Logan leaned against yet another tree in the past ten minutes, he could feel sweat dripping down his body and sticking his clothes to his skin, the hat on top his head barely doing anything to shield his tired eyes from the blaring sun above. He had been walking for all morning since dawn, anything to get away from the place he once called home. He knew he wasn't welcome anymore, it wasn't going to be long before they hurt him in some way - he needed to escape and he knew they wouldn't try and find him.
He had crossed fields and fields of land, avoiding animals and barn houses in fear he'd get shot for trespassing but he knew he'd need to stop at one and ask for some sort of help soon - even though he was nearly one hundred percent certain he'd be turned away.
Taking a few gasps of air he pushed himself up and hobbled along the yellow stained grass, his throat dry and begging for a sip of water. He could imagine it and it was driving him insane.
He really, really didn't want to die here. He'd do anything for some water, Hell he'd sleep outside if it meant one glass of the stuff.
Another five minutes later Logan found himself slumping against a fence surrounding a large lot of land, the fence itself was old, paint dried, chipped and barely resembling the colour it once was. He didn't take this into consideration, however, he just needed some sort of support.
Truly he didn't realise how long he stood there for, obviously too long, for a sudden voice startled him from his half asleep state. Yes he was almost falling asleep, who could blame him, his sleep schedule wasn't to be desired anyhow and he had been walking for a good part of the day.
"Need help there, kid?"
Logan's eyes met with the owner of the voice, an older man with sun tanned skin, a rough beard and clothes stained with dried mud. Logan assumed he was the owner of the land, with a shovel in his hand he looked to be doing some work around the farm. "I...I..." he drifted, a shaky hand reaching up and taking off his hat out of respect. "Please...I'll do anything, I can tend to horses or fix that broken fence over there..." he gestured to a part of the fence in the distance that had collapsed from old age. "I can't read nor write but I was good around the farm, please..."
The stranger took pity on the teenager, his voice was weak and his legs trembled under him, like they couldn't hold up his body. "Alright, what's your name, boy?" He asked while stepping closer, holding out a hand to help him climb over the fence which he did with slight struggle, almost collapsing to the ground the other side if the man didn't balance him out. "Logan" he replied and the man nodded, taking him across the field towards the barn besides his home.
"Get kicked out, eh?"
Logan shook his head, "my momma passed away, they didn't want me there anymore, I had to leave"
The stranger nodded and sighed, he hated to see such young people left without a home. The barn doors were open and the man sat Logan down on a pile of hay, letting him relax there while he called out his sons name. "Roman!"
"Yeah?" A younger but firm voice replied, with a soft grunt afterwards. "C'mere, I need your help!" The man explained, Roman let out a huff, leaving behind his job to jog over to the barn. Entering through the doorway he wiped the back of his hand across his forehead, hair slicked back with sweat from working under the sun. Logan couldn't help but look over and let his eyes linger on the boy he seemed to be similar age of, he wore a red checkered shirt with the sleeves rolled up to reveal his toned muscles - presumably obtained from living on a farm. With that he wore shorts that had mostly lost the blue pigment they originally had.
"Get some water and food for the boy, yeah?"
Roman finally looked over at the newcomer, seemingly only now realising he was here. His eyes widened a fraction a bit in shock, then softened with worry and confusion. Logan could see the many questions flitter across his face but he didn't ask any, just nodded in acknowledgment and left the barn. "You just sit there and rest, I can't let you stay here for free though, my son'll give you the rundown once you're in better shape, alright?" Logan nodded and the man took a few steps closer, reaching out his hand which Logan shook with as much effort as he could.
"The names Rodger"
"Thank you, Rodger"
He pressed his lips together in a tight-lipped smile before gripping the handle of his shovel again and walking across the barn, leaving through the exit opposite to where they entered. Logan settled further into the hay and sighed out, letting his eyes scan across the large barn. There were walls separating parts into rooms, Logan could see a few horses inside of them. The sight almost settled him, finally he was with something he was similar with, it soothed him.
Closing his eyes he could feel himself slip in and out of consciousness, he didn't want to fall asleep but it happened against his will. So much energy lost his body would have collapsed in exhaustion anyway - it wasn't ideal but he hoped Rodger wouldn't mind.
