A child - Patton & Lilith

"There's a horror movie called Alien? That's really offensive; no wonder everyone keeps invading you" — The Doctor

Au

Patton hummed a delightful tune while plucking blackberries from the tall bush that loomed over him. The sun was high above him in the air, creating a nice amount of heat that battled the cold winds. Being out in nature was a favourite pass time of his, and now it was the perfect time of year to go berry-picking, he couldn't think of anything better to do! Especially as he gets to make pie from this, and his friends absolutely adore his pies, and as he loves making them happy, he has no quarrels in hunting around the beaten out path beside the lake, filling up his red shiny bucket full of the juicy fruit.

Plopping a cheeky berry into his mouth, he turned on his heel and carried on down the path, smiling at a few birds that zoomed overheard, or the rare squirrel scuttling up the tree. The sound of the flowing water soothed him, making him feel like it was only him and nature, no one else existed, just him, his berries, and the animals hidden in their homes.

He decided to rest for a bit, sitting on an abandoned bench that must've been made years ago, yet it was still here, standing on it's last legs. Kicking his legs back and forth, he couldn't help but eat a few of the berries alongside his sandwiches and cookies he brought along in his bag.

While he became lost in the content sounds of nature, his ears picked up another sound, something he wasn't expecting to hear;

A baby's cry.

At first, he assumed they belonged to a family who were hiking through the forest like he was, but when it seemed five minutes had passed and the baby hadn't stopped, he started to become worried. Packing away his things, he picked up the red bucket and used the stones to hop over the river, climbing up the bank on the opposite side to the bench and scurrying along through the leaves and shrubbery to where he could hear the cries coming from.

Not long later, he found himself at the edge of the forest that looked out to a yellow field. This was the opposite end to where he usually travels, as this field was owned by the farmer living in the house in the far distance. He wasn't trespassing, but he wasn't about to push it and actually go onto the field - instead, he walked along the edge, peering around a tree to spot a baby, laying in a basket that swung gently in the wind from a low-hanging branch.

He let out a gasp, placing the bucket on the ground before hurrying over to the baby, picking up the note that was tucked to their side.

Please look after my Lilith, I can't
cope anymore, she's too much,
she won't stop crying, I feel
like I'm going insane. Please,
please don't let my baby girl
die.

Patton blinked, gazing at the baby who had stopped crying, instead they were staring at him with wide, innocent sparkling green eyes. He smiled softly, yet felt a pang of sorrow for the girl, why had the mother left her here of all places? The chances of someone finding her up here were slim, especially if they even wanted to come up all the way. Gently, he folded the note and returned it to it's original position, leaning forward to stroke the girls cheek - the girl he assumed to be call Lilith.

"Hey" Patton said softly, giggling when Lilith clasped her small hand around his thumb, lips parted as she gazed up at his face. How could anyone abandon such a beautiful baby? He pulled his phone and snapped a picture, sending it to his friend/crush, Logan.

Moments later, he responded with a text.

Logan 💙 - I thought you were picking blackberries? Why do you have a baby?

Patton - I was!! But I heard her crying! I came across her on the edge of the forest! What do I do??

Logan 💙 - That is quite concerning, I see there is a note. What did it say?

Patton - The mother couldn't cope they said don't let Lilith starve

Logan 💙 - Hm, I have heard of occurrences like this, but not here. I would advise you take 'Lilith' home and care for her, while also calling emergency services. The hospital might be able to track down the mother.

Patton - okay!! Thank you Logy!! X

Logan 💙 - You are welcome. X

Patton felt his heart buzz at the simple 'kiss' at the end of his text. Patton wished he could tell him about his feelings, but he didn't want to ruin the friendship they had. Sighing woefully, he pocketed his phone, scooped up his bucket, and gently took the basket down from the branch, shuffling so the handle was resting in the dent of his arm before he carefully made his way back to the path. Once there, he headed back to his car with a skip in his step and another gentle song vibrating his vocal cords.

He didn't realise, but his singing calmed the baby so much so she slowly fell asleep.

Patton made it back to the car park, with one quick graze, he realised his car was still the only one here. He tried to recall seeing one when he arrived an hour ago, but he couldn't seem to remember, so he guessed Lilith was left by someone who arrived and vanished before he showed up. With a sigh, he paced the bucket on the floor of the car, strapping the basket to the chair by wrapping the seatbelt around it.

He made sure to drive carefully all the way home, whenever he had to stop, he would reach over and tuck the blanket closer to her body, sometimes even pressing gentle kisses to her face. While in town, his eyes traveled across a store which made him think; Lilith must be hungry! Could she wait until they arrived home? He doesn't know how long she was out there...she could be really hungry.

After some deliberation, he parked his car and quickly clambered out. As it was a warm day, he took her inside with him, thankful it wasn't too busy, incase the loud chatter of voices might wake Lilith up. While gazing through the baby section, he turned his head when someone gasped beside him, spotting two woman fawning over the baby that was stirring in the basket, shuffling around against the blanket.

