"But what if he ends up gay though" Minerva commented, sipping from her wine while gazing at her pregnant sister. Kathi sighed, placing a soft hand on top of her protruding baby bump. "I don't know, Minnie, I don't want to think about that right now..." Minerva sighed and rolled her eyes, leaning forward in her chair to be closer to her sister.
"You'll have to as soon as he's born. He could be straight, but that's one sexuality compared to many others. What are the odds of that nowadays!? You might even have a daughter years later!" Kathi sighed again, trailing her eyes down to the ground. Minerva reacher forward to hold her hand, squeezing it so she would meet her gaze.
"I just want him to know we love him. No matter who he is attracted to. Otherwise he could get hurt and...that's the last thing I want to happen to my nephew"
Kathi nodded, understanding the level of protectiveness Minerva held for her family. "I know, I know, I promise"
Minerva nodded, sipping from her wine again. "Still can't believe you married a homophobic man" Kathi groaned, slumping in her chair. "Roman's sweet-"
"If he kicks your child onto the street for liking men, his sweetness will run down the drain"
Kathi rubbed her stomach, huffing through her nose and closing her eyes. Roman had never been outright homophobic in her presence - it was his parents that made everyone think Roman was a homophobe. He grew up in a very strict household, they weren't exactly Christian, but they sometimes went to church, in fact religion was the last thing they ever wanted to preach about - yet they still thought the idea of gays was disgusting.
Either way, Kathi knew if Roman treats their child like his parents did to him, Minerva would take them away in a heartbeat.
Cut to fifteen years later, that same conversation was still on Kathi's mind. She couldn't remember everything exactly, but she still wondered about her sons sexuality, and what Roman's response to it would be. She couldn't imagine Roman ever hating their son for something he couldn't control - but would Roman understand he couldn't control it? Through the past fifteen years, Roman had acted completely different from his own dad, much to Minerva's (and secretly Kathi's) relief. Instead of acting heartless, and forcing him to ignore his feelings, Roman would quite often tell Virgil giving and receiving affection was normal, and so was crying. Everyone cries, it was a human emotion.
Roman spoilt him, too, from the best toys, to the latest technology - but Virgil never asked for much, all he wanted was good earphones, a decent phone and an Audiobooks account.
Life had been going so wonderfully for the family, until one night, the night everything changed. For Kathi was today years old when she found out Roman's parents didn't know they had a grandson.
"What do you mean they don't know?!" Kathi exclaimed, staring at her husband as if he was crazy. Roman deflated, running a hand through his hair. "You know how they are" he argued back, "I wanted to keep Virgil safe, protected, I hated growing up in a house like that - if they found out the way I was raising him, I'm sure they'd try and get him taken away!"
"You don't know that, Roman"
The man in question snorted incredulously, "are you serious?" He suddenly exploded, making Kathi flinch back. "I lived with those people for eighteen years, I think I would know how they acted!"
Kathi went to respond when she saw a fearful Virgil in the doorway. She softened, staring at Roman warningly. "Roman-"
"They-they...they would be disappointed by him!"
"Roman!"
"What!? He wears nail polish and makeup, dresses in rather emo clothing, sometimes feminine clothing, and lets his dyed hair grow out so he could have bangs"
"Roman, I swear to god-"
"I'm giving him the childhood that I've always wanted, one he can be free in, I'm protecting him from getting hurt!"
"Well you're not doing a very good job!" She suddenly yelled to cut him off, throwing her hand in the direction of their son. Roman turned around, faltering when he saw his son in the doorway, tears welling in his eyes. His heart shattered at the sight, cursing under his breath. "Virgil-"
"N-no" he whispered, shaking his head. "Stay away from me" he whispered, turning around and dashing up the stairs to his room. Roman stood, unmoving before he collapsed onto a chair and held his face in his hands, breathing in ragged breaths. Kathi walked straight by him to get to her son, finding him curled up on his bed, desperately trying to block everything out with his music.
She closed the door and drifted across the room to sit on the bed beside him, noticing as he picked and pulled at the polish on his nails. She held his hands to stop him, the boy slowly lifting his gaze up to stare at her through his lashes. She reached over and took out his earphones, placing them to one side. "Come here, baby" Virgil shuffled into her inviting arms, sniffling and crying into her chest.
"Your Dad didn't mean anything bad about what he said" she murmured, squeezing him tighter. "You won't believe the amount of times he's told me how much he loves shopping with you...he..he just worded what he said in the wrong way" she explained the best way she could, cupping Virgil's face when he leaned back, streaks of tears through his makeup.
