"I'm going to give him a piece of my mind!" Patton exclaimed, pacing in front of his two close friends who leaned back on his bed, smiling in delight at the prospect of Patton standing up for himself (as he usually strayed from confrontation).
"Yeah!" Roman and Virgil cheered him on as they were the two to encourage him to do this.
"I've been nothing but polite to him" Patton carried on to justify his reasoning behind all of this, "and he is rude for no reason!" He concluded, stopping his pacing to face his friends who both nodded along.
"We'll be there for you!" Roman reminded and Patton relaxed a little, allowing a soft smile to land on his lips. "Thanks, guys, you're the best"
"Not as great as you, popstar" Virgil shot back and Patton giggled, pulling them both up into a tight hug.
Quickly the three left Patton's house and started walking down the street, Patton ahead, thinking over what he was going to say to him when they finally arrived at his house. The 'him' they were referring to was none other than Logan Atlas, a boy that goes to their school. He joined the school a year ago and on the first day he was polite to anyone who talked to him, including Patton, but as the months went by he became meaner and ruder until he finally snapped at Patton, telling him to leave him alone for good. They weren't the closest before that anyway, Logan never agreed to meeting him anywhere or hanging out with him in school, they were merely acquaintances but after Patton told Roman and Virgil what had happened the two emphasised he should retaliate back which was what they were doing now.
"D'you think he'll be there?" Patton worried a little, not wanting to turn up and have to deal with his parents, either lying to them or telling the truth to why they were there.
"Most likely, I've never seen him out before" Roman answered and Virgil agreed, "from what I've heard he spends a lot of time inside" he shrugged, never really entirely believing gossip himself but from the type of person Logan was he wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.
Every time Patton wondered to himself if this was the right thing to do he'd be reminded of what Logan told him earlier that day (and the way he treated him in the past) and push the worries to the side. He needed to do this to prove he wasn't some push over one could insult - especially if he was polite and didn't deserve it.
"That's it" Virgil motioned to the house across the street from them. It had a pristine yet boring garden - not a single plant except for perfectly trimmed green grass. Crossing the road quick, they pushed open the clean-white gate and walked along the stone pathway right up to the porch.
"There's a car here" Roman commented, nodding his head in it's direction. It looked expensive, a sleek black, sitting halfway inside the garage.
Patton was first so he lifted his hand to knock when a sudden muffled shout from inside prevented him. "Pat-?" Roman went to question but Patton hushed him quietly, glancing at his friends to see their reactions. They were both confused until another yell sounded, their eyes widening in shock.
"We should...go...right?" Patton whispered but Roman was already pressing his ear against the door, waving at his friends to quiet for him to listen.
Neither of them liked it but silently watched as Roman listened, unable to stop trying to listen to.
"Logan!" They all definitely heard that. "Stop being so fucking difficult!"
"Looks like he's already getting told off" Roman joked but Virgil sent him a look to shut up, his anxiety worming around inside his stomach - whoever was inside sounded really mad.
They heard Logan respond but his voice wasn't loud enough to be clear for them to decipher what he said.
"No it isn't! This is who you are! Stop trying to be like everyone else, this is just some stupid craze!" The same voice yelled again.
The three boys glanced at each other, silently asking if any of them might understand what the argument coming from inside was about. They all knew this was wrong and they should all probably leave and forget about it but they just couldn't stop.
"I do!" The same female voice yelled after Logan responded, yet again too quiet for them to make out, "I do accept you! I accepted you when you told me you were gay, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, and now panromantic, I don't care! I love you for who you are but this?! This isn't you!"
Everyone's eyes widened, even Roman took a few steps away from the door alongside the other two, they definitely weren't supposed to hear that and now they all understood it was in their best interest to leave as fast as possible.
Unfortunately, the door suddenly whipped open and Logan was in the doorway, still wearing his clothes from earlier that day, tears racing down his cheeks from his puffy red eyes. He took a glance at the three boys, scoffed and quickly dashed out the house, leaving through the gate and down the road.