"She is adorable" one woman cooed, grinning up at Patton who smiled bashfully, trying to tell them she wasn't his, but their compliments cut him off each time until he gave up and thanked them instead. Now that he thought about it, she was rather adorable, especially her big glowing eyes that stared at everything in wonder. Patton pulled the basket up higher to stroke her plump cheek, smiling as she let out a string of giggles.

Picking up a baby bottle and some milk, he bought them and hurried to his car. In his seat, he rested the basket on his lap, tucking a hand under her head while lowering the sucker to her lips, watching in delight as she gently began to suck the milk from the bottle into her mouth, eyes slipping shut as she drank. Patton felt his heart swell, taking another picture to show Logan who once again responded relatively quickly.

Logan 💙 - You have not arrived home yet?

Patton - I wanted to feed her!! I didn't know if she would be hungry or not

Logan 💙 - I suppose that is quite logical, I can come over if you need any help.

Patton beamed, quickly writing out a response with one hand.

Patton - Yes!!!!! Please!!!!!!

Logan 💙 - Okay, I will be over in five minutes.

Patton took away the bottle when she had had enough, returning the basket to the passenger seat before rolling the car onto the main road, once again taking it slow and steady while also bouncing in his seat in excitement at the prospect of seeing Logan so soon after they met up prior.

It only took him three minutes to get home from the store, so with care he brought the baby inside and set the basket on the counter, startled when she suddenly began to cry, kick and scream. He tried giving her the bottle incase she was hungry, but she pushed her head to the side to avoid it, her continuous screams only getting worse.

He licked his lips, not entirely knowing what to do. He knew the basics of caring for a baby, but only from knowledge Roman and Virgil had given him, and obviously it wouldn't be much seeing as he didn't have a child then. Following his instincts, he carefully scooped her from the basket and gently rested her over his shoulder, patting her back while bobbing up and down.

A few moments later she began to burp, and Patton giggled, relaxing when her cries softened, but she still hadn't silenced, so holding the baby closer, he began to sing a gentle tune, his moving jaw efficiency stroking her cheek that was damp with tears. So caught up in singing Lilith to silence, he didn't hear the front door open, or Logan enter the kitchen behind him, his eyes widening when he saw Patton swaying back and forth, singing so softly Logan felt his heart melt.

He knew Patton was quite self conscious of his voice, but the tie-loving man never understood why, for it was beautiful.

"Oh!" His singing stopped when his eyes homed in on Logan, sending the man a smile. "Hey, Lo" he made sure to stay quiet for Lilith who was now laying in his arms, staring at him with hooded eyelids. "Salutations" Logan responded, following his move with the quiet voice, nearing the cardigan-clod to get a better look at Lilith.

"Babies are such a wonderful thing" Logan commented after a beat of silence, rounding to the empty basket to read the note, frowning when it didn't really give much information to Lilith's parents. "They are" Patton responded in a whisper, sitting himself down on the counter, eyes never leaving Lilith who once again fell asleep, cuddled up to his chest.

Logan couldn't look away, the scene was almost too adorable to comprehend. He wanted to save this image in his mind forever, but he knew the best thing to do would be to call nine-one-one, so that was what he did, talking in the hallway to the operator who said they'd send someone over.

Patton was sad to give Lilith away, but he had no knowledge with babies, so he was sure they would care for her much better than he could. Still, while sitting with Logan in the living room, he felt his heart weigh down sorrowfully, not meaning to grow attached to Lilith so soon.

A month went by, not a day did Patton go without thinking of Lilith, wondering if she was okay, if her parents returned, or if she had better parents who were giving her everything she needed. His friends noticed his sadness, and were floored at the prospect that Patton couldn't even bring himself to smile when they call came over and tried to cheer him up. He was such a bubbly man - they quickly realised that baby meant more than originally assumed.

Exactly one month and fifteen days later, Patton found himself cleaning the house while humming simple tunes that floated from the speakers. He didn't expect visitors, so was surprised when he heard a knocking at his door. Sighing, he forced a smile on his lips and hurried over, opening the door to reveal Logan, Virgil and Roman, plus their son, Hercules. Patton still wondered to this day his Roman was able to convince Virgil to name their child 'Hercules' but either way, he and the name was adorable.

"Hey, guys!" Patton chirped, but it was obvious he wasn't his happy, usual self. Hercules was sitting in Roman's arms, sucking hug thumb gently. Patton leaned over to ruffle the short hair that had started to grow on his head, finding him to be extra adorable.

"Greetings, Padre" Roman spoke up, pulling Patton into a short, sweet embrace. "Our Dear nerd has a surprise for you" he winked, rushing into the house with Hercules. Knitting his eyebrows together in confusion, he stared between Logan and Virgil, only earning a shrug and a smirk from the latter before he was hauling himself inside to his son and husband.

"I have noticed how forlorn you seem recently, and I came to the conclusion it was Lilith - so, with some help from Virgil and Roman - mainly Virgil - we were able to find her" as he finished, he drew whatever he was holding behind his back in front of him, showing off the car seat Lilith was strapped into. Upon spotting Patton, she giggled and reached out for him, Patton unable to move for a few moments tears welling in his eyes as he unclipped her from the chair and held her in his arms, heart filling with her giggles and happy cries.