Later in the day when the sun was closer to the horizon Logan finally awoke from his slumber. His bleary eyes tried to take in his surroundings, from the sound of the horses neighing he had a slight panic thinking he was home but when sitting up and looking at the barn he knew he wasn't. Then he looked down in his lap, realising there was a rugged blanket across his body - someone must have put that there. It calmed him down immensely, enough proof that Rodger didn't mind he had passed out.
Pushing it aside he looked down and gasped, right there was a mug of water. Without a second thought or an ounce of hesitation he grabbed it and swallowed it all at an unhealthy rate but he didn't care - he could feel it running through his body and it felt euphoric.
"Slow down there, Lo"
Swallowing the last drop of water Logan sheepishly pulled away the mug, wiping the water across his top lip with his sleeve. Roman smirked at him with crossed arms, his hair hanging above his forehead like he had just washed it. Logan assumed that wasn't the case.
"Feeling better? We couldn't wake you up" Roman chuckled, moving closer to him and taking the mug. "Ma insisted to call a doctor but pa knew you were only tired" he shrugged and looked over his shoulder, eyeing how much time of the day they had left.
"C'mon, bet you're feeling better" Roman held out a hand towards him and Logan took it, letting himself be hauled to his feet and led out of the barn. "Pa said you could tend to horses? I'm good at it, maybe now I'll finally have competition" he winked and Logan shrugged awkwardly, fumbling with his hat he still hadn't put back on his head.
"I am...alright, I wouldn't call myself the best"
Roman snorted, "don't say that, why else do we have you here for?" Logan looked to the ground, tensing up a little when Roman bumped their shoulders together. "Don't worry, I won't let them send you away" he reassured and Logan managed a small thank you.
Leaving the mug on the porch Roman gave Logan a quick tour of the place, showing him the animals and where they grow the food, explaining he had two sisters inside but pa didn't want them interacting with him for obvious reasons - he was a stranger. Logan understood but found himself reassuring Roman he wouldn't dream of doing anything to them.
"I never said you would" Roman responded, "besides, you're as scrawny as a newborn foal, they could defend themselves" Logan cleared his throat awkwardly and looked down at himself, internally comparing himself to Roman who even though they were of similar age they looked vastly different. Yes, that was very embarrassing.
"Hey" Roman stopped him and urged him to look up, "I know that look- stop worrying, if you're as good as you said you were you'll end up perfect - like me - in no time" Logan couldn't help but roll his eyes when Roman flexed his muscles, the stronger of the two laughing at his reaction and shoving him playfully.
"Roman! Come in for dinner! And send that boy to the barn! He'll get his food soon" a strong female voice called from the house, Roman called back to show he heard her and took Logan back to the barn, apologising about him having to stay in here instead of the house but he couldn't really do much due to his younger sisters and mother being there too. Logan reassured him it was okay, this was more than what he could ask for.
"Ma was worried about you, I'm sure you have the biggest portion which'll annoy the fuck out of pa" and Roman smirked in amusement as if he couldn't wait to see it. "Try and talk to the horses, they'll need to get used to you after all" Roman suggested before leaving the barn, only one door open now.
Logan left his hat on the pile of hay and walked over to the horses, standing in front of the room that homed the horse that was completely brown, their main and tail that slightest bit lighter. Coming right up to the half door separating them they stuck out their head and Logan contently brushed his hand down the horses long face, a small smile lifting up his face.
He remembered the horses on his mother's farm, they were this friendly most of the time which was what made him so attached to horses in the first place. He learns pretty quickly too so knew how to control them in no time.
"She likes you, huh?"
Logan turned to Roman who kicked closed the door, a plate of steaming food in his hand, a cup of water in the other. Petting the horse one more time Logan walked over and peered at the food with interest in his eyes. As soon as he smelt it his stomach grumbled, cheeks burning when Roman laughed in amusement.
"Here, eat up" Roman encouraged, giving him the food. Quickly Logan sat down on his hay pile and ate with the cutlery provided, sipping slowly from the water so he could make it last throughout the entire meal. All throughout Roman sat nearby, eyes never leaving the boy who scoffed down his food like there was no tomorrow.