"Logan!" A woman was now in the doorway too, watching her child run down the street, most certainly not coming back even if she yelled for him to.
She let out a groan, running a hand through her hair to try and compose herself. The three boys shared an awkward and worried look.
"Who are you?" She finally asked in a bitter tone to the three boys, "we're-uh-...here to talk about our lord and saviour Jesus-" before Roman could even finish the door was slammed shut and the three were relaxed again, but still mostly tense. At least now they weren't suspected of anything other than being three good Christian boys.
"Great save" Virgil murmured to Roman, half genuinely, half sarcastically.
The two quickly realised they were alone when they turned to see Patton darting down the same direction Logan just left from. "I hope that nerds okay" Roman frowned, he and Virgil could guess what the argument was about but they were certain if anyone could make them feel better it was Patton.
"Logan! Lo! Wait!" Patton called to the teen who was speed-walking to nowhere in particular, he just wanted to get away.
"Please, Logan" Patton finally caught up, jogging beside him to prevent falling behind.
"Please leave me alone" Logan begged, voice quiet and broken. Patton's heart shattered when he heard it but he wasn't about to acquiesce to his plea. "Logan, stop, stop" Patton reached over and gently grabbed his arms, halting him from crossing the street without looking.
He didn't exactly protest much, just sniffled and carried on wiping at his eyes, the skin around them a glowing bright red. Patton watched him for a moment, cupping his hands and taking them away from his face before he would rub his skin raw.
Then, ever so gently Patton stepped forward and pulled him into a hug, one Logan collapsed into, crying into his shoulder as he finally allowed himself to let it all out, clinging to the back of Patton's blue top as tight as he could in case Patton might slip away and he'd be all alone once more.
He sniffled, heaved and sobbed in the middle of the street and Patton suspected this mustn't be the most comfortable place to do this, especially as the few people who passed all stared on with sympathetic gazes.
"D'you wanna come home with me? We can talk there more privately" Patton suggested and Logan slowly nodded, silently walking beside him as Patton took his hand and directed him home. On the way he shot a text to Roman and Virgil, telling them what happened and how he would take Logan home to talk to him there.
"Patton! That you?" Patton's older sister called when he entered his house, it was always just him and his sister, his parents were never really in the picture. As soon as she was old enough she found a part time job and saved up to buy a small place for the both of them and now she had an even more stable job, one which she enjoyed very much, and Patton was extremely proud of her for it.
"Yeah, I have a friend too" he called back, her head peering round the corner to see her brother and his very clearly still upset friend.
"Oh, is everything okay?" She asked, when Patton silently shook his head but didn't elaborate she understood they might not want to reveal whatever happened to people they weren't close with so silently let them go to Patton's room where he closed the door and gestured for Logan to sit down on his bed.
"Do you want to talk about what happened or...?"
Logan nodded so Patton stayed silent for him to talk. He sighed, using his sleeve to clean his nose as he thought about how to start this. "My mother" he began, voice wavering with the remnants of his emotional moment.
"She isn't fond of the idea of me-she doesn't accept that I'm..." he drifted, fiddling with the tie that hung down his chest. "She doesn't like me being-uh-.." he faltered, stuttering and repeating himself to prolong the inevitable but when he glanced at Patton to see nothing but concern he took in a few breaths and calmed himself down.
"I'm a girl" she confirmed but quickly backtracked, "well I-I want to be but... she doesn't-she's not accepting of that sort of thing" she drifted, fighting not to look over at Patton in fear his whole demeanour changed and he was exactly like his mother but when Patton reached forward and took a hold of her hand she let out a relieved breath.
"I'm so sorry, Lo, that's...terrible" he shifted closer, able to catch Logan's gaze to silently reassure her that it was okay, she was in a safe place and he accepted her.
"Um-sorry" Patton chuckled, "Logan's probably not your name huh?"
