Soulmate tattoo - Virgil x Roman

7:38pm

Uhhhhhh hey! So I got this idea from @FandomsUnited_Always from their OneShot book

Soulmate au with my own twist? I guess?

Au

Virgil's dark eyes lingered on the words that were permanently embedded into his skin, directly across his forearm, bold letters contrasting starkly against his pale white skin. He read it over a few times before his mind became vacant, now he had stared at the words for over eight minutes, unmoving from the corner of his bed where he sat awaiting to be called downstairs by either of his mothers. He always got a ride to collage, today being no different.

His moms were the only people on this planet that knew what was written into his skin from birth, the first time they saw it they covered it up, sometimes with clothes, other times with foundation, with whatever they could find, really. They weren't ashamed of what the words said, nor were they planning to cover the words from the start - they just felt it was...right.

From birth everyone has a sentence tattooed onto their arm depicting the first words you hear your soulmate utter - most people like to flaunt it around, especially if it was something funny, or cute, or sexual, it was never something to be embarrassed over, as everyone had it.

There is a way to get rid of it, but more of the older generations look down on the people who do, the covering of the tattoo was never something new, but in recent years more and more people want it covered up by something else. Be it people who aren't soulmates but are already in love with each other, or people who don't want to feel love.

There are many reasons, but it's controversial. Virgil thought about it, sometimes he even considers it to this day, he couldn't bare the words that that glared up at him whenever he caught a glimpse, it was a painful reminder of what he would have to go through when he was older.

He could avoid it all he wanted, but you physically can't know when you would hear the words, no matter if you stay inside all day, that one night you go out with your friends, or decide to go for a walk, you will hear it, and it'll change your life.

But Virgil didn't want his life to change into that.

"Virgil, honey! Time to go!"

Great.

He didn't have many friend at school, which was why he only had two friends in collage, but he didn't care, he was happy to hang out with his two best friends Logan and Patton. They've been with him since the beginning, as far back as he could remember, and trusts them with his life, never feeling the need to split apart to find new people. They've had arguments in the past, but their strong bond always over powered it.

It also relaxed Virgil even further with the fact they were soulmates - meaning he didn't have to meet whoever their soulmate would've been.

"Hey, Virge!" Patton grinned at his best friend, splitting from Logan to rush over to him, pulling him into a tight and warm hug. Virgil hid a smile into his shoulder, gently hugging him back for a few moments, splitting apart before it would become embarrassing. They were in the middle of the cafeteria, after all. Luckily, everyone was busy with their own business.

"Salutations, Virgil" Logan greeted, a thicc binder pressed up to his chest, other hand free which he used to hold Patton's hand when they walked down the hallway. Same-sex soulmates were a common occurrence much like opposite-sex soulmates, so homophobia didn't exist in this world. The only reason why these two were different was because they found their soulmate at such a young age. The words that were still engraved into their skin were each other's names.

The first words they learnt as toddlers.

They were the only soulmate couple in the entire collage - the same happened in the school they went to before collage, which gave them the award of "best relationship". Sophie and her boyfriend were furious for weeks. Until they broke up.

"Sup" he responded, sitting opposite the two on the circular plastic seat. They both wore t-shirts due to the warm weather their state was plagued with for most of the year, forearms visible to anyone who wanted to see. Virgil stared at the words that lit up under the light that shone onto them, instead of being a pitch black, they were a pure white.

The colour of the words change when you meet your soulmate, which was why the parents of Logan and Patton new they were soulmates and not just blabbing the name of their friend.

Virgil wanted that. But at the same time he didn't.

Patton dove straight into conversation, taking the lead while his soulmate and close friend responded whenever they had the chance, or felt like their input would carry whatever they were talking about at the time. Patton liked to change the topic a lot.

"Virgil, why don't you come over this afternoon?" Patton suddenly blurted, eyes lighting up when he remembered. Virgil paused, almost choking on his food he took a bit out of at the wrong time. Virgil didn't mind going to his friends home - well, used to - as a little over two months ago another student moved in as it was a student accommodation house, ever since the first awkward encounter, Virgil has never returned.

"Thomas would love to see you again! And we have a new roommate coming today!" Patton chirped, folding one leg under his butt, unable to sit still in his excitement. Virgil chewed his lip, not wanting to say no to his friend. He did want to live with them in the beginning, but his parents lived so close to his collage already, in the end he didn't feel ready to move out yet.

Life came with meeting new people, he just wanted to stray as far as he could away from that aspect. That didn't mean he could avoid it completely. Sighing, he met Patton's gaze, his blue eyes wide and waiting for a response.

"...fine"

Patton unlocked the slightly grubby white door to his shared house, quickly bouncing into the medium sized foyer that split off into the living room, two hallways and a set of stairs leading to the second level. Behind him, Virgil and Logan stepped in, the two setting their shoes on the rack while Virgil nervously fidgeted on the welcome mat, sleeves drawn over his hands.

