hat wouldn't be too cruel as it seemed to be to other children. It hummed and hawed for a bit, thinking, thinking, until it boomed out the name of the house they'd be spending the rest of their time in.
"Hufflepuff!"
Remy grinned at Emile who threw his arms into the air in delight. Jumping down from stage, Remy sat down at their table, grinning at the others who whooped and cheered. After a few more students, Emile was called up and Remy watched as he sat down on the chair, holding his notebook and pen tight in his hands.
"Difficult, difficult..." it murmured, Remy hoped Emile would be put into Slytherin for his sake, for he seemed to really want to go into that house, from the fact he kept glancing in it's direction. Remy then noticed he was moving his lips, wondering what he was saying, but their answers were given when the hat shouted it out into the room. "Slytherin, eh? That's a first"
Remy smirked at the delighted expression that crossed over Emile's face at the sudden knowledge. "If you're sure; better be Slytherin!"
The table broke out into cheers as Emile all but sprinted over, taking a seat on the end, looking more pleased with himself then ever before. Remy looked up over at him and caught his eye, sending a slight wave for Emile to lift his whole arm and shake it back in response. Remy shook their head, eying the boy fondly. They already really liked him.
The last few students were in their houses, and when they were McGonagall called for the feast to begin, suddenly food appeared out of thin air across all the tables, the first years making noises of awe before tucking in hungrily, chatter bursting throughout the room. Remy found it easy to talk to the people around them, and when looking up at Emile, they noticed he looked like he was having a good time, too. Throughout the meal they kept glancing at each other, sending smiles and few worded sentences with the movement of their lips, however they could barely understand each other.
Once they finished their food, Remy gestured him over as they had a spare seat beside them. Emile dismissed himself and hurried across the room, catching a few peoples attention but he didn't care as he took a seat beside Remy and leaned against them. "This place is nearly as glorious as Atlantis! From the movie, of course" He gushed, holding Remy's hand tightly.
The Hufflepuffs around them were shocked to see someone from another table sit with them, the older years especially, as if hasn't really...happened before. Especially a Hufflepuff and a Slytherin, the complete opposite houses. "Do you have a reference to everything?" Emile nodded with a sweet giggle.
"Why're you sitting here?" Someone asked, putting down their food. Remy and Emile looked over at her, "because we're friends!" Emile responded, "a Slytherin and a Hufflepuff? It's unheard of" one of the older Hufflepuffs dismissed, but from that statement alone Remy saw the determination flare in Emile's eyes. "Really? Well" Emile looked at Remy, "I think we're about to make history books, Rem! Almost like Remy from ratatouille" Remy found them-self laughing at that one, shaking their head.
They sat together for the rest of the meal until it was drawing to an end and they would be sent to their houses. "Come to my table tomorrow!" Remy agreed and watched him go, feeling a little sad they won't be able to spend all their time with the boy, but happy he got into the house he wanted.
The first years were sent out of the hall where they were lead to their houses, as Hufflepuffs passed Slytherin, Remy and Emile reached out, their hands skimming by each other's, both sending the other a smile that would last them the entire night.
Remy listened to the explanation of their house, finding it rather handy that it was so close to the kitchens as they rationalised they could go get coffee whenever they wanted. If they didn't have one tomorrow morning they'd think they wouldn't make it to first class. Remy also played close attention on how to enter the house, "two from the bottom, middle of the second row" are the taps one has to complete against the barrels in the tune 'Helga Hufflepuff' to get in, otherwise you'd be drenched in vinegar, and Remy didn't quite like the sound of that.
They all crouched through the uneven pathway until they were inside the cozy house, warm orange lighting up the room, showing off the couches and plants hanging from the walls. With one quick look around, Remy concluded that they liked it very much. Due to them being exhausted - like many other students - they all headed up to the bedrooms. Remy didn't mind having to share much, as long as they wouldn't get too personal they were alright.
However, what bothered them was the separate 'boys and girls' dormitories. They were sent to the boys one, but they guessed nothing like that was really ever going to change to something that appealed to non-binary folks, too, so they dropped the thought and changed into a pair of pyjamas while the boys behind them conversed and chattered with each other.
Thankfully it didn't last, and after brushing their teeth Remy laid down in bed and sighed out, happy with everything that had happened on the first day, feeling a smile grow on their face when they thought of Emile.
The next morning, when Remy finally found themself waking up, they bathed in the fact the morning sunlight streamed over their body, just missing their face so their eyes wouldn't be blinded. They felt like they could exist like this for ages, but when they couldn't hear anyone, they slowly sat up and gazed at the empty beds around them.
"Shit" they whispered, dragging the quilt back and standing up. They were always known for having terrible sleeping patterns, and honestly if they tried they could probably sleep for at least twenty four hours without disruptions. In fact, they slept so much as a child their family nicknamed them 'Sleep' and would call them it often. Remy couldn't mind, they actually rather enjoyed the nickname, and adored being connected with their favourite activity. However, they knew they would have to find a way to be awoken early in the morning.
Hurriedly changing into their robes, they collected everything they would need for class and quickly left the house that was abandoned from life - Remy could feel they were already in deep shit. Walking down the corridor, they stepped into the kitchen and placed their stuff onto the counter, hurriedly making a mug of coffee while checking over their schedule.
From looking at the map, they made out which way they'd have to go to get to class. They hoped Emile would be there. Grabbing the coffee once it was finished, they went to rush to class when they remembered something. Tucking their stuff under their arm, they brought out a pair of sunglasses from their pocket, placed them on, then while studying the map hurried through the castle of a school, a mere seven minutes later and they finally found their class. The lesson was quite literally almost over as Remy calmed down outside the door and sauntered on in.
Emile, who had been slightly worried before, relaxed and grinned when he saw his friend sipping coffee, eyes gazing through blackened sunglasses. The professor looked less than pleased when they eyed the late student. "Remy. There was no point of you even coming here" he stated, Remy just shrugged and sat beside Emile who patted the spot.
"And is that...coffee?"
Remy took a large sip, "a bitch needs this to survive" they explained themselves, making other students in the room giggle into their hands. "Do not use that sort of language in here, Remy, you have to learn to wake up earlier" and with that, he dropped the conversation. It was the first day, so the professor was lenient.
While everyone packed away their stuff, Emile turned to Remy. "You missed out on breakfast" he commented, but Remy shrugged. "I never have breakfast, babes, don't worry about it" they reassured, nudging up their glasses. Emile reached over his desk and picked up something wrapped in a napkin - handing it to Remy, they placed down their stuff and unwrapped it to see it was a donut. Remy send Emile a smirk who grinned, "you know me well" Remy murmured, taking a bite from the donut and moaning in delight at the perfect taste.
Emile found himself watching Remy for a few moments longer before he turned to his notebook and jotted something's down. Rent eyed him as he did; "adding more to my autobiography?" They questioned, finishing the donut in record timing before they stood up and tucked their chair back under the desk.
Emile chortled and rose, too, pocketing his notebook and sending his friend a grin. "You're becoming my favourite client" he commented. Remy rolled their eyes, leaving the classroom with Emile in tow beside them. "Are all your friends your clients?" Emile nodded in response, "it doesn't sound very professional to have favourites" Remy countered, which made Emile falter in his movements for a moment, before shrugging.
"I'll break the rules for you"
Remy felt a blossom of heat swarm across their chest. They smiled at Emile who grinned right back.
"You're cheesy for a Slytherin"
"And you're rude for a Hufflepuff!"
