Emile found himself happy to be back at school, weird, usually everyone hates school - but it was nice to be back from such a long break. He was in the second year now, waiting around in the grand hall to try and spot his best friend, Remy. Throughout the first year the two were inseparable, they spent each and everyday together, their friendship growing and growing until it became impossible to break.

Switching numbers, they texted and phoned throughout summer, but in the recent days coming up to school Emile noticed Remy had changed a little, they weren't as happy as before, and usually kept conversations short and brief. Emile knew the best thing to do would be to deal with it in real life, but he was worried, he hadn't seen them at all and the meal was about to start.

He talked to a few other people he made friends with from his house - not many, mainly due to his time spent with Remy. Everyone in school thought they couldn't do it but they did, a Hufflepuff and Slytherin, never seen before. Thankfully, no one hated them on it - in fact everyone encouraged it, people from houses should be friends with other houses, too. Especially being kind towards Slytherins.

By the time the new first years were rolling in Emile had enough - it was obvious Remy wasn't showing up so he was going to look for them. Standing up, he managed to slip out the room and down the corridor, texting Remy as he went, but still no response. The first place he checked was the Hufflepuff house (able to enter after Remy told him how).

The main room was empty, but that didn't discourage him. He climbed up to the dormitories and into the boys room, surprised to see a lump on one of the beds. A lump that looked like a human body. Emile slowly walked up, assuming it was Remy and taking a seat on the edge of the bed. He felt the lump shift.

"My dad says I'm really coming along with my therapy training" Emile began, folding his hands on his lap. "One day I get to be like him. I know I'm far away yet, but you know what they say! Just keep swimming, just keep swimming" he began to sing, bobbing his head side to side.

"Just lay down and fucking cuddle me" Remy murmured from under the blanket. Emile smiled, taking off his robe and shoes to snuggle up to Remy, holding them close and comfortingly. The pair laid under the blanket for awhile, in the silence Emile sometimes spoke up to murmur something he remembered, anything that might make Remy feel better, as obviously something was getting to him.

"And I told her, 'no silly! Aang is the one who-'"

"My parents hate me"

Emile stopped talking instantly, eyes wide as what Remy said registered in his mind. He couldn't see their expression as his face was tucked up close to his chest, under his chin, but he heard his words loud and clear, worry clouding through him.

"What do you mean?"

Remy sighed, holding Emile tighter. "I'm a Hufflepuff in a family of Gryffindors - As soon as I told them the bitches didn't speak a word to me!" They suddenly sat up, Emile flinched at the sudden movement but followed suit, rubbing Remy's back as they held their head in their hands, breathing shallow.

"The entire fucking summer! Not a word! They'd stare at me as if I was a disappointment! The-the.." Remy choked up, unable to finish before sobs were shuddering through him and tears were slipping down his cheeks, splashing on the blanket that pooled around his body.

Emile shuffled closer, wrapping both arms around his friend, pulling them close to comfort them as they cried. "Keep crying" Emile murmured, "let it all out..." he encouraged, allowing Remy to rant and rant about them, not even their siblings would look at them - was it such a crime they weren't put into Gryffindor?

"And-and if they did mention me they'd use the wrong pronouns on purpose!" Remy cried out, tightly gripping their hair as a way to help release their pent up tension. Emile's eyes darkened at this, but Remy didn't see, their face hidden in their hands.

"It seems like someone needs to speak to your family" Emile murmured lowly, Remy didn't notice his chance in demeanour, just agreed while trying to calm themselves down. Emile glanced at the ground for a few minutes, letting his imagination wonder until he was satisfied, then he turned back to Remy, lifting their head up so they could see his smile.

"I have something that might cheer you up"

Remy, finally wiping away their tears, snorted, "you always do"

They left the house after that, avoiding going to lessons in favour of making Remy feel better about their current predicament. They wandered the halls hand in hand, physical affection became a habit between the two in the first year, so most certainly it was going to carry on in the second and most likely forevermore.

"Where are we going?" Remy decided to ask when they began climbing up a bunch of stairs, hurrying up them before they would move and take them in a completely different direction. "We are going..." Emile drifted, tugging Remy down a hallway quickly before they appeared in front of a door, Remy knowing where it led to instantly.

"Ravenclaw's house?" Remy asked in confusion, turning to Emile who smirked and nodded. "How will we get in, smartass?" Remy then asked, watching Emile walk up to the door, still looking smug. "Usually it's a philosophical question which - apparently - can be answered with your own opinion" he explained, lifting the knocker to hit it against the door, taking a step back to stand beside Remy as they waited for the question.

"What came first" the door's voice suddenly sounded, the two kids leaning back a little as it did. "The chicken or the egg?"

The two kids glanced at each other with risen eyebrows, then turned back to the door.

"The egg!"

"The chicken!" They both answered at the same time, the door opening moments later. They hesitated and looked at each other again, bursting into laughter after a brief pause of silence. Guess the question will never be answered.