Once Patton noticed, he moved to stand in front of his friend, tilting his head up to meet his worried gaze. "It'll be alright, Kiddo, you can stay with me!" Reaching out to his hand, Virgil took his with some reluctance, letting his taller and bubbly friend pull him in, closing the door with his hip and a light giggle.

"Remember to breathe" Patton tapped his nose, grinning. Virgil couldn't help but smile back, what could he say? His smile was infectious.

At first, he thought he would flounder throughout the afternoon, but once he finally got into a conversation with the boy he was so scared to talk to, he realised Thomas was just as anxious as he was - it was amusing to both of them, as really in the end they had nothing to worry about.

"It's so hot" Thomas complained lightly with a chuckle, sitting up to tug his jumper from his body and onto the back of the couch. Virgil told himself not to look, but his eyes were already glued to his arm, his heart tightening at the words he saw.

"You look beautiful in the moonlight"

Really? Those were the first words Thomas got to hear from the person he was supposed to spend the rest of his life with? He didn't want to become jealous, but when he remembered what his own said, he couldn't help but clench his jaw and turn the other way, tapping the arm of the chair to calm himself down.

It wasn't Thomas's fault, Virgil didn't even know why he was mad at him, maybe because he knew Thomas's future would be better than his own.

Out of nowhere, bright lights shone through the window that faced the street in front of the house - everyone realising the new roommate had arrived. Patton instantly moved up from the couch and into the foyer with Logan trailing behind him.

"I hope he's nice" Thomas commented, smiling at Virgil who looked closed off. Tilting his head, he took in his tensed muscles and tight lipped expression.

"Hey, what's up?"

"Nothing" Virgil shot back, wincing inwardly when his voice came out sharpened. Thomas backed away a little at the sudden change of tone, nodding his head lightly before swivelling around on the couch seat to be at a better angle with the door.

They both heard inaudible chatter from Patton and presumably the new roommate. He sounded loud. And confident. Virgil slumped, dragging a hand through his hair. Great.

To get out of the awkward atmosphere he made with Thomas, he slipped into the kitchen that connected to the lounge, grabbing himself a glass and filling it with water. Behind him, he didn't expect someone to enter through the second entrance, and he definitely didn't expect to hear the words that fell from the new roommates mouth.

"I am dying!" He exclaimed, wiping a hand across his sweaty forehead, damp hair slicked back. He went to carry on when the boy at the other end of the kitchen sprayed out the water from his mouth, slapping a hand over it afterwards.

The new roommate quirked an eyebrow at the scene, slowly pulling open the fridge while watching the boy hastily grab a towel before wiping down the counter he just drenched in his saliva-mixed water.

"Anyway...I don't know what I was thinking, driving for eight hours in this heat? Disney! I'm surprised I arrived!" Using one hand to pop open a soda can, he leaned on the fridge door, watching the darkly dressed and cute boy grip his wrist tightly.

"Greetings, ah...you must be Patton's friend! He informed me you didn't live here, my names Roman"

Virgil spluttered, he didn't know what to say...

He was standing next to his fucking soulmate and the taller, ochre coloured skin boy didn't even know...well, not yet.

"You're my soulmate"

Roman froze in his position, the soda can nearly slipping from his fingers as his eyes dilated into saucers, watching as the boy's hands shook the more time went by.

Slowly, Roman closed the fridge door and placed the can on the island counter, cocking his head slightly while letting his bright amber eyes rake across the boy's smaller and scrawny body.

No wonder Roman thought he was so...so...perfect the moment he saw him.

Roman's bare arm began to tingle, with one glance he noticed the black words shimmer before highlighting with a bright white, something that would be with him for the rest of his life, something that read "you're my soulmate".

"All this time..." Virgil began, slowly rolling up his sleeve, the once dark words now barely visible to the fair skin he owned, but Roman could see what it said.

"I am dying"

"I...I thought you were dying! I thought I would meet my soulmate only to see them die! Oh my god! Dude, you could've said anything else! Why that?!" He exclaimed, the worries he held over the years shooting out of his body to be replaced with annoyance yet overpowering relief.

Roman wanted to reply seriously, but when he opened his mouth he snorted, so much so it actually hurt his throat. Clasping a hand across his lips, he leaned on the counter to laugh as silently as possible, he didn't want to embarrass his soulmate, but he couldn't help it, it was perfectly hilarious!

Virgil huffed, leaning on the wall behind him, dragging a hand through his hair that fell back to it's original position moments later. Shit...he...he wanted to curse Roman to high hell, he literally could have said anything else! Well, not really, whatever your tattoo reads is now permanently apart of your timeline, but really? I am dying? What cruel gods thought that would be funny?

Admittedly, the more Virgil thought, and the more he heard Roman laugh, he felt himself ease, amusement bubbling inside of him as he let out a few chuckles. Whatever, Roman was fucking attractive, so that made up for it.

Once Roman calmed down, he smiled softly at Virgil who blushed lightly under his gaze.

"Well, I can assure you I'm not dying any time soon" Roman teased, laughing when he got the bird flipped at him in response.

"Whatever, soulmate"

I don't do soulmates often