"Thank you, Logan" Patton sobbed, using one arm to pull him into a hug, Lilith comfortably lodged in between. The stoic man tensed, awkwardly hugging him back.

"You are welcome, Patton" he responded, finding himself smiling at Patton who slowly leaned back, feeling a surge of confidence to press a kiss to his cheek. Logan blushed, still smiling, rubbing his red cheek gently. "You missed" he murmured after a few moments of silence, to which Patton blushed further, letting his body subconsciously lean closer again to gently kiss his soft lips.

"Thank you, again" Patton whispered, turning to Lilith who was still giggling quietly, clutching a toy tightly in her left hand. Patton cooed, brushing his nose against hers, laughing along with her while Logan watched on, his heart so full of adoration he felt like it would explode.

In the end, Lilith grew up happily with her two dads.

Bonus because I just thought about it:

"Just tell them, Hermione!" Fifteen year old Lilith exclaimed quietly, gesturing to the room that held hers and Hermione's parents. The girl ran a shaky hand through her short hair, staring at her (secret) girlfriend warily. She hadn't always had the name Hermione - her parents had originally called her Hercules - don't get her wrong, she loved the name, but with being a girl now, she felt more comfortable with this name.

Hermione shook her head, heart beating so rapidly she was worried her rib cage would break. The anxiety that swamped her stomach prevented her from being able to walk into the room, ask her parents if she could speak to them privately, and just tell them she was transgender. Lilith has been with her since day one, she being the only one who knew of Hermione's secret - she thought Lilith wouldn't want to be with her anymore, but when she realised Lilith would love her no matter what, she found herself crying in Lilith's arms, hugging her so tightly, afraid she would disappear.

"Trust me, they'll still love you, and accept you" Lilith pressed a gentle kiss to her trembling lips. "You've got this" Lilith encouraged, and with one gentle push, Hermione was standing in the doorway of the room, gazing at her parents who were cuddled up on the couch, laughing heartily with the joke Patton just made. Lilith entered beside her, plopping down between her parents.

"Ro, Virge? Herm-...." she cleared her thought, "Hercules wants to talk to you"

The two adults looked over at their child who looked like they would faint. Worriedly, they took them out the room and into the kitchen, sitting them down on the counter. "Are you okay, sweetheart?" Roman crooned, stroking her cheek. Hermione nodded, biting her lip harshly while trying to find the right words to say - Lilith was right, she knew that, Roman and Virgil loved her too much to be transphobic against her, but she was just worried, she knows what some people go through with parents who are unaccepting - she didn't know if she would survive with hate from her parents.

"I um..." Hermione's voice wavered, she had to swallow hard before continuing. "I-I-I think-I-I'm um-...I don't-...I might be-I think I am-I want to be...a..." she felt like the world had stopped around her, clenching her eyes shut, she gripped the hands that had picked up hers. "I want to be a girl" she managed, voice barely above a whisper, eyes still screwed shut, she didn't want to see their reactions.

In a moment, she was in the arms of her dad, Roman, who cradled her close while whispering words to help sooth her. In that instant, she broke down a fit of sobs, clinging onto her dad who lowered down onto the ground, Virgil kneeling beside them to join in on the group hug, lovingly rubbing his daughters back as she sobbed and cried, shaking and trembling in their arms.

"Breathe, beautiful, just breathe..." Virgil whispered into her ear, shuffling closer in means to comfort her. Not too soon, Hermione found herself calming down, until her sobs decreased into hiccups, and her tears had came to a stop. Leaning back, she stared at the ground, wiping her nose with her sleeve, waiting tensely for what they might say.

"I couldn't be more proud of you, sweetheart" Roman murmured gently, brushing her hair back. She looked up at Roman shakily, "r-really?" He nodded, beaming. This made her chuckle, for now she almost felt silly she was so worried before. "Do you...want us to call you by a different name?" Virgil brought up, still holding one of her hands tightly in his own. She smiled, nodding lightly.

"Uh...Hermione.." she flushed, biting her lip.

Roman hummed, grinning. "It's perfect!" He exclaimed, hugging her tightly once again. This made her laugh in delight and relief, watching as Roman leaned back and turned to face Virgil who leaned back in anticipation to what he was about to say.

"Do you know what this means?"

"Oh god-"

"We can dress her up in beautiful gowns! And WE CAN TEACH HER HOW TO USE MAKEUP! HERMIONE THIS IS PERFECT!" Roman screeched, picking her up and twirling her around. Hermione burst into laughter, gripping her dad who seemed more excited than she originally intended.

"And" he brightened up, "we can have another child and name them Hercules instead! I need a child named Hercules!" He cried, quickly whispering to Hermione that it wasn't her fault and he would support her with every decision she will make in her life.

"Christ, Roman, no-" the darkly dressed man groaned, letting Roman haul him up from the ground. "Roman yes!" He yelled back, all bubbly and excited. "I've always wanted a little brother..." Hermione just had to add, which made Roman squeal, and Virgil unable to say no.

A few months later, they were back at Patton, Logan and Lilith's house, holding up a baby boy in a pram.

"Say hello to your uncles, Hercules point two!"

"Roman, oh my god-"
