"At least it's a nice day!" Patton tried to make light of the situation they were in. Beside him, Deceit rolled his eyes, scoffing under his breath. Why he ever agreed to teaming up with Patton will forever escape him; he could have easily worked with literally anyone else in his class, but no, he chose Patton - and what happened because of that? They were lost.

Miles away from civilisation, walking along the boarder of a wooded area, with nothing but trees and rows and rows of fields and tall grass. How had they even gotten this lost? One wrong turn in the woods and you were a goner! Patton said he knew where they were going, he said they didn't need a map, he had been here plenty of times.

Deceit was to blame, too, as he listened to Patton, and didn't get a map, even though he knew they would run into trouble if they didn't. He was sure Patton had been here before - but still, not enough times to memorise the whole place. Running a hand through his hair frustratedly, he looked at the sun that created a layer of an orange glow across the land as it slowly began to set over the horizon. Soon, they'd be left in the darkness, vulnerable to the elements.

At least the trees could be some sort of shelter, but what could be in the woods? What if they come across a ferocious beast!? Deceit needed to stop worrying so much, besides if that were to happen, he could push Patton to the ground and run, leaving him behind. Did that make him cruel? This was Patton's fault, after all.

"Don't look so worried" Patton spoke gently, bumping shoulders with Deceit who stopped staring at the ground with a forlorn expression - one he didn't even realise he was wearing. "We'll find home" he reassured, sending him a grin that made all the hate Deceit felt for him dissipate. They passed by streams, cut through the woods to only find themselves more lost, walked up and down hill after hill, all the while Patton kept up both of their moral with either words of reassurance, jokes, or cute stories he recalled from recent or past.

"And that's how I met my friend Roman!" Patton concluded, listing out the different way he had met his three friends. Before then was Logan and Virgil - Deceit knew all those students, but he wasn't friends with them - just shared the same few classes. Admittedly the one yellow-eyed boy didn't really have any friends. He could say he had a few online, but no one in school wanted to become close with the boy known for his lies. From kindergarten he was known as a freak, not only for his heterochromia, but because he had no parents - he was an orphan.

Still is to this day, he didn't see the problem, he didn't need a family - he didn't need anyone.

"What a lovely story" Deceit drawled, obviously bored out of his mind. Patton giggled and shrugged lightly, skipping along the grass as they slowly headed up the side of a hill. It wasn't so steep, but still Deceit's legs ached for how much they had walked for however many hours they had - and, the sun had completely set, leaving them with nothing but the moonlight that was slowly being covered by clouds.

"A train!" Patton suddenly gasped, grabbing Deceit's hand and tugging him the rest of the way up the hill. For some reason, Deceit felt tingles shoot us his arm, and he didn't entirely know what it was, why it occurred, or what it meant. "C'mon!" Patton called, running beside the train that was slowly picking up pace. The whole feel of it made Deceit slightly excited - getting on a moving train in the night to who knows where? Quite the little adventure they found themselves in.

Patton climbed up the ladder and jumped into the open cart, helping Deceit who climbed in after him. The two huffed and puffed as they flopped down on a mat, leaning against the other side of the carriage, staring at the passing scenery through the open wall. The moon flickered behind the trees, half covered up by dark clouds, the other desperately trying to keep in view.

"I love trains" Patton mused, leaning his head against the wall behind him tiredly, blinking slowly. "They're my favourite type of transport..." he drifted, turning his head to stare at Deceit who looked over at the boy at the same time, catching and holding his gaze. Patton's eyes trailed down to the burn scar that trailed up his left cheek, all the way to his eye. Patton always wondered how he obtained it, but many people had bullied him for it in the past, so he felt talking about it would open up some wounds.

Nevertheless, Patton didn't realise what he was doing until his hand was gently stroking the skin, making Deceit's vision go hazy for only a moment, throat creating a low rumble of delight. Subconsciously, he tilted his head to be closer to the warmth, the touch-starvation he had dealt with for many, many years shining through, making him shuffle closer and hold onto Patton's wrist, keeping his hand there.

Patton only giggled, using his free hand to trail up and down Deceit's arm, watching and feeling him shiver and hum in contented bliss. This carried on for what felt like hours, Patton gently stroking different parts of his body - be it his arms, cheeks, sides or back, Deceit loved it all - especially when he would play with his hair. He slowly lowered down so his head laid in Patton's lap, complete putty in the cardigan-clods hands. For some reason Patton really liked that.

Grinning, Patton slowly trailed the tips of his fingers down his torso and stomach, watching his body jolt and stretch further towards the hand. "You're so cute" He cooed, Deceit wanted to disagree, but when Patton returned to his sides, instead he clamped his mouth shut and purred, eyes slowly slipping shut, too.

A little longer into the journey Patton found himself leaning against a crater, holding a sleeping Deceit in his lap. He blearily stared at the world outside the train carriage, and soon enough, he had fallen into slumber too. The next morning, the train was stationary. Patton gently shook Deceit awake, and after stretching and sharing soft smiles, they crept off and away from the station, finding themselves in a small, cosy village.

They walked into the nearest pub and explained their situation. The kind lady behind the bar let them have free drinks and snacks as she called the police to come pick them up.

"Thank you" Patton spoke, twirling his straw around his milkshake. Deceit glanced up questioningly, eyes wide and innocent looking. "For not leaving me...I had a fun time, even if we got a little lost" Patton giggled slightly, smiling even more when Deceit chuckled and shrugged, finishing his plate of chips.