"He loves you, Virgil, he just...grew up in a not-so-accepting household. Roman was taught to be such a...a man" she chuckled, smiling when Virgil silently cracked up at her words. "A emotionless man...it surprised me with how delicately he treated you, I thought he would've never said I love you, but gosh that man nearly says it everyday! At this point he might as well be your mother" she laughed, pressing a soft kiss to Virgil's forehead.
"I'm sure he feels really guilty about what he did, and will probably barge in right now with some sort of gift, proclaiming how sorry he was for what he said, so before he breaks down your door, talk to him, for me?" Virgil bit his lip and slowly nodded his head, allowing his mother to wipe of his makeup with wipes before he slowly ventured down the stairs, still feeling a little anxious from their argument before hand.
He found his dad pacing in the kitchen, hair screwed up from how many times he brushed his hand through it. When Virgil stepped into eyesight, Roman paused, fidgeting on the spot before throwing his arms around Virgil in a tight hug.
"Why aren't you wearing makeup?" Roman worried, sitting him down, "was it what I said? And your nails..." he drifted, gently holding up his hand to trace over the picked-at polish. "I'm so sorry, Virgil, I didn't mean what I said in a bad way, I-I was just trying to get my point across, I thought I was in the right, but I suppose I'm not..." he trailed off, "I just wanted you to have the best childhood you could, away from the people that ruined mine" Roman hugged him again, hiding his face in his sons shoulder momentarily.
"Will you ever forgive me?"
"Dad, Jesus, you didn't even do anything bad" Virgil muttered with a shrug and a small smile, "I overreacted, stop being so...mushy" Virgil slowly pushed him away and Roman laughed, wiping his eyes with his sleeve. "Disney, Virge...I don't think I'll ever understand you. I'm too old-...no I'm not, this isn't on me, you're too emo" he quickly corrected, smiling afterwards to show he was joking.
"You're too prissy"
The man gasped, "I am not!" He defended, crossing his arms. Virgil just hummed, "Yeah, totally" he dragged out, smirking when Roman made a weird noise and crossed his arms like pouting child. Virgil watched him for a moment, then began drawing his sleeves over his hands as he contemplated whether or not he should admit what he was about to admit. He had wanted to for awhile, but rather to his mother than his dad, but in that moment it felt...right.
"Hey, dad?" Roman glanced at him briefly, still pouting. "Yes?"
"I uh..." breathe, breathe, breathe.., "I think I'm...gay"
A sudden tense atmosphere fell across the room. Roman dropped his arms, turning to stare at his son with a blank expression. Virgil started to panic, feeling like he judged the moment completely wrong, and his dad was now suddenly going to hate him. He couldn't tell, Roman was just frozen, like a statue, or a robot awaiting commands. Regret. Deep regret. Regret that boiled in his stomach as he felt his breathing begin to labour. Could he pull this off as a joke at this point!?
When all felt lost, a sudden smile widened across Roman's lips, so wide it looked painful. He then let out a weird yell of excitement, picking Virgil up to twirl him around. "You're gay!" He exclaimed with a joyous laugh, putting him down to stare at his face closely. "You're gay..." he drifted, Virgil finding his response a little...weird, but definitely better than anger.
"Kathi!" Roman suddenly screeched, dashing out the room to find his wife sitting in the living room. "Our son is gay! I have a gay son!" He felt like he could cry from happiness, while Kathi stared at her husband, perplexed. Virgil watched from the doorway, eyebrow risen, staring at his dad questioningly. Kathi was...surprised, but hey, at least he's accepting.
In the end, Roman finally calmed down, but not before hugging Virgil a few times, reminding him how proud he was, and how much he still loved him. Virgil didn't want to admit that was probably the best evening of his life - especially with the fact both of his parents accepted who he was, and they wouldn't stop complimenting him on it.
"Hey and I uh...I actually...might have a...boyfriend" Virgil managed, now sitting in his pyjamas on the couch between his parents. Again, Roman gasped, "I don't think so!"
"Wha-?"
"He's not your boyfriend until I approve!"
"Ah, jeez, dad you'll scare him off-"
"Good!"
"Roman" Kathi chuckled, one arm around her son. "Virgil's old enough to find good, trustworthy people"
"But Kathi" he whined, "I know what it's like to be a teenage male!" He flopped back onto the couch, "especially when I had sex with a few..." he drifted, not even realising what he had said.
"You what!?" Both Virgil and Kathi exclaimed at the same time. Roman laughed, still staring at the ceiling. "You think this" he gestured to himself grandly, "is straight? We've been married for sixteen years!" He proclaimed, "I'm perfectly bi in every way, gosh, I can't wait to tell my parents" he was suddenly giddy at the idea.
"..what have I done" Virgil murmured to Kathi who also stared at Roman like he had gone insane.
"I don't know, baby, I don't know..."