"Don't choke" Roman commented, smiling. Logan swallowed the food in his mouth and paused for a few seconds, his cheeks lighting up with pink that Roman found he adored to look at. Once he finished (which didn't take long) Roman returned inside the house to eat his own food while Logan got to know the three horses that were there, the complete brown one, the one with black and white spots and they grey one. They were all lovely, only having slight trouble with the grey one who at first didn't want to have anything to do with him.
"Do you drink?" Roman asked when he returned, holding up a flask. "What is it?" Logan responded, parting from the grey horse who quickly returned inside.
"Whiskey" Roman replied, falling onto a pile of hay nearby.
"Oh, then yes" Logan responded and Roman chuckled, sipping while Logan sat down and pulled the blanket over his lap. The barn wasn't cold but it wasn't the warmest either. He was sure he would be fine during the night however. "What happened to you anyway? Why are you here?" Roman asked, tossing over the flask.
Logan took a swig before responding. "My momma passed away a month ago, the man she was with took her home and didn't like me much"
Roman frowned and ran a hand through his hair that had dried and softened up, flopping over his head with it's own desire. Logan liked the sight of it, he wondered how soft it actually was. "Piece of work, huh? Sorry to hear, Lo. But hey! If your life was great you never would have met me" Logan snorted and looked down at the flask in his hands, messing with the lid.
"Oh I regret staying here" he replied and Roman gasped in mock hurt, the two boys laughing about it afterwards. "C'mon, tell me more about yourself" Roman encouraged and Logan sighed, handing back the flask when he gestured for it. "I was raised on a farm and tended to the animals, horses mostly, never went to school, my momma didn't see the point"
Roman frowned, "but schools important. Shit but important"
Logan shrugged, "I would like to go but it's too late, I can't even read" he looked down forlornly and Roman wouldn't take that. Standing up he moved to sit beside him, turning the flask on it's side to show a sentence that had been engraved on the side.
"Here" he traced his finger below the words, Logan looked over them then up at Roman who smiled encouragingly. "The first word is 'one', you know what that means?"
Logan nodded, "this is more, and this is time" Roman pointed to the words, "can you repeat all that?"
"One more time" Logan responded and Roman beamed. They continued this until Logan could read the full sentence from the flask (even if he wasn't technically reading, just remembering what Roman has fold him).
"One more time we are strangers, but this time with memories" Logan then cocked his head, "what does that mean?"
Roman snorted and chugged a little of the whiskey, "you think I know?" He then looked over the sentence again and shrugged, "I don't know, but I like it" he concluded and Logan nodded his head in agreement, he liked it too.
"You probably have to learn the alphabet first, that's what we did, before you can start reading" Roman explained and Logan picked at the hay. "What's the alphabet?"
Roman looked surprised for a moment, then remembered the poor boy hadn't gone to school. "It's the letters that make up words" he explained, pointing to the first word of the sentence on the flask. "See? O, n, e, those are three letters" Logan nodded, he could understand that - even if he didn't go to school he could work out the basics for himself.
"Don't worry, I'll be your teacher" Roman reassured, leaning back in the hay. "But enough of it for now, I'm bored. One day though! One day I'll get you to read a story to me" Roman smirked and Logan could see from his expression that that was a promise.
They carried on talking for the next hour about their lives, how they were raised and what Logan would be expected to do now he was living with them.
"Roman! Time to come in!" The two were interrupted by Roman's mother's call. It made them both frown but Roman wasn't about to go against her. "Here" Logan handed back the flask and Roman smiled, popping off the lid and drinking the rest slowly but the drink wasn't the thing he was savouring.
"Sleep well, Lo" Roman stood up and turned off the lights, leaving a candle lit up so Logan wasn't left in complete darkness.
"Thank you, Roman" he responded and Roman smiled, hopefully soon his dad would let Logan stay inside the house. He was sure with enough encouraging he could change his mind - really, what threat does Logan pose? None at all.
And as Roman walked back to the house he smiled, glad he hadn't found a woman to marry yet.