"I guess" he rolled his eyes playfully, "I had fun too. Thank you for treating me like a human"

Patton reached over, squeezing his hand gently, gazing at him adoringly with an adorable smile. "Of course! You're wonderful, Deceit, and I...want to hang out with you more!"

Deceit stared at him with sudden caution. "Really? Why?" He replied back, utterly confused.

"I like you! That's why!" Patton spoke, enthused. "You're a great friend, De! And I really like your eyes" he commented as an afterthought, laughing when his cheeks suddenly lit up with a pastel pink.

Not too long later, the police arrived and took them home. In the car, the two teens fell asleep against each other, and when they woke up, they were outside their school. Patton's dads rushed over when their son tiredly stumbled out the car, both men pulling him into a bone crushing hug.

Deceit, on the other hand, was greeted by an irritated woman he knew worked at the orphanage. "Have you any idea how worried we all were?" She demanded icily, definitely not sounding at all worried, or even relieved Deceit was back. "How could I not? It's so obvious by your tone of voice" Deceit mocked, earning a huff and a stern glare.

"You are grounded until I say otherwise. Seriously, can you not stay out of trouble?" She grumbled, turning to her car. Deceit watched her go, deciding against walking with her. He strode over to Patton who had watched the whole thing, smirking at the worry swimming in his eyes.

"Don't knock it till you try it. Being an orphan is wonderful" he nasalised, unexpectedly being pulled into a hug by Patton. "Patton" Deceit sighed, slowing hugging back. "I'm fine" he murmured lowly, giving Patton one reassuring look. Behind them, the lady called for Deceit, so he tipped his imaginary hat, stuffed his hands into his pockets and stalked off towards the car.

Patton watched him go with sad eyes, turning to his dads. One of them turned to the other, and he sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Fine"

A few weeks later Deceit heard someone calling his name. Pausing his drawing, he slid down the banister precariously, spotting an excited looking Patton with his dads who both equally looked happy.  The owner quickly ushered them inside his office - he was much kinder than the worker that drove Deceit home when he and Patton were lost; in fact she's the only bitch that works here, really.

When Deceit found out they were here to adopt him, he had to force his jaw from falling, slowly shaking his head. "No" he firmly spoke, not meeting their gaze. "No, I don't want to be adopted" he suddenly snarled, becoming defensive. "I don't need a family" he added, not sparing a glance at the heartbroken Patton, the cardigan-clod watching him pick himself up and leave in a storm.

"I'll go talk to him-" the owner tried, but Patton's shorter dad stood up too. "No; I will" he smiled, ruffling Patton's hair as he went by. He asked a few kids where Deceit went, and they all told him he usually hides away in the unused attic at the top floor if he was feeling particularly emotional that day. Patton's dad thanked them and climbed up the flights of stairs, slowly cracking open the door leading to the attic.

It was filled with boxes, ranging from large to small, some open, some closed with tape, others on their side, contents fallen to the ground, everything with a layer of grey dust covering it.

Patton's dad found Deceit sitting on an old, ripped, and dusty arm chair facing towards the circle window. "Go away" Deceit muttered dangerously, but instead Patton's dad took a seat on the table next to him, staring at the land he could see through the window.

"Can is tell you a story?" Patton's dad spoke up, turning his head slightly to gaze at Deceit who didn't respond, instead pushed himself further into the seat, eyes set into a hard glare.

"..I had a friend who was an orphan" he decided to go on anyway, "she was in a similar situation as you" he explained, swaying his legs back and fourth, rising the dust underneath on the wooden panelled ground. "She was abandoned by her parents at the age of eleven, and she felt such betrayal she never allowed herself to be adopted again"

"Your point?" Deceit muttered darkly.

"She regrets it. To this day, she regrets not letting herself find another family. She understood not everyone was like her own family, but when she did, it was too late. I'm not saying you might regret it when you're an adult, but everyone deserves a family, and Patton really likes you, even if you've only known each other for a few weeks" Patton's dad went silent for a moment, letting the words sink in. Deceit hated to admit to himself, but when he said Patton liked him, he felt his heart flutter.

"Patton was an orphan, too, only difference is we adopted him when he was a baby. You both lost your parents at a very young age, that doesn't mean you have to be alone. We'll have a few test trails, anyway. If you like it, you can stay, if you don't, you can stay here. It's your decision, De, we'll wait downstairs" Patton's dad sent him a smile, hoping down from the table to head towards the door. He halted, though, when Deceit called out to him.

Standing a few feet behind, he played with the yellow gloves hiding his hands. "You really want to adopt me?" He murmured in a soft voice.

Patton's dad smiled. "We do"

"You won't abandon me?"

"Never. We promise"

Deceit nodded. "..fine" he managed, meeting Patton's dads gaze.

Watching joy spread across Patton's face when the news was broken to him was the best feeling Deceit probably ever felt all his life. Staying in an actual home instead of an orphanage was intimidating, and very out of place for him, but he settled in a few nights later, one night he even found himself crying, wondering how he had gotten so lucky

When he agreed to the adoption, he was living full time in their house a month later. Sitting next to Patton while eating dinner with a family was something Deceit would never get used to - it was so surreal he could barely comprehend it.

And, a few months later, when he and Patton shared a kiss cuddled up on his bed, he realised he did, in fact need someone, and that someone was laying in his arms.