Emile stepped in first, Remy closing the door behind them as they headed into the empty common room, looking around the room draped with blue.

"Why are we here again?" Remy asked, turning to Emile who climbed up onto a window sill, patting the spot beside him. "Look at this" Emile responded and Remy did so, sitting beside their friend to gaze out at the views below, eyes widening when they took it all in.

"Wow..." they breathed and Emile nodded in agreement. "Bitches get these views while I'm stuck in a fucking hovel"

Emile's laughter filled the room they were in, Remy found themselves smiling as they looked over at their friend who grinned right back, eyes dancing with amusement. Yeah, he always knew how to make them feel better.

Throughout the few months leading to Christmas, Remy's family wasn't mentioned once, neither of the two found the need to bring them up, it wasn't necessary and besides, Emile didn't want to make their friend upset. Instead, the two spent their time just like the first year - going to classes together and spending nearly every free hour by each other's side.

Now the two were slightly older and had growing confidence, some nights Emile would sneak into Remy's house so the two could sleep on the couches in the common room, cuddled up together on the nights they couldn't be alone - the nights they needed that someone, and that was who they were to each other.

It seemed Christmas snuck up on the two before they could even realise it, but Emile remembered the start of the year, remembered how distraught Remy was and like Hell he would let them return home. Instead, he took them to their home, not asking for permission from either families, letting his parents send a letter to Remy's so they wouldn't think their child was kidnapped or taken away. They didn't get a letter back.

And as the years rolled on, Remy always came home with Emile, it wasn't a questioned thing anymore - it occurred as if that was how it was from the start.

They had never come across people who judged them, bullied them or made fun of them, their life in school was pretty smooth sailing if they were honest - with Remy gliding on through without a care of what their future would hold, while Emile did focus on schoolwork, he focused more on his therapy and lessons from his dad when they were home - he practiced on Remy countless times and the teen knew Emile would be the best therapist his city has ever seen.

It was the sixth year they first encountered someone who questioned their friendship. Who wondered what they were, and why a Slytherin would ever befriend a Hufflepuff. The two were sitting on a bench in one of the hallways, their legs crossed over one another's, Remy on their phone, Emile writing things down in his notebook.

They looked up to the boy who questioned them, his group of friends just behind them.

"None of your business, bitch" Remy replied, returning to their phone. Emile smiled their way, not adding in his input until he heard the next words that came from the boy's mouth.

"Why would anyone want to befriend you?"

It was directed at Remy, that was obvious, Emile looked up to his friend quick to see their eyes narrow, hands grip their phone tighter and Emile knew that meant they were hurt but desperately trying to cover it up and no one hurt his friend and got away with it.

Shoving his notebook to the side, Emile jumped off the bench and brought his wand, holding it menacing at the boy who ducked back towards his friends in fright.

"Emile-" Remy tried, watching in shock as a bolt of light shot out of Emile's wand directly at the boy who made an undignified 'bleh!' before shrinking and turning into a pigeon. His friends made cries of alarm, rushing away to have a distance between them and Emile who's expression turned menacing, watching the pigeon flap around and make continuous screeching noises.

"Emile- what the fuck!?" Remy cried out, appearing at his side. Emile turned to his friend and smiled, "what? Just imagine he was Jafar! That's what I did"

"But why did you turn him into a pigeon?" Remy asked, bringing out their wand, ready to turn him back but pausing when Emile responded.

"He insulted you"

Remy found themselves smiling, staring at their friend who grinned. "You evil bitch I love you" Emile laughed at that, the two forgetting to change the boy back, allowing their friends to carry him to a professor. Instead, they grabbed their stuff and returned to the Slytherin common rooms, sprawling on the couches there to have a little more privacy.

"Y'know, Em" Remy started, the boy looking up to smile at him.

"Isn't it weird we've never addressed each other as best friends?"

Emile furrowed his eyebrows, putting his notebook and pencil into his cloaks pocket, shifting across the couch to be closer to Remy. "Haven't we?"

"Nope" Remy popped the 'p' in response, a smirk tugging at their lips. "Can you ever guess why?"

Emile let out a giggle, glancing at the ground. "I couldn't - maybe you could explain it to me?"

The two chuckled again, moving towards each other until they were physically touching, cuddled up on the couch, Remy rubbing their thumb across the top of Emile's hand. "I like being friends with you" Emile murmured.

"We can stay friends"

Emile tilted his head back to gaze up at Remy with a cute smile, "but not best friends"

"Best friends? We don't know her"

Emile chuckled, returning their head to Remy's shoulder.

"We're friends who may or may not one day kiss"

Remy snorted, resting their face against the top of Emile's head.

"I won't kiss you unless we're in front of that damn pigeon"

Emile laughed, closing his eyes.

"I wouldn't have it any other way"