She flushed a little and shook her head in agreement. "No, it's-it's not" she confirmed shyly, eyes averting from Patton to the floor and back again.
"If you don't mind, what is it?"
She was silent for a few minutes, opening she closing her mouth every so often because she did want to tell him but she was also a tad embarrassed - Patton would be the first person to hear her new name and she didn't know what the reaction might be. She knew he wouldn't make fun of her but it was still unnerving.
"Um-it's...A...Athena. Well that's what I want it to be, anyway, unless of course I change my mind but I don't know-"
"It's beautiful" Patton cut her off with a smile, squeezing her hand reassuringly. Athena's eyes softened, rimming with a new fresh set of tears.
"Really?" She whispered and Patton used his other arm to wrap around her shoulders, grinning. "Yeah, really! I love it" he confirmed and she was smiling widely, leaning into Patton's side hug he offered her to comfort her even further.
"If you want" Patton began, "you can stay here for as long as you need until you're ready to face your mother again" Athena looked up at him in surprise.
"Really? Are you sure?" Patton nodded hurriedly with a smile, "of course! My sister would love to have you around! She adores all of my friends" he giggled excitedly and Athena found herself smiling in Patton's direction.
Maybe her life wasn't going so badly after all.
A few months later...
"Patton? Athena?" Pat's sister called when she heard the front door open and close.
"It's me!" Athena called back, wondering why Patton wasn't home yet, usually he doesn't spend so much time out on a Saturday morning. "Oh, hey girl!" She giggled, coming out of her office to greet her in person.
"How is everything?" She asked and Athena sighed, crossing her arms over her chest. "Mother and father are still arguing, he told her if she doesn't change her views he'll take me under his custody"
Patton's sister frowned, "that's not good though, he travels everywhere! We'll barely see you"
"I know" Athena frowned, "I hope she will come around but it is uncertain" the two suddenly turned to the front door after it opened and Patton appeared with a bag in his hand. "Bear!" He giggled when he saw Athena, rushing over to give her a hug and a quick kiss to her cheek.
They had been dating for just over one month, after falling for each other through the two prior. Athena managed a smile at his affection, sending one more look to his sister to tell her everything was alright before Patton was dragging her over to his room, talking a mile a minute about a 'surprise he really wanted to show her'.
"What is it, Love?" She asked, sitting down on his bed after Patton ushered him too excitedly.
"I have a gift" he giggled, handing the bag over to her and telling her to close her eyes. She sighed but complied, searching through the bag until her hands landed on soft fabric.
"What is it?" She asked while pulling it out, keeping her eyes closed much to Patton's request. "You'll see" he cooed, helping her stand up and walk across the room until she was standing in front of the mirror, Patton moving her hands (which held the clothing article) to rest either side of her hips.
"Okay aaaaaand open!" Patton called, Athena's eyes instantly landing on the skirt that she held in front of her legs.
She gasped, quickly lifting it closer to her face to gaze at the beautiful dark blue material it was made out of. It was simple yet perfect, she was never one for something too extravagant, flashy or colourful.
"Patton this-thank you" she stuttered, looking over at her boyfriend who giggled, bouncing on the balls of his feet.
"D'you like it?" He asked with a cocked head.
"I love it" she confirmed and Patton cheered, rushing forward to give her a quick kiss to her lips before telling her to put it on. Without much hesitation she tugged off her jeans (while Patton faced the other way) and pulled on the skirt, it reached her knees and fit her perfectly.
"You can look now" Athena said while gazing at herself in the mirror. Patton twirled around and awed, clasping his hands together excitedly.
"It looks so good!" He gushing, rushing up to her side, "you look so pretty Bear!" He added and Athena smiled, turning to her boyfriend she felt like she didn't deserve he was so good to her. Helping her in anyway he could, dropping everything if she needed him, he was perfect and she truly did love him.
"Thank you so much, Patton" he grinned, cupping her cheeks and brushing their noses together cutely.
"Anything for you, Bear"
